A Teaser...

I'm taking this week off from videos, but next week is the channel anniversary, and it felt right that I finally talk about the incredibly odd Lord of the Rings script written by John Boorman in the 70s. It's a fever dream, so here's a little extended teaser trailer of my some of my favorite (or least favorite?) moments! See y'all next week!

I hate replying to myself but I must. I just watched the full video and I so get it. Sadly, I do get it. The 70s were weird. I would have been good with the cod liver oil-tasting lembas because it would have been played for laughs much like Jackson's version of Pippen. Arwen would never have been 13 in the final version but instead it would have been explained that she looks that young because elves age so much slowly than men so she only looks that young - because Hollywood was filled with creeps long before Harvey Weinstein and Arwen could then be justified being played by a young teen. Thanks for going through the whole script so the rest of us don't need to needlessly suffer. And you are so right in that it really shows us that adaptions can be far less to source than Peter Jackson's films.

I'd never heard of this conception from back when I was in high school. So I did a quick search. OMG! I'm so glad this never happened.

It's John Boorman, so I get it, but also, I do not think I am ready for this. I tried to explain Zardoz to someone once, and they thought I was making everything up until I showed them clips.

Man this is about the 2nd or 3rd time that I have heard about this bizarre take on LOR. I need to find a copy to read. In the 2000's there was a great online comic book styled website called "DM of the Rings". The author used screenshots from the movie but wrote his own captions for each panel. There were dozens of episodes. I'm gonna have to see if it's still out there. Good stuff especially if you also liked D&D. It was a campaign based on LOR and the PCs interactions were hilarious!

Blakedel

If you haven't, read the 1969 Harvard Lampoon satire Bored of the Rings; I thought it's hilarious.

Understandably

Jessica Gliot

There's a part of this script that is...oddly familiar to that scene! John Boorman was an excellent filmmaker, but also a very strange one

Jessica Gliot

he barely has hair. liam neeson, in an unspeaking role can be seen in the background as one of the knights of the round table

Graves

"What's this? What's this....? I never saw this!" Great cast. Richard Bucket, Captain Picard with hair... I just might watch it again.

William Palmer

Just watch the opening scenes of Excaliber to see how Boorman can get weird. in particular when Uther 'gets it on' with Egraine to conceive Arthur. she's writhing under him-he's in FULL PLATRE ARMOR. sort of confirming 'safe sex' but seriously i don't want to think about that poor naked woman and...well..armor? the best part was his merlin and he was not the usual sterotype but a red bearded fragger in a silver skull cap and scarey as all get out. less the great wizard and more like the village weirdo

Graves

As long as it doesn't feature Ned Beatty as Sam, with the Fellowship on an unfortunate canoe trip down the Anduin... (minor Deliverance reference. My apologies)

William Palmer

Ah John Boorman. I still have nightmares of Zardoz.
