The ‘Metrons’ provided the universal translator so Kirk and Gorn Capt could communicate….

We lost multiple redshirts in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?"
The redshirt in this episode is called O'Herlihy according to Memory Alpha. Sometimes Shatner has creative pronunciations for his crewmen's names, such as Mr. Kyle.

The devices that Kirk and the Gorn captain were provided by the Metrons were recorder/translators, so each could understand the other.
One thing I had never noticed before is that Kirk is wearing different boots on the surface of the asteroid. Looks like a lace-up boot with black socks instead of the normal pointed boots he wears on the ship. It never showed up in standard def, but the remasters allow for all sorts of new details to emerge.
Thanks for a great reaction, Bunny!

Oh, does he play that injured survivor in Arena?

You may know this but the actor who played Mr. DePaul (
Sean Kenney) in this episode and who was sitting next to Mr. Sulu was the same actor who played the injured Capt. Pike in the two part episode the Menagerie. He looked like Jeffrey Hunter so he was hired for the part. According to Gene Roddenberry, he said the actor was such a good sport about the makeup in the Menagerie that Roddenberry put him in two other episodes, one was "Arena" and the other "A Taste of Armageddon".

Correct, in the Original Series Warp 6 was the normal top speed, and warp 8 could be done for short bits. In later shows (which happened later on when tech had improved) Warp 8 was the normal top speed, with warp 9 being possible for a short time.
You also have some fantastical and out of place mentions of even higher warp speeds (both in the original shows and later shows) but we'll get to that when we get there. LOL

I think the the term "Condition Alert" was used in a previous episode...maybe Balance Of Terror. Ah yes... the concept of a Red Alert was mentioned in Court Martial; the premise being that Kirk (supposedly) jettisoned the pod before declaring Red Alert.

The literal meaning of "conn" is "control" as in "you have control of the ship." Typically the senior bridge officer takes control of the ship. That may or may not be the senior officer on the ship. Scotty does indeed out rank Sulu, but Scotty's bailiwick is in engineering...keeping the engines running.

The place where it was filmed is certainly the most iconic. I remember seeing it again in the Jay and Silent Bob movie. I also recognized it in the "Shore Leave" episode. It was a convenient place back in the '60s for Hollywood to film when they wanted to do something outdoors.

hmmmm... you mentioned "Squire Of Gothos," yet I don't see that episode in your feed. Guess you haven't uploaded it yet. Are we still going in production order?

As I understand it, the highest warp level is Warp 9.9999999999999999. In other words, Warp 10+ is faster than light in warped space. if you go faster than light you will be going backward in time. For the record in Star Trek The Next Generation, their warp factor was not the same as The Original Series.

OH NO!!! There it was...The first Red Shirt to die. The man that started the meme. Unfortunately, I couldn't catch his name... it was either Early, or Earlahe. The Paramount Closed Caption says his name was "O'Herlihy" but CC has been known to be wrong. Alas. Poor Ensign Early...May you live forever in memes; you certainly did not in Star Trek.

This has always been one of my favorite episodes. Not top 10, but top 20 for me. You get the introduction of another race (though sadly the Gorn are not used much in later shows), some very nice action scenes, and some tense moments.
This is also the first episode in which the following things are used:
1) Use of the word Federation
2) Seeing both phasers and photon torpedo's in action with clear effects for each
3) I BELIEVE this is the first time we hear the term Red Alert.
It's also fitting you released this on Thanksgiving with the talk of a dinner and all that. :)

Three things:
The voice of the Gorn was Ted Cassidy, who played Rok, in "What are Little Girls Made of"
This episode was filmed at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, in Los Angeles County. You will see it again in future episodes as various alien planets. It was also a popular shooting location for Westerns many years ago.
There was a video game comercial ten years ago that was a parody of this episode featuring Shatner and a Gorn. It was a tie in to the newest Star Trek movies. It's hilarious.

You asked "who is in charge" when the captain is off the ship. This can have multiple answers, depending on what orders have been given and the situation aboard ship. Usually when the captain leaves the bridge he'll say "Sulu, you have the conn" or someone else of command rank on the bridge. he doesn't have to take the center seat, it just means "you have responsibility for the ship while I am gone". This can leave Spock and Scotty (second and third in command) free to do other things. When Spock and Kirk are off the ship, Scotty has command, but someone almost always has the conn because Scotty probably needs to be in engineering for some reason, although you'll see Scotty on the bridge when he's in command because he can see his engineering console from the chair. In this episode, Scotty probably just went to engineering after managing the transport to the ground, when red alert was called, as Sulu had the conn and was authorized to take whatever action he saw necessary to protect the ship. (This is a common thread in starship operations, you will see. For everyone, your first duty is to the ship, and this is explored GLORIOUSLY in later episodes.)

Fuck yes. Probably one of my favourites, and one of the most iconic episodes in the entire STU. I'm sure I'll be back with commentary after I'm able to check it out👍
