Love the Pinterest idea, I’ll likely start using it when I am a player again. As a player, I tend to either look for online art that comes close to the character(so much easier nowadays than it was 10, 20 years ago) or look at painted minis online or at cons for inspiration. I have done original designs 4 or 5 times over the years (even commissioned artwork for 2 of them) but that’s the exception. As a DM, there is a lot more work required. For my home brewed campaign I have to set up a lot of encounters, and locales, and descriptions (just go to an airport in a major city, look around, see all the different things people are wearing, then imagine having to possibly describe that many different individual NPCs..... note cards are my friends, as are all the images I’ve copied online over the years to inspire or use to make up a description). Even for published modules, many times individual descriptions are missing or incomplete, so you’ll need to supplement them.
