Chapter 111 – Life 62, Age 92, Martial Master 1

As a reward for his performance in the Trial, the prince had been awarded the position of Lord of Red Sword City. Moving his entire new retinue to the city took several weeks, and when it was finished, I was exhausted, but I didn’t have any time to rest. As soon as everything was settled, the prince called his council to determine how to proceed.

“As I am only a Martial Grandmaster 1, I need to spend my time raising my cultivation. Chancellor Fang will take charge of the council in my absence. Your only goal is to improve the city's prosperity sufficiently to allow me to swiftly advance through the Lord realm. Do whatever you need to do to make this happen.”

After giving everyone a firm look, he departed the room, leaving the council to rule in his stead.

I drew in a deep breath to help me concentrate.

“Ministers, you are the experts, and I will defer to your judgment on most things, but I need to be sure everything proceeds in the prince’s best interests. Let’s take the rest of the day to assess the city and see where we can find places to improve. We will reconvene tomorrow at noon.”

The ministers all agreed, so the council was dismissed. This began my stint as a city planner and manager. It wasn’t a role I had trained for, and it made me regret delegating away all my responsibilities in my last life, but I was determined to do my best to learn. These skills would be essential in the future.

My main vision for improving the city’s prosperity wasn’t too dissimilar to that of my last life. I wanted to raise up the lowest level of society. I viewed the city as a pyramid, and the mortals were its base. They were the foundation everything else was built upon. If we improved the lives of the mortals, we improved the lives of everyone.

Pulling out my designs for a pill factory would have been exceptionally foolhardy, so instead, I decided to work with several low-level alchemists to set up an Alchemy Association. Its goal was to train as many people as possible to make low-Rank pills. It was unlikely they would be able to find many people willing and able to make a significant number of Rank 0 pills, but I convinced the ministers to grant various benefits to anyone who did so.

I could not focus on my efforts on this task alone, though. I had to be involved in every area of the city, from planning celebrations for various festivals to making decisions on who to appoint to various important positions. The ministers were the experts, but they needed a firm hand to ensure that everything they did was to the prince’s benefit and not just their own.

For me, one of the most difficult tasks was working with the Minister of Justice. I didn’t have the cultivation level needed to power through situations, and while the minister was a Grandmaster, many families in the city also had Grandmasters. I had to learn to negotiate situations as best as possible to prevent fights from breaking out.

I wished I had a blessing that would guide me through these situations, but I didn’t. My ability to know how the slave technique would have me react had been causing problems ever since the prince’s Trial. It constantly tried to compel me to do things such as slapping the prince’s tutor when he couldn’t help with the pill toxin issue. I had begun completely ignoring what it told me to do.

I considered using some of my credits to boost my aptitude for city management, but in the end, I held off. While it would have been beneficial to learn my job faster, I didn’t feel like the purchase was necessary. This was something I could learn to do without the crutch of the System.

---------------------------------------------------

During this time, I completed a task I had put off for far too long.

My storage space was stuffed with pages from Emperor Li’s book, and I needed to get them transferred to my mental library.

“System, upgrade my library to be able to hold Rank 4 books.”

Cost 900,000 credits. Purchase Confirmed. 135,760,775 credits remaining.

I began trying to carefully read the pages, but they were nearly incomprehensible to me. Without the cultivation base of a Martial Lord, the information from the book seemed to reject me. I didn’t plan for this situation, but it only made another purchase I had been considering more important.

“System, I want to upgrade my library so that the information it records is always accurate. Even if I misread a passage, I want the stored copy of the book to be correct.”

Host’s current mental library is capable of storing information up to Rank 4. Upgrading the library to perfectly store information Rank 4 and below. Cost 10 million credits.

It was expensive, but it would save me considerable time in the future since I wouldn't have to reread each book several times to make sure my copy was accurate.

“Purchase.”

Purchase Confirmed. 125,760,775 credits remaining.

I began to read Emperor Li’s book again, and although the information still rejected me, checking the library showed that perfect copies of each page I read had been made. There were even blank pages for the parts of the book where information was missing.

Once everything was safely stored away, I burned the remains of the book so that no one would find them.

---------------------------------------------------

The council and I spent nearly two decades managing Red Sword City on the prince’s behalf.

There were issues, that was unavoidable, but I felt like we were slowly making progress. I didn’t know how much our efforts had improved the prince’s karmic energy gains, but looking at the city, I could tell that we had made a difference.

One of the most important projects we implemented was installing a new sewage system throughout the entire city. It wasn’t perfect since we didn’t have anyone with knowledge of how to properly design such a thing, but it dramatically improved the welfare of the city’s poorest districts.

