This is 1 of 2 episodes by new to Who writer Jamie Mathieson. This is actually the 2nd one he wrote, he also wrote the next episode first, which Moffat was so impressed by he immediately asked him to do another one which turned out to be this episode. I personally think his two episodes are among the best new writer debuts in modern Who. The sweets the Doctor offers are jelly babies, a favourite of the 4th Doctor in particular, who 12 sounds suspiciously like during the monologue when hes talking to himself in his cabin. The 4th Doctor was also involved with mummies of a sort in the classic serial Pyramids of Mars. Lots of clever little nods in this one as well as just a very well written, tight, interesting episode that further explores the relationship dynamic of Doctor and companion adding more layers and complications to it.

2025-09-02 13:24:22 +0000 UTCI have a theory to explain this episode, even though it’s not that explanatory lol basically if you remember back to S5, after Amy and Rory’s wedding, the Doctor gets a call saying that there’s an Egyptian Goddess loose on the Orient Express—in space— but we never actually see it. I think the Doctor, Amy and Rory did come here, but the mummy wasn’t active at this time, still inside of the Sarcophagus, but maybe when the Doctor found and solved the mystery of the goddess loose on the train, it came out. Maybe it was afraid of her or something idk. But it does make sense that a mummy would be present since the Egyptian mythology ties in to both scenarios.
