Chapter 211: Captain of Division 3

Several minutes later, Kaiser and the Captains of the Gotei 13 returned one after another to the Division 1 barracks, once again gathering in the room where the meeting had first taken place.

Retsu Unohana had also returned. She informed everyone that although Kenpachi Zaraki had been seriously injured, she had already treated his wounds. He was currently resting in the Division 4 barracks.

Once Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto confirmed Kenpachi Zaraki was fine, he no longer concerned himself with the matter. Instead, in front of all the Captains and Kaiser, he announced a decision.

“The Captains of the Gotei 13, myself included, should number thirteen. But as of now, one position remains vacant.”

This statement immediately caused many Captains' expressions to change on the spot.

They already understood what Yamamoto intended to do.

“Since the incident decades ago, we have yet to find a suitable replacement for the Captain of Division 3.”

Yamamoto looked at Kaiser and solemnly declared,

“You shall succeed as the Captain of Division 3, Kaiser.”

The moment these words left his mouth, the room fell into an eerie silence.

“Succeed as a Captain?”

Even Kaiser was stunned. His face—which hadn’t shown a trace of hesitation even while clashing with Kenpachi Zaraki—now bore clear astonishment.

A Captain—without a doubt, this represented the pinnacle of status, authority, and strength within the Gotei 13.

If Shinigamis were the upper class of Soul Society, then Captains were the upper class of the upper class. Even the Nobles residing in Seireitei wouldn’t dare look down on a Captain—they had to show proper respect.

And now, Yamamoto intended to directly promote a Shin’ō Academy student who had only studied for half a year and had no official squad service into a Captain?

How was that anything less than letting Kaiser leap directly to the heavens?

“Captain Commander.”

Suì-Fēng was the first to furrow her brows and speak up.

“Isn’t this far too irregular?”

Normally, to serve as a Captain or Lieutenant of the Gotei 13, one had to possess a certain level of squad service experience.

Kenpachi Zaraki becoming a Captain by defeating the previous Kenpachi was a special case unique to Division 11.

The other twelve squads had no such exceptions. Without sufficient service experience, one generally could not directly become a Captain or Lieutenant.

Of course, that was only under normal circumstances—it wasn’t impossible for exceptions to exist.

In cases where high-level combat strength in the Gotei 13 was severely lacking, or if a Shinigami of significant reputation had for some reason not joined earlier but was later recruited, such individuals could potentially be fast-tracked into Captaincy.

But the Gotei 13 was clearly not currently in a state of emergency. So to become a Captain now, one had to follow one of three paths:

First, pass the Captain’s proficiency exam under the witness of three existing Captains, including the Captain Commander.

Second, be recommended by six Captains and gain the approval of at least three others from the remaining six.

Third, under the witness of two hundred squad members from the target squad, defeat the current Captain in combat.

This was the normal process for becoming a Captain—except for the Captain of Division 1, who also served as the Captain Commander and had to be appointed by Central 46. All other Captains followed these rules.

Even Kenpachi Zaraki had become Captain through the third method—he had just happened to be unaffiliated before then, not a member of the Gotei 13, which was what made his case unique.

Now Kaiser, who had only studied at Shin’ō Academy for half a year, was to directly become a Captain?

That was undoubtedly unprecedented.

However—

“Kaiser has already proven his strength. And he did so in front of nearly every Captain,” said Yamamoto, his tone resolute. “He defeated the Captain of Division 11, the current Kenpachi, proving that he possesses the qualifications of a Captain-level Shinigami.”

“Since that’s the case, the rules can be simplified.”

“Unless… do any of you believe he is not qualified to be a Captain?”

This rhetorical question left the Captains speechless.

Whether Kaiser was qualified to be a Captain? Of course, he was.

He had defeated the current Captain of Division 11—and with nearly every Captain present. That level of strength no longer required further proof.

And whether it was via the first or second method of appointment, it still required the approval of other Captains or the Captain Commander.