Beyond that, the Alchemy Association was starting to bear fruit, and the city housed many new Disciple Alchemists. They couldn’t do much, but they could provide simple pills and powders. This put money in their pocket while also boosting the health and strength of the city’s citizens.

The development of the city was on a good track, and I was optimistic about where it could go in the future. That was when the prince called a meeting of the entire council.

He had just broken through to Martial Lord, and he needed karmic energy to continue advancing.

---------------------------------------------------

“Accumulation of karmic energy in this remote border village is too slow. We need to increase it,” the prince announced.

My body, weary from the work we had put in to improve the city, sagged a bit at his words. “My prince, we are doing everything possible, but increasing karmic energy production takes time.”

He looked at his ministers. “Do you all agree with this assessment?”

They all bowed their heads.

“Very well, if you can no longer increase the prosperity of this village, then it is time to appoint a Minister of War.”

My head jerked around, and I stared at him. “My prince?”

“Chancellor Fang, appoint a Minister of War. We will begin attacking nearby settlements and pillaging their resources.”

Without saying another word, he turned and left the room.

I didn’t know what to do. I looked at the Minister of Rites.

“Can you explain the situation to me?”

The minister bowed his head. “While the empire doesn’t explicitly encourage war among its cities, it is an accepted practice for boosting a Ruler’s karmic energy. With a Minister of War, we will attack others, and we will be attacked in return. When we bring back spoils, the prince will gain an energy boost from it. When our lands are destroyed, he will get a boost from repairing them. I do not have a complete understanding of the principles behind the practice, but I can say that war is considered a valuable tool for boosting karmic energy.”

I closed my eyes. It might help the prince, but how would it affect the lives of his people?

“Alright,” I took a deep breath, “if we are going to do this, we need to be smart about it. Let’s ensure we take as little damage as possible.”

---------------------------------------------------

Ju DaoRong was appointed as Minister of War. He was a Martial Lord that had served as the prince’s personal bodyguard. With the prince’s advancement to Lord, Ju DaoRong was now able to spend time on other assignments.

Once the appointment was made, the prince began a bloody crusade against the surrounding towns and villages. Slowly, he worked his way up to attacking small cities.

I did my best to guide these attacks, trying to minimize the damage they caused, but my efforts were futile. The prince wanted destruction. That was the quickest route to more energy for himself.

With the boost he was receiving from pillaging the empire, the prince quickly rose through the Lord realm and hit Peak Lord in only 12 years. However, that was where he was blocked. Without a kingdom, he couldn’t advance any further.

The council was gathered in the prince’s throne room when he laid out his next plan. He had servants bring out a large table and he spread a map on it for use to see.

“Minister Ju, you have done an excellent job as Minister of War, but now it is time for your real test. I mean to forge a new kingdom.”

I quickly sucked in a breath.

“My prince—” I began but was cut off.

“This is a map of the surrounding kingdoms. If we slowly absorb the marked cities, we should be able to gather enough of a population to forge a new kingdom.”

“My prince, if we do this, we will be facing Martial Kings on the battlefield.”

The prince nodded. “Minister Ju, select a group to be raised to Martial Lord. Then, I want to begin working to raise you and your most promising subordinates all the way to False King. That will allow us to hold off any enemy Kings. We don’t need to be able to defeat them right now, we just need to be strong enough that they don’t want to attack us directly.”

We followed the prince’s plans. We assembled our armies and marched to war to forge a new kingdom.

At first, it worked. Kings were reticent to spend too much effort defending small border cities, but the more the prince’s nascent kingdom grew, the stronger the opposition we faced.

Every day, I had to read reports of the toll his war was taking on our population. Every day, I regretted that I didn’t step in to stop him from this madness.

I didn’t know how it would all end, but I expected it to be with the prince’s execution. His war had angered several powerful Kings, and once we were defeated, I doubted any of his council would survive the aftermath.

That was when something happened that had the power to change the entire course of the war.

A messenger arrived from the imperial capital. The Du Clan ancestor, Du XiongMing, was nearing the end of his life, and all direct descendants were required to return.

---------------------------------------------------

The prince assembled his entire cabinet to discuss the situation.

“This is our opportunity,” he said, fervor blazing in his eyes. “The old ancestor’s death is the solution to all of our problems.”

I could tell that the prince’s words made the entire room uneasy, but everyone did their best to hide their reactions.

“The empire relies on the old ancestor for its protection. I learned as a child that he has a powerful object in his possession that can determine the fate of the entire dynasty. If I take control of it when he dies, there can be no question of my ascension to Emperor.”

I looked at the ministers and saw that none of them were excited. Everyone was simply afraid.

“My prince,” I said, deciding to be the one to voice everyone’s concerns. “Even if that is the case, it will be difficult to acquire such an item. If it is so important, the Emperor will surely seize it before anyone else has a chance.”

