Poll 91 Results, Poll 92 and This Week
Added 2025-10-13 08:35:30 +0000 UTCWe actually had a tie! Modern Arty/CAS and Infantry Firepower both got 8 votes. We're still rolling with the BAOR content for now, so I think the infantry are going to get this one.
Though it might be a little different than usual. We're also down for a Basics video this week and I've been meaning to introduce some kind of standardised testing for the infantry after doing so for the vehicles with the mobility test.

The current test is basically time-to-kill at different distances, coupled with ammo expenditure. That's ok in certain circumstances, and it can tell us a little bit, but it can be very swingy thanks to having spotting built in. There's definitely been a few times where the shooters have totally failed to spot the target. That's not meaningless- it can be hard to spot a man-sized target at 300m- but it's not going to help anyone figure out how best to use their infantry.
So the idea is to instead get some pure rounds-per-minute at different ranges using area fire. That should give us a better idea of squad potential firepower- not actual firepower, especially not on a two-way range- but it should produce some more interesting and hopefully more useful data.
It might be worth also adding in other details, like antitank potential and the presence of special equipment- radios, NVGs, body armour, thermals, demo charges etc.; but we'll see.
That shouldn't be too difficult to produce and explain, so I should get a couple of days worth of plate-spinning this week, because boy, do some of those plates need some momentum.
Anyway, that's this week. In poll terms, we're back round to WW2 where we've got Arty/CAS and- funnily enough- Infantry Firepower on the menu.

There's a mission in the American campaign in SF2 which would make for a good follow up to this one if there is a way to pull single missions out. I know you have been doing a lot of modern stuff lately. The mission is screening with ATGM Stykers and helos.

2025-10-14 12:17:16 +0000 UTCOK, honestly the better comparison should be between small one team dismount (Modern PzGren and Soviet motor rifle squads are not meant to be split, they are too small) plus their IFV compared to larger squads on APCs.

2025-10-13 21:58:08 +0000 UTCI was wondering about an infantry mobility test system. Literally, how well they do on foot in various terrains and distances. How tired will they get and long does it take? Is it really all cookie cutter for units, or is there more nuance than expected? Laying down a mass of firepower is vital for tactical success, but you have to get in position first and in some order to make the most of that position.

2025-10-13 17:23:03 +0000 UTCSince armored infantry often trades off a smaller squad for the vehicle mobility & firepower, might we include in the test how much the vehicle MG adds to firepower?
