Owarimonogatari Episode 6 Reaction

OUGI'S IDENTITY

Comments

I was very lost/confused the first time I've watched the Monogatari series so I couldn't figure out Ougi's identity until the reveal. You guys have actually understood much more about this series than i did during my first watching. However, after rewatching the series with the reveal in mind Ougi quickly became one of my all time favourite characters. There are lots of clues throughout the series hinting at her true identity but also lots of missdirects that make you think that she's the darkness. The biggest clue has to be Ougi's catchphrase: "I don't know anything, it's you who knows, Araragi-senpai", which she only says to Araragi. Also, yeah i agree that they do look alike. Ougi and Araragi basically have the same colour scheme and Ougi is also the only character beside Araragi who uses a bike to get around (I'm pretty sure they have the exact same bike). There's even a scene in the opening of this arc where Ougi leaps into the air on her bike in the exact same way as Araragi in Bakemonogatari's ending . I think you are pretty spot on with Ougi being Araragi's Tiger but as you've said it's a bit more nuanced. The biggest difference, however is probably the fact that Hanekawa's Tiger never lied about it's identity but Ougi did so by calling herself "Ougi Oshino", which is why the darkness will appear as soon as her identity is exposed.

13:06 You can actually read Nadeko's manga. It has only three chapter though. If you search for "Anime Monogatari Series Heroine Book 4: Sengoku Nadeko" you should be able to find it.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that rewatching this series with Ougi's identity being confirmed made it way more enjoyable for me. As others have already said, you can go through every past Ougi interaction and spend hours analyzing her and, by extension, Araragi's character. Tsukihi is one of the most interesting characters I've seen, and this conversation with Ougi, which a lot of people sadly gloss over, reveals a lot of her complexities. Nesa said that Tsukihi was "in a vulnerable state", when talking with Ougi. The thing is, Tsukihi is never in a "vulnerable state". She's incapable of feeling anxiety and stress like other characters. She doesn't have any internal conflicts. She exists in the present, but changes from moment to moment. Her emotions never linger, going from helpful, thoughtful listener to psychotic knife wielding maniac. Nisioisin likes using the "cutting your hair to mark the new beginning" trope. Well, Tsukihi's hair just keeps getting longer and longer. Every moment is a new beginning for her. Ougi, as a fellow being reliant on others to exist, is envious of Tsukihi's blissful ignorance, and that Araragi accepts her, regardless of her "true" identity. Even if Tsukihi was made aware of her true nature, she would probably just forget about it 15 minutes later, or just not care about it. There's even an argument to be made that she already knows. Very compelling execution of how a "non-human" human character could act.

The clues were there all along. Araragi is well known for loving his bike that he rides everywhere, so much that Senjougahara even pointed it out in Bake when first finding him after meeting the Rainy Devil for the first time. Who else is seen riding a bike everywhere? Also to bring back the discussion of catchphrases: Hanekawa: "I don't know everything, I only know what I know." Gaen: "There is nothing I don't know. I know everything" Ougi: "I don't know anything. You're the one who knows....**Araragi-senpai**" That's all for now, since there will be more explained next episode :) At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how long it took you to figure it out. What's important is thinking about what it means and figuring out what you can take from it. Yes, rewatches of this show are absolutely insanely good XD -As for when I found out Ougi's identity the first time, like you I had my suspicions that they were linked and her being an "alter ego" was one of my theories (as well as being a manifestation of the darkness) but I was never totally sure that the story wouldn't pull a fast one on me until it was finally revealed.

that scene of Ougi and Tsukihi pulling up to the cram school is almost 1 to 1 with Araragi and Senjou in episode 1 of bake. there's a vid on youtube that show's how close it is.

You were spot on. Ougi's catchphrase has always been "i don't know anything, you're the one who knows, Araragi-senpai", ofc she never said it to anyone else until the scene with Tsukihi (one of my favourite scenes in the series btw) so there was never a chance to know for sure whether she meant Araragi specifically or whoever she said it to at the time until now.

Ougi

Finally here huh haha, I figured out what Ougi was specifically during Sodachi Lost/Riddle area. I think that was the start of building up the theory. The second theory was 100% the darkness, it’s like author intent to make you think like that.

Lark

Haha, yes I figured out Ougi's identity many episodes ago. But, it is very fun seeing you figure it out in this episode!

Suddenly EVERY Ougi moment to this point is recontextualised entirely, it's incredible.
