One of my favorite episodes here tbh. At the heart of it all, Mono is a coming-of-age tale. A series ultimately about confronting yourself, being true to your desires, and growing up. This is a lesson I feel like so many people never really learn. Closure is tough for both sides, Kanbaru is trying to push Shinobu into confronting it. Ultimately, there's no benefit to it from an objective standpoint, he'll be exorcised and killed either way. Shinobu could even be swayed or feel something for him as a result of seeing him again and what would be the point of that? She'll just get hurt at the loss of him, right? She has a duty to be cruel to him, to reject him, to push him away. It'll hurt, she could just as easily run away and never see him, it would objectively change nothing, but it'll be a regret and an internal problem going forward. Kanbaru really earned a place on the podium of best girl contenders with this one. One thing I wanted to comment on as well, is a translation thing in this episode, the "Are you okay with that outcome" or whatever they made it when Shinobu was spelling out the situations that could happen to Kanbaru.. She would spell out the potential situation and then say "Sore demo ii?" which translates to "Is that good?" to which Kanbaru would echo it back to her "Sore demo ii!" or "It is good!" It's a minor thing, but I really liked the more literal translation for that scene because it's not just a "are you okay with this?" kind of question but more of a "would that be a good thing?" question. It becomes more of an objective question rather than a subjective question, that even if the outcome would seem bad from the "side" that Kanbaru is on, it was still something Kanbaru believed was the right thing to do. . Whenever I reference this episode I always end up quoting those lines back to back because to me that's the iconic part. It's the part where Shinobu had to recognize she lost.
