It seems everyone is writing essay-length comments, so I'll keep mine short 😅 Owarimonogatari S2 is peak monogatari, it's crazy how well everything in the series comes together in this episode. Also, about why Oshino and Kagenui were at the north pole and south pole, it's due to Ougi meaning 'fan'. Hand fans are shaped like ' < ' which is the context used in that one scene describing the shape of the universe in a previous episode. Two fans placed opposite to each other would look like ' >< ' and if you rotate that 90 degrees, it would point to the north and south poles.

Ngl, this is definitely my most favorite anime line. Tho it is a little bit different from your version. "If you were to die tomorrow, I'd be fine with tomorrow being the last day of my life. if you were to live through today, I will also choose to live through today" and shinobu replied with "If you were to die tomorrow, I shall live for three days time and tell a tale about you to someone. I shall recite the story of my master with pride to a listening ear." It just overwhelmed me. Like that one line so perfectly portrays the progress of their complicated relationship. And also such an amazing callback/reference towards all the previous arcs. Starting from the scene in kizumonogatari, when he sits next to a sulking shinobu, and he had this inner monologue "we hurt each other, and then we lick each other's wounds. Now both damaged, we seek out each other. If you die tomorrow, my life ends tomorrow too. If you live today, I can survive the present too. The story of our damaged selves start now". Then the scene between shinobu and kanbaru where kanbaru said "Araragi said that if shinobu is going to die tomorrow, then I'm fine with my life ending tomorrow. But I'm sure that YOU wouldn't say something like that. And if you did, you'd say the same thing to the next one. You'll continue to say it forever and continue to live on forever" And it all leads to that one line. Now they're no longer together from an outcome of choosing an option where everyone is unhappy, but from their own personal wishes. And I love the way shinobu builds up on her reply by living to three days time just to recite araragi's story towards someone else. They'll both die, but their story will still live in someone else's head. Like this anime, I watched this final episode of araragi's story in 2018, and it's still living rent free in my head in 2025. Also that graduation photo of everyone. Man I wished that everyone would be in the picture, like kaiki, oshino, kagenui, izuko, nadeko. Like how were they able to sneak in that one friend of kanbaru that we barely even saw and not them. It's like that meme "You are on this council but we do not grant you the rank of master" ahh moment.

While Ougi as The Darkness is of course a red herring, it is also a bit of a characterisation for Ougi and Araragi alike. As a lovely bit of analysis on Ourorogi (Nesa bit her tongue in the most brilliant way here), I would like to emphatically recommend “Oshino Ougi: Best Girl in Any Viewing Order” by All the Media matters. A great lens to read Ougi through would be Carl Gustav Jung’s archetypal concept of the Shadow and I’m relatively certain, NisiOisiN later on even sets up a joke about Ougi (not) being Araragi’s Jungian Anima. As to your question why Ougi does the things she does to and for Araragi, a therapist would probably point out that even the inner critic is a survival strategy designed to keep us safe. When it becomes maladaptive and causes us harm in the form of self-hatred, we can’t just push it away with hippy-dippy slogans, but have to recognize and take responsibility for the fact that (regardless of the original cause) now it is us harming ourselves, not because we like to suffer, but because it kept us safer during times when we were harmed by others. I for one will strive to reframe my inner critic as a spooky anime girl that gives me opportunities for growth while being “a little overzealous” at times. Given, what Gaen tells us about Ougi’s creation, and Araragi’s conclusion that she would be able to use Shinobu’s skill to create matter ex nihilo AT LEAST, it is implied that she can also instantiate the powers of other oddities Araragi met. The power of the Lost Cow does not explain why Oshino left, but why Hanekawa’s secret mission was necessary to bring him back. Hanekawa to Ougi: “I win.” “Obviously, Araragi not showing us this” was a beautiful catch by Chillih. This scene is already quite intimate and gives me wedding and - given that Kiss-shot once lived as a god - even low key hierós gámos vibes. Araragi in black and blood. Shinobu in her gargantuan scarlet dress. The exchange of vows. Followed by the retreat behind the curtains of her wings to consummate the union. It has been pointed out here before, that this scene parallels the forced continued existence of Shinobu in Kizu, bookending the story so far. Araragi repeats his vow from back then and this time around, having grown so much, Shinobu now answers him with a vow of her own, relinquishing most of her god-like power of her own free will for happiness, love an connection. Sadly, I think, the translation you watched fucks up Shinobu’s vow quite a bit. In the original, she specifies three(!) days, to tell the tale of her master, to whomever will listen. I think the significance of threes is meant to emphasize the almost sacred earnestness of her intent. Also, the music in this episode is once again top notch. I absolutely adore the “Dark Cherry Mystery” motive as a swelling string arrangement in "Kawarimasen ne, Araragi-senpai" and the tenderness of “Shinjuu” gives me shivers and goosebumps. It builds the background to Ourorogi’s “double suicide” (also translatable as “lover’s suicide”) discussion. Kaori Mizuhashi’s performance as Ougi has always been subtle and she absolutely knocks it out of the park here, imho. PS: The girl holding back Kanbaru in the end card is Seiu Higasa, the new captain of the Basketball club after monkey girl retired. She is mostly there for characterization of Kanbaru. Karen alone seems not enough to restrain Kanbaru in her touchy-feely grief over the loss of her senpais.

Russell's teapot

This is indeed the end of the story... Well, it's actually just the end of Araragi's story arc or you could say that it is the end of his youth. It's the story of Araragi accepting himself for who he is, even his flaws. Honestly, this episode is 100000/10 for me but I don't really want to go into details since other commenters have already pointed out most important aspects. I just want to say that this is imo a perfect conclusion to Araragi's story of self sacrifice and self-doubt, a true "End Story". I love how much sense it makes in retrospect when you know that Ougi is simply Araragi's desire for self-punishment born out of his self-critique. Ever since Kizu he never could shake his insecurities about his own decision, such as saving Shinobu, still being friends with Hanekawa, etc. so when he knew that there exists a force that punishes those who go against the rules he subconciously created his own "darkness". This is such a cool concept for me and Araragi is such a great and complex character. Also, yes it's insane to rewatch this show. You notice soooo many things, yet there is still always something new that you haven't noticed each time you rewatch this show. This is also a part of why it's so fun for me to watch your reactions and listen to your theories etc. In conclusion, Monogatari is peak
