New Music - Ward Lock

This composition is all about the interlocking of various rhythmic relationships.  The main piano ostinato is written in 5/8, but made ambiguous by the lowest note occurring on the 2nd eighth note.  This ambiguousness is furthered with the melody being in 3/8.  If I did it right, different listeners will perceive the beginnings and endings of phrases differently!

Another interesting thing about the production of this track is the use of “piano as percussion.” Neo-classical music is known for its ‘intimate’ piano productions.  Sometimes the sounds of felt, hammers, bench creaks, and pedals are just as much a part of the composition as the melodies and harmonies.

I’d like to explore those sounds more intentionally, as I did in this composition. At 1:30, I’m using samples of piano pedals, hammers, and strings in the same way I would create a drum or percussion track.

If you like this track, you might also be interested in Myriad3’s version of it. Much faster and hard hitting!  Also, similar to Pluie Lyonnaise, it has origins in Pico-8.  It’s a combination of the tracks Reflection and Ableton Assembly from the Last Bot.
