Ooof. That's quite a reach. I definitely wouldn't call that movie "great" by any stretch of the imagination. If you want great, Paul has done many 8th Doctor stories with Big Finish. And as those productions are officially canon, Paul McGann is actually the longest serving Doctor...eclipsing even Tom Baker's longevity in the role. The biggest problem with the movie is that it is too "American". The filming style. The horrible casting (Eric Roberts as The Master 🤮). The insipid, meaningless "plot". Paul couldn't even portray The Doctor the way he wanted. The hairstyle and foppish clothing was all decided by the production staff and McGann has been on record as saying he hated that look. So, yes Emme, check out some 8th Doctor adventures. Just avoid that godawful movie like the plague.

aw i loved reading all of this, especially how meaningful the doctor look is to you!!! that's so cool you did it as your first ever cosplay!

Emme

perhaps one day!

Hi Emme, would you consider watching the Doctor Who movie, with 8th doctor Paul Mcgann? It's a great one.

Karen also played "Ruby Roundhouse, killer of men" in Jumanji.

The Dog Walker

I think most of us would prefer raw reactions, even if that means Emme occasionally misses hints in the show. Having fans point her attention to a plot clue she would otherwise maybe not have noticed takes away that 'genuine first watch' experience. It's easy to forget when you're a long time fan that most people don't notice everything first time around, which is a good thing, it adds value to rewatching.

I forgot how great this episode was. I was legit smiling all the way through, and i watched it a lot as a teen. I kept catching myself mouthing a lot of The Doctors line. I forgot how much I really connected with 11! It's almost hard to believe that Karen Gillian then went on to be Nebula in guardians as well. Here's a random fun fact, after the airing of this episode, Bow Tie sales went up by 94% in one of the UKs most popular clothing stores. I probably accounted for some of the sales because I wore bow ties back then and did for a while 🤣

David Doyle

Just a bit of a hint because Emme seemed confused about it. That’s all :)

Welcome to the Moffat Era!

Season 5 is the start of a new showrunner, Steven Moffat. During seasons 1-4 + specials, Russel T Davies (RTD) was the showrunner. Steven Moffat was a writer during that era (he wrote "are you my mummy", The Library eps and Blink among others) and created BBC Sherlock. So here we have not just a new doctor and new companion but also a new showrunner, as well as a revamp in style / production as the BBC wanted to invest more and try new stuff. When people talk about the show they often talk about "eras" based on the showrunner too e.g "RTD era", "Moffat era", as they very much set the style and tone for everything and write a majority of the episodes + season arcs.

You said, “He’s got more…” but couldn’t find the right word. My word would be “whimsical.” 11 is most certainly the doctor of whimsy from this very first episode. It’s such a stark contrast to the end of 10’s run, which was quite grim. Little Amelia Pond in her red Cadigan and red wellies is so freaking cute. That’s Karen Gillan’s (Amy) [cousin], actually. Also, you may recognize Karen Gillan as Nebula from the MCU. This was her big break before MCU, Jumanji, etc. EVERYTHING is different: the actors, many writers, the Tardis, the show runner, the directing, the music, the intro/outro, the branding, the film style, the budget, etc. It kind of feels like a whole new show in a way that didn’t happen when we switched from Eccleston to Tennant. It can be a bit overwhelming but I think it’s good. Not only do I think some of those changes are improvements, it would have been sort of an unfair disadvantage to plop Matt Smith into David Tennant’s realm. Tennant was just so beloved. While the change is a lot, the show has undergone similar transformations in the past but stayed the same show faithfully. So don’t be concerned. If you remember when David Tennant regenerated, he also physically unwell. His was in and out of consciousness, puffing clouds of regeneration energy, and completely confused. It’s just what happens when the Doctor’s entire body changes. One of the quirks of 11 that I love is how he starts talking to someone, takes on that body language (steady eye contact and facing them directly and maybe too closely), but then starts talking to other people, spouting off an explanation, or rambling to himself. He’s so distracted, he doesn’t change his original body language though so he stays locked onto one very confused person lol. We saw it like four times in this episode and I think it’s so funny. That Doctor look (bowtie, suspenders, etc.) was my first cosplay I ever did of any show. That look is so sentimental to me. And as a side note, as you may imagine, that year there like a million people dressed up sexy police Amy Pond for Halloween lol. It’s okay to still be sad about David Tennant being gone. That wound won’t heal overnight and maybe never completely. My heart still aches for every doctor that has come and gone. But every hello still fills me with excitement and renewed energy. Doctor Who, at its very heart, is an embrace of change- the joy and the sorrow.
