Fixing my boring D&D combat

I've been feeling like my D&D combat is kinda boring, so... I did a ton of research, and put it all together into this video! (I also experimented with some new title cards and styles, which I really like!!)

Who said they were jokes? 🤣

Shawn Rudolph

wait, you're not already worried?? 😅

Ginny Di

How many times can Ginny make jokes about murder in her videos until we need to worry 😂

I always remember a battle that we won by multiple lucky rolls of the dice. We timed the attach from 2 doors at the same time. The room was a death trap, multiple mind flayers. The teams at both doors got surprise and the mega first round damage, ie. fire balls, breath weapons, etc, with great damage rolls dropped most of the threat. After that is was just a mopping up exercise. It was an almost certain death to a lucky survival. The DM was obviously disappointed, but we still talk about that encounter after many years.

She is crazy dedicated to her fans for sure. I am a huge fan and LOVE her content but always concerned she is burning herself out. This is an awesome person to support and she always delivers (even when she thinks she isn't). It is awesome of you to show her your appreciation and awareness of how much she sacrifices for our entertainment and valuable resources.

The best combat I've ever experienced in D&D was playing an NPC's prequel story. I had used an NPC that helped the party in one of my games several times. He didn't travel with the group but he was a useful contact who had helped the players achieve their goals on particularly impossible odds. He was so mysterious and interesting that one of the players agreed to run him in a prequel campaign that told the story of how he transformed from an evil character to a good character. He was the son of a notorious pirate and was living the life of trying to win over his father's approval (always unsuccessfully). He was in a battle on a ship against a superior force. He lost the battle and was captured by the female captain who wanted revenge against the character's father for killing her family. The combat was the most fun I've ever had because my character was exceptionally skilled at acrobatics and had skills with walking on narrow surfaces so I had him fighting the bulk of the fight swinging from sail to sail, forcing the enemy crew to fight me on the yard high above the deck. The combat lasted longer than the DM intended but we both had so much fun dealing with the rules and skill checks to keep balance on those dangerous places. It was especially fun because I got to use the character's advantages and his over all character design to it's fullest potential. My character lost the fight, as was intended by the DM, but it didn't matter because I put up a great fight in spite of the odds and earned begrudging respect from his enemies. (the roll playing that ensued after his capture was especially fun as it gave so much character development when being "interrogated" by his captor.) When trying to do death defying actions that fail often deters characters from wanting to take chances like that. The way rules are set up really makes for a boring combat situation because over time the chances of skill check failure increase dramatically and could prove fatal. We designed it so that it wouldn't fail nearly as much or could be automatic success and we could focus more on using tactics and dramatic combat for a more exciting game session. It's also rare to be in combat situations like this so game balance remains. Skill dice checks can be a problem because if you have a chance to fail 50% of the time doesn't really incentivize characters to take dramatic chances that can add flair to the combat.

Oooo. I could use this, thank you.

I struggle valiantly onward, perpetually late on everything and kicking myself over it 😬
