White Lady

In my Slavic Demonology series, while describing Skarbnik I mentioned a creature called White Lady or Bielinka. She was seen in the mines (especially salt mines) or caves. Today I wanted to tell you more about her.

The mining world has, for centuries, been above all a male domain. And yet, almost out of defiance, the greatest fear in this masculinized reality was inspired by a woman – the White Lady, the Lady of the Mine, Bielinka. She embodied the deepest fears and personified the dangers lurking underground. Doing harm seemed to be written into her demonic nature, as she caused trouble without any clear reason – simply, it seems, for her own pleasure.

No wonder miners avoided places where they believed she might appear, even occasionally. And there was good reason to be afraid, for the White Lady often asked for help or a favor—requests that usually involved breaking mining regulations, leading to death or injury. She pretended to be a fragile lady in distress, which wasn’t hard, as she belonged to the ranks of particularly beautiful demons. She tempted with promises of wealth. But anyone who gave in was doomed.

The White Lady would transform into a block of salt, hoping to crush some unfortunate soul or drag him down to the bottom of a forgotten mine shaft. Bielinka was both cunning and powerful—but not invincible. This infernal demon trembled before the cross, a prayer, or the name of a holy patron saint.

I really hope you enjoyed this set. It was probably the scariest photoshoot in my life. This place is really old and is far away in forest. I was affraid I might walk on someone there because I saw many drawings, broken bottles etc. Luckily I was able to take some photos alone and safe.

Love, Erinthul.

Thank you! Number one was also my favourite until I edited #7 😄

I, too, am happy you remained safe. If it looks spooky in a photo, I can only imagine it in person. This is a beautiful set of images. I love the long blonde hair. It looks fantastic and fills the scene in these photos. If I were to choose a favourite, I'd say #1 and #4—not to take away from the rest. Oh, I love your eyes in this set. They really draw you into the scene you described.

This is a beautiful series of shots. I love the lighting and how you brought the story to life. The fourth image I think exudes such power, it feels commanding to me. I’m sorry it was so scary to make. I’m glad you were safe.

Thank you so much!

stunning, awesome and beautiful. To fall under the spell of such a noble goddess is a miner's wish. I take a pickaxe and make for the mine...
