I absolutely agree with what you said. The fact that Sodachi's story is the only one, which doesn't have anything to do with the supernatural makes her really special to me as well. It also makes this whole arc more realisitc. I think I'm also going to change my profile picture for now. Sodachi is great and needs a hug (and mental health support).

Watching this episode emotionally devasted me just like the first time I’ve seen it. I think a huge part of this is due to the outstanding voice acting of Sodachi’s VA, Marina Inoue. It felt to me like an actual real-life person was venting about her trauma and not just some anime character. I particularly love how during this arc we dive deeper and deeper into the whole Sodachi mystery as well as Araragi’s past/psyche with each episode. At first Sodachi is introduced like some kind of math-obsessed selfish asshole. Then we learn about the class assembly and that her own teacher basically betrayed and used Sodachi as a scapegoat for her own selfish goal while Araragi didn’t even say anything about it. However, this still doesn’t explain her seemingly “irrational hatred” for Araragi. Then in the next episode we see her violent emotional outburst at Araragi, which at first makes her even more unlikable but also makes us think that there is sth. more to it. In the following episodes we do learn more about her and Araragi’s past. We now know what she meant with “I hate water that thinks it boiled itself” and the fact that Araragi didn’t understand her “cries for help” and has then forgotten about her, making her feel even more betrayed and hopeless (but of course he was just a child himself). Now everything’s clear, right? Nope, there is still a lot more to her story as we’ve seen in this episode. The two of them were, in fact childhood friends (not for long tho), which Araragi has also forgotten about but most importantly, we learn about the main reason for her hatred. It’s a self-defense mechanism. We learn that she understands that Araragi is not really at fault but she still needs someone to hate or she’s going to break completely otherwise. However, my favorite thing about Sodachi and this arc is the fact that it has nothing to do with the supernatural. It’s the story of abuse, domestic violence, trauma, a broken family and hopelessness. Sodachi is a really realistic and very unfortunate character (even though she says otherwise to convince herself). But in a way she is right that her situation is not uncommon. It’s definitely not normal but also not uncommon. Peak writing 10/10 arc

2025-08-30 17:38:51 +0000 UTC19:27 - 19:57 Dear lord.... I've rewatched monogatari so many times but this voice acting always gets me like tearing up. Had to change my profile picture to the good ol days when I first watched monogatari for this oikura special. I'm sure others will point out more on the episode analysis, so I'll just share some of the reasons why oikura is special even amongst the crazy stacked character rosters of monogatari imo. One of them is that in a story where problems are shown through the lenses of oddities, oikura.... was the only one without oddities. She didn't lean onto any oddities for help or to look away from her problems. There's no oddities to blame, there's no oddities to fight against, no oddities to use and run away from her problems with. All she could do within the scope of reality, was to blame and hate everyone, mostly araragi, but also herself to survive. Idk what nisio isin has against childhood friends bro. He saved all these girls, but he couldn't save both his childhood friends nadeko and oikura. One leant so heavily onto oddities that she turned into one, and the other couldn't lean onto any oddities so she faces her problems as a normal human. The polar opposites are crazy.
