A Night in Tunisia

Since its creation in 1942 by Dizzy Gillespie, A Night in Tunisia has stood as one of the most recognizable and frequently performed jazz standards. The tune was revolutionary in its time, weaving together bebop’s daring harmonic lines with Latin rhythmic patterns that gave it a strikingly modern character. Its infectious bass line and driving rhythm created a soundscape that musicians like Charlie Parker used to showcase virtuosic improvisation.

Over the decades, it has been recorded and reinterpreted by countless artists, highlighting its versatility as both a vehicle for fiery improvisation and a foundation for endless variations. This has solidified the piece as a reference point for jazz musicians and listeners alike.

I’ve been wanting to make a cover of A Night in Tunisia for quite some time, but my main challenge was shaping the theme in a way that works well for fingerstyle. The goal was not to make it overly complicated, but to keep the arrangement balanced, carrying both the melody and chords together so it sounds full and rich on the guitar.

For the final section, I arranged the chords Em, Eb9#11, Dm7, G9#11, C9#11, and Gb7#9 as arpeggios on the guitar. This keeps a flowing texture without clashing, while the melody is carried by the piano in the backing track.

As a finishing touch, I added drum and bass parts with a hip hop groove and a slightly lo-fi character. This gives the arrangement a fresh, modern edge while still letting the jazz harmonies and fingerstyle guitar shine through.
