So I've spent the past week focusing on Combat. It's the thing I hear feedback on the most and personally I feel like it needs some tweaks. I've been trying to figure out how to make it better without fundamentally changing it.
I like that it's fast and hands off for the most part, I like that enemies are obstacles to avoid rather than things to go after. I think that makes sense in the world and means that the game doesn't get bogged down in combat as that is not the focus.
I think the main problem comes down to you weren't getting anything for combat, The enemies are obstacles but getting caught felt annoying.
I don't want a traditional combat system as that gets very heavy into RPG and it doesn't feel like it suits the game. I played around with rhythm based combat but it got annoying having to do it multiple times.
I also tested out an xp and level system, but felt like it encouraged grinding and being over levelled too much.
I've landed on a solution that I'm happy with and linked into another idea I was building out. Now when you defeat enemies you get "Combat points" the name will change in future due to the unfortunate acronym. I'm adding adventures guilds to the towns and in the guilds you can exchange these points for decorations. So it fits into the lore of the world and it means that combat now gives you something, so when you get caught it's like "well at least I get some points from this". As it's cosmetic decoration only, players don't feel forced to grind anything out, but they are able to if that's what they want to do. I might expand the guild in the future with different challenges and rewards etc.
