this comment section is so cathartic to read through. i had to pause when the dad is eating the dumplings and lower my blood pressure because this show are refusing to acknowledge the difference between dysfunctional family and abusive parent. gaslighting and victim blaming poor joke, calling the encounter with his dad "an argument" as if it was between equals...what argument?? joke turned up humble and contrite and caring, with earnestness and homemade food and a request he asked for with grace and humility even in his desperation. asshole doctor took potshots at him and was cartoonishly, almost unrealistically cruel in return just to be a bully i guess. finally prompting joke to say one single truth--that he turned out this way because of how he was raised. and then the dad reiterated his disowning and then KEPT the dumplings?? he don't deserve those!!! that's not an "argument" any more than that torture scene between boss and hope was a "fight". i was enjoying this show so much before but the pacing through these sections of just repeat abuse heaped on the main characters who are suddenly helpless against any of it and can't even be arsed to communicate clearly about it to work together to get out of their situations? boring. tiresome. contrived for the sake of runtime i guess because it's dragging out and resorting to bad conflict writing and we hate to see it. i hope it picks back up in the last stretch and they lay off with the moralizing tone here, and i hope that classist, cruel, abusive father chokes to death on a dumpling, i'm so mad lol

2025-05-09 11:57:01 +0000 UTCI'm sick of these shows telling people that their abusive parents actually love them very much. We all know that horrible dad is about to get his redemption arc. No, not every parent loves their child. It's incredibly privileged to think that way. Man these shows make me so mad sometimes.
