Holding on too long leads to clinging, but letting go too soon leads to falling.

Clutter is contextual: if my treasures get in your way, they are clutter.

Silence is more valuable than noise.

If you have to finance it, you can’t afford it.

It’s easier to enjoy the summer if you aren’t fretting about winter.

A wrong thing done to an adversary is still wrong.

Everything is negotiable if you’re willing to walk away.

Simplicity is an experience, not a prescription.

A liberated mindset is the greatest legacy.

Letting go is contagious.

“What is your Beyoncé?” - the journey itself. There have been so many end goals that didn’t seem to have much meaning once I made it there, or at least not as much meaning as I thought it would, but that journey was gold.

Really enjoyed the nuanced conversation over Theo’s clip. Love you guys!

I would add something to the “vetting” process. I think a clean looking home is not always an indication of physical safety, it is definitely a more preferable environment.

Very much agree. When I first started listening to the Minimalists, it was to figure out the why and how to declutter. Having ousted those things that no longer serve me, I have shifted to being very conscious about what I bring into my life. My focus has shifted to the first link in the chain.

TerraCycle sells boxes for the collection and recycling/reuse of hundreds of different categories plastic goods that aren’t accepted in most city recycling programs. There is even a box that takes all categories in one. They aren’t cheap, but we consider it a chosen annual household cost that keeps us aligned with values. Those ziplock bags can be sent back to TerraCycle and remade into new useable goods. We place only metal and glass into our city recycle bin and all other plastics into these prepaid boxes (we purchase very little plastic to begin with). If you sign up for their email list, they hold sales a few times a year of 30% off the cost of these boxes, often on Earth Day and near the holidays, and they come in multiple sizes. Hopes this inspires someone to take the extra step to keep their plastic waste out of the ocean! 🌻

So many good nuggets today.

Yes! Silence is so underrated. At my job, I have to have Spotify on all day. Towards the end of the day, I'm so tired of singing and I switch to classical/orchestral (even if it's instrumental versions of pop songs), and by the time I'm leave, I don't want to hear anything. When I get home, I sit in a comfy chair in my back yard and just decompress. I also find an aural peace on the rare occasions that the power goes out, and all my appliances stop humming and making their electrical noises.

josh, i'm so glad that you and bex will not be allowing ella to be on social media until she turns 18. at what age do you think you will allow her to have a cell phone? i'm asking because i want to share your answer with my children as they make decisions about this issue for their own children. i especially like how actress jennifer garner handled the social media option with her own child, who is a teen now. she told her daughter to bring her research that clearly states that social media is healthy for her. of course her daughter couldn't find any such evidence, and is in fact grateful that she is not permitted to use it.

YES! This would be a great listener tip for the show. If you're interested, please email a voice memo to podcast@themins.com and we'll feature your voice on a future episode.

“Recycling” gives the feeling that it’s okay to buy things, because they won’t be wasted…but that’s a lie we tell ourselves to keep burying. But sometimes “decluterring” works the same way, the important step is to stop the chain in its roots, to stop buying
