Equipment List
Added 2023-01-18 23:39:10 +0000 UTCIf you plan on getting into making flavours and soda, good equipment will help. Using coffee filters will just cause frustration and low yields. The percolator (dropping funnel) is the way to go. A stirring plate and a separatory funnel can help get better extraction of your essential oils when making essences. These items do make your life simple and your product better, plus anything is more fun when you have the right equipment.
hBarSci
I do not have any relationship with hBarSci, they just happen to be the only convenient supplier of open-top dropping funnels (percolators), and their customer service is pretty good. They also sell to individuals, unlike most scientific supply companies.
If you are outside of North America, you can contact the glassware manufacturer, Eisco, directly, and they can point you to a local reseller. They sell lab glassware in 110 countries, so chances are they'll be able to get what you need.
You can order some of this equipment on Amazon or other marketplace sites, but often if the price is really low, the quality will be suspect. When it comes to lab glassware, you get what you pay for, and if treated well, it can last decades.
Note: Prices are at the time of this post (Jan 2023) and are subject to change at the whims of the supplier.
Retort Stand
A good lab stand with a large base will keep things stable. The retort stand that holds glassware should have a large base, 8"x5" is as small as I would go.
Rectangular Retort Base & Rod Set
3.75 lbs - Base: 8"x5" SKU STDRD1
Clamp
This clamp will hold the 500 mL dropping funnel as well as the smaller ones. If you need the 1000 mL dropping funnel, contact hBarSci to get the proper clamp.
3 Finger Extension Clamp on Swivel Bosshead
3.4" Max Opening SKU PRCMP01BH
Dropping Funnels (Eisco Labs)
In the soda fountain world, these were known as percolators and they are a game changer when it comes to making extracts. The size will depend on how much extract you are making, but if you plan on making 100 ml of extract, buy a 250 ml dropping funnel, and if you want to make 250 ml of extract, get the 500 ml funnel. I've found the 250 mL funnel to be the best size.

Separatory Funnel
If you want to remove insoluble material from an essence, like terpenes, a separatory funnel is a good investment, though if you are on a budget, you can use a dropping funnel to do the job, a dropping funnel and separatory funnel are effectively the same with a couple of exceptions.
The benefits of a separatory funnel are that they come with a closure/cap, which allows you to shake the content, improving extraction and they have a tapered body which improves identification of the two layers as they approach the stopcock. But you can do this in a bottle as well and then when you want to separate the mixture, pour it into the dropping funnel and let it form two layers.
If you buy a tapered separatory funnel, you will need a closed ring clamp, like the example below. Still, it is best to contact the supplier can get the diameter of the separatory funnel and ask them to size the appropriate ring clamp. Too small, and the funnel will tip and too large it will just fall through.
Magnetic Stir Plate
Available for around $30US ($50CDN) on Amazon. I have one from LABFISH but they are all probably made in the same factory in China, so don't worry about the name or details, just know that they are simple devices. Pick up a pack of magnetic stir bars because they are easy to lose, and most stir plates only come with one stir bar.
Beakers
You don't need beakers, but they make measuring and pouring much easier. If you are on a budget, kitchen measuring cups will do the job.
Filtration
These are handy for removing particulate (magnesium carbonate) from essences or "polishing" an extract. The equipment below is my exact setup, but other options exist, just make sure that your filter paper is the correct size for your filter funnel and if you see 24/40, that is the neck size on the flask and the funnel and it ensures they work together.
Buchner Filtering Funnel 250ml, 76mm 24/40
Erlenmeyer Flask, Borosilicate Glass, 24/40, 500 ml
pH Meter
Milwaukee MW102-FOOD PRO+ 2-in-1 pH and Temperature Meter for Food
Extra Stuff
Though not necessary, disposable pipettes are handy and cheap. They keep things clean, make sampling much easier, and help avoid cross-contamination.

2023-10-09 22:43:38 +0000 UTCI'm sure the propylene one would be fine, I've never worked with one before, but modern plastics are quite durable and should handle a vacuum fine. I like glass personally, it scratches less and can be easier to clean. Some essential oils can also etch or eat away at plastic.

2023-09-30 17:57:38 +0000 UTCHello. I’m looking at the vacuum filtration kit on hbarsci. Is the polypropylene Büchner funnel okay for filtering or does it need to be glass?

