Agreed, ultimately this (and the sexist writing and cringe humour) is what had me give up on the show until recently lol. Series 5 is a great one, 6 is fun enough but you're very right that it gets a bit boring to go through the same tropes over and over. Does it make much sense? Absolutely not. Is it fun and exciting in the moment if you forget the past? Yeah!

2025-01-22 12:23:48 +0000 UTCHere you see the MASSIVE difference in how Davies does cliffhangers, and how Moffat does them. Davies was all about that old tradition of literally leaving people in danger. Think of the end of Stolen Earth, where the doctor is shot and regenerating, Sarah Jane Smith is about to be killed by Daleks, and the Torchwood crew are about to die as well. You think "how can they POSSIBLY get out of this?" and then in the first five seconds of the next episode everything is resolved peacefully. Just like the old movie reels for Flash Gordon or Batman ... But Moffat builds this complex story that hits story beats over the course of two episodes. His cliffhangers are more integrated into the narrative, not just a cheap trick like Davies would have been. I love that about Moffat. I love his way of crafting such a compelling story, and the cliffhanger matches that energy. at least, in my opinion. lol

2025-01-22 12:03:34 +0000 UTCMoffat does do a lot of flashy writing, and it can be fun. But he will ignore things from previous episodes if they don't suit the story he wants to tell now, even if it was his own story. In "Blink" Sally took pictures of angels, and Larry and Sally both did a fair amount of looking at angel's eyes. The joke about leaving the brakes on ignores the fact that other timelords flying tardises make the same noise in older episodes. In its long history Dr Who has probably trodden on its own toes dozens of times, but Moffat will do it willingly just so he can make the audience go "wow" or "haha". It is still an enjoyable era, there is a lot of fun ahead, but you may find yourself at times scratching your head asking if some things really make sense in line with the stories you have already been shown. Personally, I was left wondering how much some of these moments and twists were worth it. "Wibbly wobbly" only gets you so far....
