I like that you really understand and grasp authors intent of the MC being flawed intentionally. It adds impact and weight into getting a do over and rooting for succes in that do over. more over, you expect mistakes along the way and not instant success either. People find the show controversal mostly from a perspective of clip baiting and no actual context. Or if they did watch they watched very little. The drip the backstories and pscyhology along the way and not all at once and they simply didn't want to understand the MC before passing judgement. and lets be fair, some of that judgement is deserved, but taking time to understand it, and wanting him to change is part of journey. I mean look at society as a whole. Prisons aren't just for locking people up they are for rehabilitating right? And as a society we're told "people make mistakes, they should learn from them". But somehow when it comes to works of fiction people suddenly expect flawless hero characters and if they so much as do anything shady it means author is a monster and character is bad. When did people get this way? and why is it extra harsh toward anime? nobody is complaining about books or movies about these topics that have existed for decades but this medium gets extra judgement. TL/DR. just enjoy the story and well built workd and characters (flaws and all) and enjoy a journey of a questionable man getting a do over.

2025-12-15 04:08:48 +0000 UTCThis show can be quite uncomfortable to watch sometimes but that's also the reason why I like it so much. It does not shy away from uncomfortable topics and handles them in such a realistic and "raw" way. For example Rudy is pretty fucked in the head due to his past trauma, which still heavily affects him. Other anime would tone down the way he behaves/what kind of person he was/is but not Mushoku Tensei. This show is not afraid to show you how creepy and pathetic he was but it also shows you why he is the way he is and his desire to start a new life in this world. Even though he's not a saint or sth you can't help but root for him to overcome his past. You will see much more of that in future episodes but I don't want to say too much so that I don't spoil you. Either way Mushoku Tensei is one of the best written anime that I've watched and I think it's character writing is on par with Monogatari but in a different way.

2025-11-06 13:51:29 +0000 UTCWe’re never given Rudy’s past name. Is that a spoiler? You would have to experience the entire story to get that answer, but yeah, it’s a story about him choosing THIS life, DESPITE his past life, so his past name wouldn’t matter, would it?

2025-11-05 05:19:29 +0000 UTCBuilding on my essay from the first episode, Rudy’s interpretation of the magic system genuinely gives him an advantage. Their world is primitive, it’s reached the Middle Ages while contending with monsters and individuals who far surpass everyone else, and the common person has far less reason to steer towards our form of rational given the life that’s available to them. What I’m trying to say is that our world, with our innovation and history and science and literature, gives Rudy an obvious advantage, at least in the current context. The entire magic system is extremely simplified so any commoner theoretically has access to it. Because of those restraints, people are encouraged to believe in it blindly. Rudy however has passing knowledge of the stuff from our world, and in the manga, it’s explained he applies real science to his magic. Like he doesn’t just cast spells anymore by recreating the sensation, he’s learned to improve and improvise spells as well, and that storm he made during his graduation test is the perfect example. Mages in this world use magic blindly believing it works because they have proof, so when they make a storm for an example, they just picture the storm in its entirety and fully commit to that idea. Rudy knows about the water cycle… In the manga, it’s explained Rudy didn’t just make a bigger storm than Roxy. He used his understanding of hot and cold air pressure, humidity, stuff like that, to create a storm that basically fed itself and lasted like an hour or more, whereas Roxy’s lasted maybe 10-20 minutes? Roxy is a perfect example of a talented mage in this world, she pictures big scary storm if she’s making a storm, but compared to Rudy and our 21st century, national weather channel practically playing in the back of his mind, she can’t compare. All the magic he uses in this story is interesting and thought out. Unfortunately the show doesn’t give that part of his character enough attention, but for a disappointing neet, at least he wasn’t a dumbass. What I love most about this show is it handles the protagonist like an individual with competent knowledge. He’s not a genius, but he kinda is in a world like this. He’s not godlike, but he kinda is simply because he’s not bogged down by outdated conventions. He’s not a monster waiting to be unleashed, he’s just a dude figuring out what works and what doesn’t. The beginning of this show will always be magical to me, because it plays its cards honestly, aiming for the follow through rather than a victory.

2025-11-05 02:38:46 +0000 UTCI will go over the magic ranking system again because it's referred to slightly differently in the community and certain translations but this should give you the general idea: Beginner -> Beginner Intermediate -> Intermediate Advanced -> Advanced Sacred -> Saint Royal -> King Imperial -> Emperor Divine -> God Every school of study follows a similar pattern (including martial ones) and doesn't really transfer into others. Rudy is now considered a Saint level water mage, but he wouldn't be a Saint level fire mage for example unless he learned up to that level of fire magic.

2025-11-05 02:37:21 +0000 UTCRoxy is 37 years old in episode 2, but her race lives around 200 years on average so she is still pretty young.
