Chunk Love Update: Holy Freaking Mother of Backgrounds

You may have noticed... things been a little quiet on my end this month. But don't fear, I still have my comic work and patreon requests on the docket! I haven't been lollygagging... I've been hard at the anvil fixing the intro, writing in some new scenes to fix some issues to make the characters feel more in "community"...and...

BACKGROUNDS.

Probably one of the most daunting, intimidating tasks by far, was the creation of the visual backdrops of Chunk Love. I didn't want my backgrounds to just be random pictures pulled from the internet without any editing, obviously I don't want to cheapen my work with using Gen AI for my backgrounds, but I know for certain that illustrating them all by hand would be an absurdly tall order. So the best middle ground was to edit, photo bash, and work diligently to stylize a starting gallery of backgrounds. With the help of my good friends, I received good feedback on color grading, and such.

For example, I really loved the interior and angle of folks on this train, so I edited them to look like anthro animals napping and chilling in transit.

Spice Funk City, I envisioned being a dense whimsical city with interesting structures. I had to invent a city combining vistas from Shanghai, Singapore, and Rio de Janeiro to create a unique looking city! I miiight change some things around, but I'm very pleased with this current version!

In fact, I even paid for stockphoto images from dreamstime.com and shutterstock when I was at the end of my rope looking for free images on wikimedia, and other Renpy resources.

This room you are looking at below, does not exist! It was made with a combination of 3d Assets, pictures, and patterns to make an enviorment feel cohesive. I went near crazy making pulling this together.

Let me tell you, this has been an insane area of work, I seriously felt like I worked every spectrum of my art abilities to pull something together that felt visually satisfying, and could comfortable be the backdrop of a cartoon character. Editing pictures that existed, and photobashing images when what I had in mind only existed in my imagination.

My current collection of backgrounds! My next step if I have the time, is to draw over some of the lines in the edited pictures to "blend" it into my drawing style.

I also have been compositing assets and playing with particle effects with Davinci Resolve. If you miss Adobe After Effects, I reccomend Davinci (and I use it for free.)
