Patron Choir: Daughter of the Sea

EDIT: After yesterday's practice stream, we have decided to use the soundtrack version for timings! Please make sure you are playing this version, NOT the animated YouTube video, in your headphones while recording.

My album “Songs to Drown Sailors To” is out. To celebrate, let’s make some music together!
Last winter, my Patrons and I collaborated to create a holiday choir! We're doing another community choir project: Anyone who wants to participate can record themselves singing (or playing an instrument!) and we'll combine them all into one song! Earlier this summer, we took a vote and decided on “Daughter of the Sea” from World of Warcraft as sung by the fantastic Laura Bailey.
All are welcome to participate, regardless of singing experience!
How it Works
Recordings should be submitted via Google drive by Sept 30. Those files will then be mixed into a final piece!
How to join in: Singing
- Learn the song! Lyrics can be found here. Or if you're a sheet music kind of person, it's available on MuseScore.
- Record yourself performing the song.
- To keep things simple, we’re breaking it down into two parts — Laura Bailey’s part ("lead"), and the group parts ("backup").
- You can record yourself singing either or both as you feel comfortable!
- In order to keep time, listen to the song (the soundtrack version, please!) through earphones while recording.
- Submit your recording (as .mp3 or .wav) to the “Vocals” folder within the Google Drive Folder. Name your file with whatever name you want to be credited as, so we know whose dulcet tones it contains! E.g., ginnydi.mp3
How to join in: Instrument
A few patrons expressed interest in providing musical accompaniment. If you’d like to do so, please let Sarah (MiskatonicEmber on Discord or GinnyDiSanta@gmail.com) know what instrument(s) to expect!
- Record yourself performing the song. (Listen to the original in earphones to keep time.)
- Upload your .mp3 or .wav file to the “Instrumentals” folder. Name your file with whatever name you want to be credited as, so we know whose musical greatness it contains! E.g., ginnydi.mp3
How to submit files
- Fill in your information on the spreadsheet!
- The name of the file
- The name you wish to be credited as
- Which part you sang
- Your email address (the one you use for Patreon!)
- If you have concerns about putting this information on a spreadsheet available to all Patrons, you can email it to GinnyDiSanta@gmail.com
How to Record
If you already have a method you’re comfortable with for creating .mp3 or .wav files, that’s great! If not, a phone recording is perfectly fine.
You’re also welcome to record on your computer using a program such as Audacity or Garage Band.
Tips for a Good Recording:
- Play the music in your headphones while you sing to help you stay on tempo and pitch.
- Record in an appropriate space. You want to avoid large spaces as they tend to echo. Closets full of clothes (or blanket forts!) are good choices.
- Don’t sing too close to your mic. Keep about a foot or so away to prevent clipping/peaking.
FAQ
- I’m not a great singer, can I still participate?
- Absolutely! This is for fun, and we have a professional mixing & mastering it, so I promise you can’t ruin it! If you’d enjoy participating, you should.
- Where will the finished song be posted?
- The finished song will be shared with all Patrons (and I’ll probably share it on Twitter, too, so I can brag about this amazing community!) but will not be sold or released on streaming platforms. It’s just for fun!
- Can you help us learn the song?
- YES! I’ll be doing a livestream on Monday, Sept 13 at 3pm MT where we can talk about voice parts, sing through all the tracks, talk recording tips, and answer questions!
- Can I harmonize?
- Absolutely! You are welcome to come up with your own harmonies for whichever part(s) you sing.
If you have more questions, feel free to reach out to Sarah Burton at GinnyDiSanta@gmail.com or on Discord as MiskatonicEmber! She’ll be coordinating everything.