When the prince looked at me, I saw a cunning glint in his eyes that frightened me.

“That is where you come in, Chancellor Fang. The old fool is a formation specialist. Stealing anything from him directly is suicide. We need to take it from his corpse. The imperial family has already agreed to a truce. No one is allowed in the room with the ancestor when he dies in order to prevent an immediate battle from breaking out between the different factions within the clan. However, since you are only a Martial Master 1, and you were trained as a servant, I will convince my family to let you serve the ancestor in his final moments. When he dies, steal his treasure, and bring it to me.”

“Will the others agree to this?” I asked.

“If they don’t, then I will make them,” the prince responded, gnashing his teeth.

If it's not relevant to the story to the point that it's forgotten, why is it even there to begin with? In the first chapter we learn that he's got a strong connection to his sister and that leads to him being in the reincarnation loop he is in. If that's gonna be important later then maybe it should have more of a pressence in the story? We're over a hundred chapters in and we've got nothing so far. I'm not saying it's bad or good, all I'm saying is that if it's important to the story then maybe we should see more about it and if it isn't important then it's a quick edit to make honestly. Same with life 61 and 62. I'm not saying it's good or bad, I'm saying I thought it was very unenjoyable to read. Having read the end of the volume now I think it all worked out in the end, however I still think it might be a good idea to look over those two lives and maybe streamline a little, maybe some comic relief? I don't know but those chapters were very hard to read and it was very jarring after the rest of the story.

I agree with you on life 60 ending and life 61 though I'm not as pissed of about life 61 as you seem to be... I think you are way off about the "he's supposed to be a guy from earth" though. He lived 600 years and how many of those on earth pray tell? Would be very strange and stupid if that was a major part of his identity still and not just something that shines through sometimes when the situation is appropriate. Also you need to remember that before this life he always had the mental influences of his cultivation to contend with which likely also made any impact his life on earth could have had much reduced! Now finally that he gets the spacial seed by fate and luck and not planning and hard work is so fucking appropriate I think! It's still a xianxia so some random heaven-defying luck ought to happen once in a blue moon to the protagonist lol.

Gopard

Thanks for the chapter!

Gopard

Yes, it is a stupid plan from the prince, very much in line with his compromised mind. But it may actually work because of other reasons: I assume the MC is to weak, so stealing the item (absorbing the seed) would instantly kill him. So the others would considere him a non threat. Who cares whose body they take the seed from.

Jeff091

I just finished bingeing this and I have mixed thoughts. Imo, the story peaked at life 60. That life had the most interesting start, the best side characters so far and the most colour. It also had the best drama, noise, turbulence, whatever you want to call the small problems that comes along in the MC's path that he needs to solve. 60 was also the life with the most agency, it was exciting! Finally we're gonna leave the wastes and see what the real world is like- and he's dead. Out of nowhere, never explained. Maybe the rising sun bastard did it? Who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Then in 61 we get a zombie that morphs into young master templet D. It seems the MC is as annoyed about the random assassination as I was and goes on full tilt. He's now upside down and hands off the reins to one of his friends while he just slowly turns into shit lord. Mei does her best with what she has, which is not even 30 years of life experience and her blessing. Regardless, our boy goes along and mostly just spends time cultivating and doing alchemy stuff, becoming more and more self absorbed and entitled. Eventually he gets paranoid about Mei's blessing and uses his blessing to try to have a conversation with the real Mei since he's now convinced himself that the girl is just a skin suit piloted by her blessing. The conversation doesn't go well, he gets to add zero emptathy to his suit of traits and basically just stops being a person. Now I get that him being a tool, treating everyone else like their tools is supposed to be a side effect of his cultivation, it's very clever. Didn't make it any more enjoying to slog through it all though. Obviously Mei having witnessed her friend (and maybe love?) turn into the worst kind of guy and slowly spirals until she can't take it anymore. At this point I'm just waiting for Suck Fan to die so he can get some clarity and realize what a giant cunt he's been and maybe learn something. Not expecting him to run off and make Mei his queen, dedicate his life to her or some such, getting some prespective makes sense at this point. However while he realizes that he's always been a bit of a tool treating other people like tools his non-addled brain is still convinced that Mei blessing is the real MC and it's still trying to manipulate him. By torturing mei and making her kill herself. :| Needless to say, I wasn't very impressed by his insight from a shitty life, not really lived. Aha! But he's got wicked soul damage from being a douchebag about his friend killing herself! His 600+ year old soul is now in tatters and he can't even think her name... Man if only he'd had a stronger soul able to deal with hardship and emotional trauma? Whatever, his wounded soul is just glossed over, no idea what kind of impact it might have. Oh well, on to the next one, maybe he'll actually try to grow and maybe make some real friends? No. He goes to a city, finds a genuinely nice person who's well disposed towards him. Does he decide to become a kindly local small time potion maker to help out his community in small ways? Does he decide to get a true mortal experience and not even touch cultivation, instead taking up a mortal trade and trying to find meaning in a simple life? Perhaps muse on the deeper meanings of what makes humans tick? Lol no. In 62 he's more a child than ever. Which is stange because up until this point I don't think he's even acted all that much like a teenager, even in the beginning of the story. Almost feels like he forgot he's supposed to be from earth or that he has a sister from that first life time.. So he fucks off to be a chump in the palace and his plan is just.. hang around and be a slave? Well he's good with simple plans. Fucking decades pass and he's so good at pretending to be a slave that he might as well be one. Until he meets his own young master and now it's time to unpark the car and get back on the road. But we can't drive too fast because... Because! So he helps the little shit but only a little. Not enough to prevent him from becoming an increadibly tropey xianxia protagonist. (Youngest son, born with a blessing that is secretly super strong but appears weak at first, swears he will seal the heavens and prove himself above his siblings and make his father pride! AND NOTHING WILL STAND IN HIS WAY!) We could have had a nice mini arc here, maybe. The MC could have made certain the young master had perfect cultivation aids and once away on their own he could have dispersed his shitty meridians and jumped up in cultivation and really supported the little shit in his quest for xianxia mediocrity. But he doesn't. Because of course not. Now the arc is about to end and the MC is going to stumble into getting his biggest goal, thrown at him by fate instead of through his own hard work. So yeah I have mixed feelings, but there sure are a lot of feelings. tl;dr Good start of the story, life 60 ending gave me whiplash. 61 and 62 were torture to read. The MC is supposed to be a guy from earth but that seems mostly forgotten by now. I hope the next couple of lifes are enjoyable to read I guess I'll wait a week or two and see but 61 and 62 really sucked.

