------------------------------------------

I woke up in my small shack in the Su Clan.

I took a deep breath and examined my soul.

It wasn’t completely healed from my past trauma, but it was on the mend. There were still frayed edges, but it no longer looked like the slightest breeze could tear it apart.

Sitting deep in the middle of my soul, a spatial spirit fire seed of the deepest black waited for me.

I looked at the seed, and my mind drifted to everything I had been through to get it.

What had the System told me at the start of all of this? ‘If you are present in the capital of the Brilliant Sun Empire at the time of his death, and you have a connection with its ruling dynasty, it may be possible for you to claim this seed as your own upon his death.

It didn’t say I needed to become a Pill King. It didn’t say I didn’t say I should master formations. All I was supposed to do was forge a connection. That was all I was supposed to do.

Instead, I had wanted it, needed it, so much that I put all my effort into obtaining it. I drove myself to madness and Mei to suicide. I couldn’t let that happen again. I had to find a way to be better.

It would have been easy to simply blame everything on my cultivation technique. Having a technique that dedicated me so much to a singular goal was far more dangerous than I had anticipated, and it was an easy scapegoat. However, I knew that wasn’t the whole story.

I had chosen my path. I chose to be focused on that goal even before I started cultivating.

My thoughts drifted to Prince CaoHan. His cultivation technique drove him to his own version of madness, starting a war that would destroy everything he relied on. Was that only his technique’s fault? The prince had dedicated himself to that path before I even met him. His desire to rise above his position as a castoff scion had led him to make choices that were clearly against his best interest.

And I had just stood by and let him do it…

I switched tracks. The Formation Emperor Du XiongMing wasn’t any better. I didn’t know how his cultivation technique influenced him, but his goal of ascending to Sovereign had destroyed something he felt was precious.

Could I continue to simply blame cultivation techniques for this?

They were a factor, yes, and they seemed to only make bad situations worse, but there had to be a way to gain mastery over them. Long ago, the System had implied that the mental influences from cultivation techniques were a desire of the Heavenly Dao. Did the Dao simply force them onto cultivators to be cruel or was there a path forward that I couldn’t see?

I sighed. These were questions I couldn’t answer. I didn’t need to though.

I just needed to know one thing: What was I going to do?

I needed balance. I didn’t know how I would achieve it, and I had no idea what it would look like, but I needed to find some kind of balance in my life.

Set a goal, ‘get the seed’, but at all times, remain balanced.

I must not allow my goal to be the only thing I am living for.

With or without cultivation-induced madness, balance would always be key.

I breathed in and out, centering myself. A small smile appeared on my face.

I needed balance, but that also meant I needed to acknowledge my wins, not just my losses. I had been able to achieve my goal, and that was still worth celebrating.

I could finally begin to proceed with what was important to me beyond anything else. I could begin to build a world beyond the horrors of the Heavenly and Earthly Daos, beyond the madness of cultivators, and beyond the nightmare of an eternal, unending time loop.

I could finally build something that would last. Something that was permanent. Something that was real.

It would take me time to learn how, but now I had the tools I needed to get started.

With the necessity of acquiring the fire seed behind me, I felt free. Free to go anywhere and do anything I wanted. There were many paths I could go down, and there were many debts I needed to repay, but everything would come in its due course.

Where did I want to go next?

I tried to make a plan, but I suddenly realized I wasn’t sure what my affinities were like. It had been so long, and my memory of some things was starting to fade.

I could have bought something like SuYin’s perfect memory from the System, but no, that was a road to hell. My journal was my permanent memory. It stored everything I needed to remember. Everything else could be allowed to fade.

Still, it would be nice if I had easier access to knowledge of past purchases.

“System, I would like you to change the information I receive when I die to include information about any affinities and aptitudes I’ve purchased. Include their permanent levels as well as any temporary boosts that remain in effect.”

Improve Status Notification. Cost 100 credits.

I laughed. The System needed to get its pound of flesh. “Confirm.”

Purchase confirmed. 125,761,675 credits remaining.

I waited.

I slapped my forehead. Of course, I wouldn’t instantly get the information. That wasn’t what I had purchased.

“System, give me that status notification now.”

Status Notification. Cost 10 credits.

I shook my head. It was a meaningless cost, but still, no reason to waste good coin. I might as well do something I hadn’t done in a long time, just for old times’ sake.

I exited my shack and went to the large red door that kept us from leaving the training area.

I pulled on it with all my strength.

I had forgotten how hard it was to move. My best efforts only barely budged it.

The door was yanked open, and the guard on the other side glared at me.

“What are you doing? No one is allowed out,” he said, glaring at me.

I punched him in the face.

He punched me in the chest.

You have died. Calculating…

You died as a Martial Disciple 1. 10 credits awarded.

End of Volume 2.

----------------------------------------

Author's Note:

Thank you all for joining me through volume 2. I know it wasn't what many of you expected out of a xianxia/time loop story, but it was what I felt I needed to tell.

My original idea for this final life were he gets the seed was a big operation where he puts together everything he learned and able to achieve something great. After I wrote chapters 100-102, though, I realized I couldn't do that. It would be rewarding all of Su Fang's bad decisions. I needed him to see that he was walking down the wrong path.

