2378 - A message containing the instructions for 8,300 spaceships is received. The instructions include plans for 7000 warships.
Panic.
Why has this been sent? Is it a natural progression from the previous types of ship? Has humanity been deemed worthy, or trustworthy, enough for a fleet of warships? Is there an imminent threat? Are the senders of the messages wanting us to join them in a war? Or do they want us to fight one for us?
In the 24th century, building even 7000 spaceships isn’t the huge undertaking it would have been at the beginning of the WF Era. Science and technology have advanced remarkably, orbital factories and manufacturing plants make producing raw materials and components much easier.
The ships get built. 7000 warships. Distributed throughout the Solar System to all states and territories above a certain size. Most remain under the control of Earth, but Mars, Luna, the asteroid belt, Jupiter and Saturn all get substantial numbers. The outermost colonies, around the ice giants or in the Kuiper Belt get just a few ships between them. Politics, even in this post-scarcity society, still play a part, and humanity will come to regret not sharing the warships around more generously.
War comes.
