POLL: How do you feel about CDs?

Hey all! As I'm working on my plans for releasing this mermaid EP, I'm reflecting on the handful of times that folks have asked for me to produce my music as CDs. So I thought I'd just ask: Would you have any interest in a physical CD of my mermaid EP?

This would most likely be a special offer reward, so it would be something like "Pledge $35 in the month of [X] and receive a CD along with the normal $35 rewards." (I haven't worked out the details yet, it may not necessarily be in the $35 tier.)

I will of course also be offering the EP in digital form!

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments as well!! I personally only listen to music digitally now, but I know not everyone is like that and I'd love to get a gauge on how useful a CD would be.

What Jerry Barker said.

KPDubbs71

I like CD's as mentioned before they feel more real and are a great backup. I use cd's to back up my music.

Jerry Barker

I'm all about less plastic, product, but I can also see why the nostalgia of a cd can be kind of exciting!

Sadie Rogers

Being technically Gen-X I have an irresponsible CD collection. One of yours would be awesome.

Julie LaVoice

I barely have a way to use CDs anymore.

Ardent Slacker

CDs are great as collectables AND as a backup. I've lost digital-only music several times when switching platforms. I don't personally listen to CDs directly, but the vast majority of my music even today is purchased in CD form.

Nathan Lee

It’s a fun idea, Charles, but I admit I don’t see the point of distributing a flash drive with mp3s on it when I already distribute mp3s for download through Patreon!

Ginny Di

I appreciate having physical CD in case of computer crash with MP3s and also liner notes.

GameyGil

(BTW, if the CDs will be at a certain Patreon level, will you still offer it in your store for sale to non-Patreon/lower-level Patreons?)

David Greenlaw

I have a bookshelf music system - on top of an actual half-height bookshelf - that can play both CDs and tapes (remember those?) right next to my computer. I love the fact that I can play my fave music without tying up computer resources.

David Greenlaw

Another option would be a collectible signed USB drive. I don't know where/who produces them (the drives but probably a bulk incentives/marketing place?) but some musicians I follow also release either limited signed USBs and/or cumulative USBs (signed and unsigned) containing their catalog to date. Price points swing wildly for that but they're usually a lot less expensive than a limited vinyl release.

Charles Kersey

I'm pro CDs as they feel more 'real' to me (and less likely to disappear when a harddrive dies), but due to overseas shipping would probably just stick with digital in this case :/

Great question! You can increase your annual membership to a new tier for a whole year, but you can't just pop up to a higher tier and then decrease it again, unfortunately: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/360042152671-I-paid-a-creator-for-a-year-what-can-I-expect-#h_01F2779HXQ2BK53QDS4WJS89SW But I don't want to punish people for having annual memberships, so I would probably come up with some sort of workaround for that!!

Ginny Di

I listen to CDs in my car haha. A bit old school. But how would the pledging for a month work if I’ve done an annual pledge already? 😅

Sky Onimus

Gosh, I really wish I could!! But I did some perfunctory research and I just don't see myself getting enough pledges to allow me to do even a small pressing of 100 records without losing quite a bit of money :'(

Ginny Di

Ah...Then yes. 😉

Rick Henderson

This is in regards to my mermaid EP, which will be 6 songs :)

Ginny Di

Would love a CD with a collection of songs, but not for just one song. 🤔

Rick Henderson

Oh man, but add me to your list of "people who would buy an actual record," if you magically find a cost effective way to produce them on demand.

Jason Megatron Burrows

I want a CD for both collectible status and for my 20 year old car.

Jason Megatron Burrows

I'm weird and I still use CDs. 😅

Jeanetta Szerletich

I recently built my primary home computer and it never even dawned on me to put a CD ROM in it.

Lilly

Unfortunately I think the number of people who can play a record is even smaller than the number of people who can play a CD — if I were specifically a musician with fans who follow me primarily for music, I could see it being a good move, but since music is just part of my offering, I can't imagine selling enough of them to justify the cost of manufacturing.

Ginny Di

It will not, as I discovered a couple months ago when I bought a CD for the first time in a long while.

NM

I love the idea of CDs (and miss getting a little tangible bundle of artwork and lyrics) but don’t own anything to play them. Would jump at the idea of vinyl but I completely get that it’s so unrealistic to produce 😅

Victoria

I'm the same! If someone handed me a CD, I don't think I could play it. Even my computer doesn't have a disc drive anymore.

Ginny Di

Still try to collect physical media primarily, so a CD would be amazing!

Chris Codina

If you are looking at collectible physical media, you might want to look at records. There have been a resurgence in their popularity, and they have a sound quality to them that digital struggles to match until you go LOSSless.

John W. Oliver

I don't think I even have anything that will play a CD any more. Well... I think my PS5 might, but I've never tried.

Lilly

I’ve been genuinely watching your posts hoping to see an announcement of a CD release’. So yep, definitely interested :)

Jimmy Clephane

I’m a digital music only listener, but I can’t deny the appeal of having a limited edition CD!!