L Pedersen

He needs to cultivate the earth rank cultivation technique to redo his multi element cultivation manual from the ground up. Once he has the seed and does that it’s time to look for a Tri element cultivation manual.

Brandon Terry

He gets the space seed what does he do then? Like at that point it is just train up his hammer space until he can start throwing all kinds of shit into his space that let's him move through the ranks easy. A bunch of perfect rank 0 pills, perfect rank 1-4 to start. Make his growth crazy explosive if needed. So next should be to go onto a herbalist sect or beast master sect to learn from them. Get the cultivation techs he needs for the dual elements he does not have, then start experimenting

Frardowin

This feels so random, but also so real. It's perfect. It's a coincidence that would actually happen but you never expect it to.

Moon Winchester

My math was a bit off more like 19 years.

Aaron Johnson

The emperor who is dying. Things appear to have taken the right turn for MC to get it (I think this is correct)

Tommy

huh, what started as a life to need to put as little effort as possible has turned into one that needs tons of effort+directly effects his long term goals. i kinda like it but also wouldv appreciated a few in-between lives to be sort of disconnected from each-other and not fully dependent on moving forward the plot rather focused on character growth-which i thought would be from this life.

Amazon Shopper

And so his one long quest slowly comes to an end. I wonder what he will do next. He could learn to become an array grandmaster as well as a growing grandmaster, as well as to try to discover the beast cultvation system and how to make pills for them. Another possible quest could be to create a heaven grade 4 elemental cultivation technique.

Hans

So what, the people who are so incredibly paranoid that they have royalty personally put on elaborate plays to check the responses of each and every servant are going to allow this person to transfer in at the last minute with very clearly compromised intentions at a massively sensitive time? Got to call BS on that, not a single chance in hell they would allow that with there previously shown extreme security measures.

Joseph

So is my math off or will he be his servant for 40-50 years? Maybe he can get some good training in formations though limited with Fangs low cultivation. Maybe even get to the Du library as he didn't get into the emperors.

Aaron Johnson

Honestly at this point I’m so in love with this story that any chapter ending to me is cliffhanger

Mohammed khaled

Also I hate you why did you. Your story is great and you have reached imperial level in cliffhanging XD jk.

Mohammed khaled

I forgot who’s the one with the spatial seed

Mohammed khaled

That’s very.. convenient

Tyler Gibbs

Wow this feels almost to convenient!

Sammot

this feels so random love it

GeneralDuck

so he get the Spatial Seed stored it and does suicide Mission accomplish. lol

Nobody is perfect

lmao this might really be the timeline where he gets the seed

DrSubterfuge

It is very convenient (and unexpected) how he will have access to the spatial fire seed this life if the plan works. At least, he learned blessings instructions can be ignored and the importance to be involved in city management.
