Evolution not revolution

Towards the end of the 23rd century, humankind had already made progress in this area. Some limited WF ships had been built without alien blueprints, but they were pretty limited. Only in the latter years of that century did science really manage to crack WF physics. The resulting ships had many similarities with the original designs, but many differences too. Human WF tech evolved, in many cases, a WF Plate. This was a slab of tungsten/ceramic alloy that acted as a frame for the east of the ship to be built around - and often underneath. This design was the result of neural networks running trillions of simulations - and once again, the exact reasons this design worked was somewhat mystifying.
An advantage of these new WF ships, with the WF Plate technology, was the huge reduction in cooling down time of the WF Drive. In most cases this was reduced from days or weeks, down to hours.
