I sincerely thought the Doctor was gonna regenerate when the knocks started towards the end of the episode. I was so scared and sad lol.

yes, you described this so well. i think this is certainly one of the best episodes but i don't know if i could rewatch it for the foreseeable future, it was so anxiety-inducing and painful in that way!

Emme

Since you already looked it up: After S4 they took a year off and filmed these specials to bridge the gap between S4 and S5. The Next Doctor was xmas 2008, then the specials were spread through 2009, ending with another 2-part xmas special yeah. This is probably my fav special of the whole show. Writing, production design, acting, story, plot implications etc... all 10/10 fire. I wish they explored this 'time lord victorious' arc more with some more eps. its easy to say in hindsight but Waters of Mars should have been the 1st or 2nd special and the rest should have been unhinged Doctor "I can do anything" time lol. [edit] me when you say "this reminds me of Mouthwashing", knowing how the episode ends..... oop

This episode answers the all important question: why does the doctor bring companions? A being with that kind of awesome power and responsibility needs some kind of grounding. Needs a link to humanity and the small scale. He’s an individual with godlike knowledge and technology and virtually no oversight. At the end of the day, the companion is somebody to answer to. Donna once said, “because sometimes I think you need someone to stop you.” Losing Donna just completely set the Doctor adrift. As tragic as it is, this episode is, in a way, a testament to Donna’s presence. Without her, everything just feels… wrong. The costume design is top tier. The water alien design is so technically creative and visually disturbing. It’s iconic for sure. All in all, I’d describe this episode as “relentlessly devastating.” I’ll be honest, sometimes I skip it in my rewatch purely due to the emotional turmoil you go through just watching it. They linger on the dying scenes, the audio is agonizing. The Doctor’s internal conflict is brutal to watch. And at the end of the day, the Doctor does what we all sort of hoped which was save them… and it’s even more heartbreaking. The doctor broke the rules and so instead of Brooks getting to die in a heroic fiery explosion, he makes her final moments a) listening to his ego trip and b) putting a gun to her own head to rectify his mistake. How horrible. This belongs in a “best of” ranking of doctor who. Certainly one of the darkest episodes. Just good TV overall.