That said, volume 3 will be starting Monday, and I think it will be more of what people are expecting: increasing power, time loop shenanigans, and more action. Lessons have begun to be learned, and it will take time for them to fully sink in, but Fang now has a chance to get on the right track forward.

I hope you stick around to see what's next.

Comments

My understanding is that the seed gives him (potential) power over spatial things of which the storage space is one.

Jonathan

Also had the thought. it be nice to see Feng explore some alternative paths like the Su clan and their place in all of this. It would also be a good place to learn combat while also showing his growth since he failed so much there.

Chris Mantakounis

I was using 'body' incorrectly there good catch. My point still stands though. If the seed is meant to expand the storage space shouldn't it be in the storage space rather than his spirit?

Chris Mantakounis

The seed isn't in his body, but his soul. Fire seeds are never stored in thr body, but since the body and soul overlap, it's easy to misunderstand at times.

Theboy Inblue

Also, another thing that I never quite understood was why does he need the seed inside of his body if he's going to use it to expand his inventory space. Shouldn't he want it to go inside of the spirit space instead of the cold fire one? Might want address that in the upcoming chapters when describing how this whole thing works.

Chris Mantakounis

I hope this emperor gets his chance to shine in the light again. He's an interesting character, but mostly because he didn't agree to Fang's idea but I think that's only because death was so imminent. I also think it would be very interesting to see if the prophecies and such about the fire seed immediately shift off of him. The moment the restart starts. People might not be clamoring for it because it's no longer the only way to exit this continent. Or at least if I'm interpreting the message correctly that it's a path that fang can smuggle people through which is there for their exit. Either way interesting.

Chris Mantakounis

Yes! I'm really excited for Vol 3. I binged both volumes and I can't wait for more. I hope Fang clears his debts and reaches immortality. I'm really looking forward to him trying that Peak-Earth Earth cultivation manual and his journey to collect all the best manuals on the continent so that he can make the best one for himself. I'm also looking forward to him learning the secret connection between Beasts and Pills( 9 million is chump change to him) and why Refining and Wind cultivation is so rare. I hope he takes Mei and SuYin with him on his journey to the top, but treats them right. I wonder if purchases can be refunded, and what its like living a life with only 1 affinity and any of the secondary affinities. He can maybe purchase information on the most common mistakes people make that lead to their death from the System and avoid them? I'm just bursting with curiosity on how this story will go! Thanks Author.

Michael

Thanks for the chapter!

Gopard

We only know of extinct creatures because of the fossile record but fossilization is very rare. It is very likely that there are creatures that never fossilized or that we haven't found any fossiles of. How is that different from never having existed? How would we know? Unless his children all share his drive and talent he'd outlive his kids anyway since he's shooting for the top. I just don't understand the reluctance, what is the functional emotional difference here? regardless of if someone dies and leaves a corpse or if they cease to be, he'll still remember them and that's what would be important to a father/husband. Besides, he's gonna have a giant soul storage space someday, he can keep physical mementos if he wants. Death and family are both very imprortant parts of life, it just seems like such a huge things to skip. Even if he doesn't have kids of his own and never marries, is he always going to remain apart from people? Will he never take disciples of his own? No adopted family?

Death is one thing. Death is natural. But how would you feel knowing your kids never existed? It's like Wandavision. He creates kids, then they just disappear, never having existed.

Greg Tolley

I've always thought it would be a good idea to let him go off and be a low to the ground cultivator somewhere rural, letting him connect to normal people. It would also be a great tool for world building and showcasing different parts of the continents they're on. Another thing, while I don't especially want romance to be a big part of the story I'd love it if Su Fang would allow himself to live life. Getting married and having kids is a part of that. I don't think that his family dying should hold him back from that, everybody dies eventually and as long as he's alive he'll remember his loved ones.

L Pedersen

Still think it's important to make such lives enjoyable to read but I agree that this chapter was a nice ending to it all.

L Pedersen

I think fang needs some kind of hobby outside of cultivation topics. Like becoming a gourmand and searching for the best foods everywhere. Or board games like the old guys on the street in this volume. Just something inconsequential to cultivation, that he can become an absolute master in something that doesn't matter to cultivators. I feel like if he truly enjoys something and always tries to find more about such a hobby thoughtout loops as a side project to whatever he is doing as his main thing at the time, it will help him keep balanced.

Sammot

I think volume 2 was great and the way he acquired the space seed aswell

Epeen

thank you

Morog T Tiny

this is exactly how i always imagined a normal person inside of a time loop story would behave. It should take sweat, time and effort to make peace with the madness of a time loop and this is exactly the perfect epilogue for that. Brilliantly done!

Alfredo Spuri

I liked the ending of this volume a lot. With how character focused the story has felt so far I think this was a better way to do it than to have him succeed in some big improbable scheme against people way stronger than him.

Ian Chin

It is. I added a couple words to clarify. It is still a 'spirit fire seed', but with the element of space.

Greg Tolley

I thought the seed the emperor had was space based as it was intended to increase his storage space.

Morog T Tiny

I'm excited to see his new interaction with Mei when she meets him and her power doesn't work on him.

Derrick McDowell

thanks for the chapter. Kinda glad these lives are behind us, but I think they were useful from a storytelling perspective. Excited to see where we go next!

joey

Thanks for the chapters <3 I loved it tbh. Can't wait to see where you take it.
