A bit late to the party but wanted to mention it anyway, spoiler warning? in case my prediction ends up being right but... that word choice you use at the beginning, apoptosis? Thats...definitely intentional right? The funny thing about apoptosis, compared to say necrosis, both involve cellular death, but apoptosis is where the cell is programmed to die, its referred to oftentimes as programmed cell death. This can happen for a number of reasons, either the cell realizes its beyond saving and/or a threat to those around (e.g. overtaken by viral parasites) and starts the sequence itself, or an immune cell comes along and recognizes the cell is dangerous and starts a cascade of reactions in that cell that causes it to die. Its like, your bodies version of a self destruct sequence for cells basically. I dont know if this has already been alluded to but, what if B died because they refused to live under someone else's thumb? And the research institute was providing them with a compound that sustains there cells, and without it, their cells are genetically engineered... to apoptose (to self destruct)? Thats.... brilliantly dark, and absolutely fucking brilliant writing and foreshadowing with word choice.