2023-09-30 01:36:41 +0000 UTCI use a Milwaukee MW102-FOOD PRO+ 2-in-1 pH and Temperature Meter for Food https://artofdr.ink/phmeter and they cost about $150 but I've found them reliable.

2023-09-23 14:56:01 +0000 UTCI use a 20 micron filter as the filter paper pores will get plugged relatively quickly, increasing the efficiency of the filter. I then run the partially filled liquid back through the filter again and it comes out pretty clear and is faster than using a 5 micron filter.

2023-09-07 21:03:29 +0000 UTCNew subscriber. Thanks for all the great info. I just installed an old soda fountain draft arm in a bar/lounge that is otherwise focused on beer... For the filtering setup, should we be going for <5microns? looks like you chose a medium grit filter funnel and 25 micron filter paper... also, if I have a separatory funnel will I ever use the dropping funnel? Any thoughts on using an electric vacuum pump for filtering?

2023-09-07 15:54:12 +0000 UTCI'll do a more formal video or write-up on that, but here is the quick version. Use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) 99% found at the pharmacy. It is cheap and a great, safe solvent to clean up oil in the frit of the filter funnel. If some magnesium carbonate plugs the frit, soak in a 5% solution of citric acid and water (25 g citric acid in 500 ml water) overnight, then rinse with water and then the IPA. This will solve about 90% of any problems you come across.

2023-06-14 13:02:06 +0000 UTCI was wondering if you could quickly run down what you use to clean your equipment, specifically getting residual flavor/aroma out of the frit in the Buchner funnel? I'm new to this, and all my web searching point towards acetone, or sulphuric acid/hydrogen peroxide, etc... Basically pretty caustic, and I'm wondering if you happen to have a preferred method?

2023-06-13 16:16:00 +0000 UTCWhen you order caffeine, you have to tell them you are a "drink formulator," and it is for business purposes. The new US laws on caffeine are bit ridiculous but caffeine is still legal and used in thousands of products. If they ask for your business id just say you are self-employed and are developing a soda formulation. Beyond that, they shouldn't deny you, unless they don't know what they are doing.

2023-06-12 17:25:39 +0000 UTCNew guy here, thanks so much for giving all this information and the video. Top-notch. I download the spreadsheet and started ordering all the stuff for the energy drink. The only issue I ran into was ordering the caffeine. I don't own a business so they won't sell to me, and it seems here in the States finding caffeine is almost impossible. Any suggestions? Edit** Sorry, I should have mentioned it's the Fusion Flavours site that rejected me for the caffeine.

2023-05-31 09:42:38 +0000 UTCI’ll wait a few extra weeks for the percolator — it’ll save me countless weeks from future extraction anyway. Thanks for the insight!

2023-05-06 13:26:29 +0000 UTCHello Sean, a Buchner funnel is more for filtering, and there is no control mechanism to restrict the flow, which is needed for a good extraction. And yes, unfortunately, the popularity of the How to make an Extract video (along with cold brew coffee enthusiasts, I hear dropping funnels are stellar for that purpose) has caused dropping funnels to be hard to get. You can go to the maceration route, with a big jar, and then use a Buchner funnel to filter it, just get a big funnel so it doesn't take forever to filter. You will get good yields with that method as well.

2023-05-02 21:39:57 +0000 UTCHi, Darcy. Would it be acceptable to use a Buchner filtering funnel in place of a dropping funnel? Having a hard time finding the dropping funnel, per some comments above! Mostly looking to create extractions of herbs / botanicals / etc. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

2023-05-02 03:44:20 +0000 UTCThanks Mary, and yes, I hope these videos help people get an advantage when they open their soda fountains, bar and restaurants by creating unique drinks.

2023-02-10 15:17:36 +0000 UTCThank you for the list. I want to tell you how important your work is. I am opening a restaurant that sells only small batch pop and house made sodas served by a traditional jerk. I would not have thought of hiring out of work bartenders with your history background in Fix the Pumps. What a great read it was! I only wish you could come here and help me design and run the Jerks. Thank you again for all you are doing.

2023-01-20 12:56:24 +0000 UTCWhen I first ordered my dropping funnels, the owner saw "Art of Drink" and was curious what I was doing, he sells lots of stuff to artists/painters, so the drink name intrigued him. I explained and eventually sent him a link to the Extract video and he can't keep them in stock very long. If I use some new glassware I'll have to get "priority lab equipment access" as a perk of being a patron. Cheers
