I find it odd she calls him an ascetic. Tian himself only defines himself by it because others call him that. But to be an ascetic he would have to be rejecting his desires and living in a certain way to achieve a goal of some sort, but as he's said before. Who is richer than him? He's just without many of the desires others have and so they call him ascetic because they couldn't live as... simply as him without being ascetic themselves. Feels weird she calls him that while looking into his mind somehow, maybe that's just me though what do y'all think?

Tickles my memory, I know that Buddhism has the Three Poisons that must be overcome, but I cannot remember if Daoism has an equivalent. In the conversation she hasbshe attacks Tian with each one of the Three Poisons too. First she tries to get him to hate, then she pulled at his sensual attachmemts, then attacked his metaphysical attachments. Not sure if that was intentional or just three really broad catagories fitting ontop of something else though.

2026-02-18 19:12:01 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter. Can’t wait to see where it goes. It’s interesting to see how the ancient bird is testing them. It might be funny to say but I feel like I’ve been tested before in similar ways, so I’m curious to see if the solution will be related to releasing ego. It would even make sense from the perspective of the previous Ancient Crane Monastery failing, since in some way the failure was born of those in power refusing to see or accept what was going on around them. Almost like the bird has been here this whole time and watched it fail, and is taking the initiative to train those that might create the next generation. It could then be argued that maybe the difference between the regular Heavenly Realm and the one above it (don’t remember the name, I just remember that some people have better enlightenment than others) is the presence of ego death, to an extent. But I’m just theorizing, it’s certainly an interesting story and I’m excited to see where it goes.

If Tian is within a longterm hallucination, what can he do about it? Unless he has a method by which to determine the veracity of that claim, it changes nothing about his circumstances.

2026-02-18 15:31:06 +0000 UTCI think the implication is that he isn't struggling with them, he's just accepting them. Th elder is looking for evidence that they can experience hardship and not break. I suspect the issue is that she can't really see his time in the dump because Gramps was so heavily involved in that time of Tian's life. "Don’t worry, I’m protected from such superficial methods, as are memories of me" Grandpa Jun was involved in all of Tian's early development of resiliency, so Grandma Crane can't "see" those parts of his life. Tian must seem like he's really good at ignoring trauma, rather than having already lived through and learned to deal with a lot of terrible things.