Kaiser had defeated an existing Captain in front of them all. Wasn’t that recognition enough?

Although the third method technically required the presence of two hundred squad members, Kaiser had in truth fulfilled the essence of all three recognized paths to Captaincy.

As for whether a student who’d only studied at Shin’ō Academy for half a year could handle administrative duties?

Did anyone truly believe Kenpachi Zaraki was someone who sat behind a desk doing paperwork?

That man thought of nothing but combat and killing—when had he ever shown aptitude for such responsibilities?

Paperwork and logistics were typically handled by the Lieutenant or Seated Officers. Their very purpose was to support the Captain.

In other words, the only true prerequisite for becoming a Captain was strength. Everything else was secondary—there were always workarounds.

Strength alone could not be substituted or compromised. It was the essential quality of a Captain.

And Kaiser undeniably possessed it.

“And you?” Yamamoto looked toward Kaiser, seeing that no Captains had objected. “Do you have anything to say about this decision?”

Kaiser chuckled, then spoke.

“What could I possibly say? That it’s my honor?”

Becoming a Captain in one step—that was something even Kaiser hadn’t expected.

In his original plan, graduating and being promoted to Lieutenant by some Captain would have already been a strong start.

But now? He was being offered Captaincy directly. What complaint could he possibly have?

Kaiser could already imagine the brilliance this moment would add to his personal history.

Graduating from Shin’ō Academy in half a year—that alone broke records.

Being promoted to Captain immediately after graduation—another record-breaking feat.

Being granted Captain status without showing even Shikai—let alone Bankai—while rare, had precedent in Kenpachi Zaraki, and remained a shocking achievement.

And let’s not forget—in this world, Kaiser had died at the age of seventeen. Even in the afterlife, it hadn’t yet been a full year.

As someone whose total age across both lifetimes was not even eighteen, to become a Captain of the Gotei 13—this would go down in Soul Society’s history.

Among the current Captains of the Gotei 13, who had not lived for centuries?

Even the students of Shin’ō Academy were commonly forty or fifty. It wasn’t unusual to meet Shinigamis over a hundred years old in Seireitei.

Especially Yamamoto—his age dated back over two thousand years, more ancient and venerable than anyone.

Becoming a Captain at under eighteen?

It would be recorded in history and celebrated for millennia.

With achievements like these, how could Kaiser ever worry about his life being dull?

Each record, each milestone, was living proof of an extraordinary existence.

“Very good.”

Yamamoto, seeing Kaiser had no objections, nodded with satisfaction.

“Your inauguration ceremony will be held one month from now.”

And just like that, the matter was decided—and news of it began to spread rapidly.

The announcement that Kaiser would soon be appointed as the Captain of Division 3 was destined to cause a sensation across all of Soul Society.

……

Outside the Division 1 barracks.

By the time Kaiser stepped out, the other Captains had already departed.

Some left without even greeting him. Others exchanged a few polite words with Kaiser before saying goodbye.

Among them, Sōsuke Aizen was the most enthusiastic. He continued walking beside Kaiser, maintaining his ever-gentle smile.

“Though I always knew you would eventually reach this point, I never imagined the day would come so quickly.”

Aizen sounded both genuinely pleased and slightly emotional.

“It’s all thanks to your support, Captain Aizen,” Kaiser replied with a smile, as if he truly meant it. “Perhaps your support is what drew the Captain Commander’s attention and led him to make this decision?”

There was a faint undertone in his words.

“No, this was all your own doing—it has nothing to do with me.” Aizen, seemingly unaware of any implication, shook his head. “You proved your strength in front of all the Captains. That’s the true reason you became a Captain.”

“You even defeated that Kenpachi Zaraki. It seems your strength now surpasses mine.”

“How humbling.”

Hearing that, Kaiser couldn’t help but mock him inwardly.

Beating Kenpachi Zaraki means I’m stronger than you?

You really do know how to play the harmless act.

No one knew better than Kaiser how deep Aizen’s strength went, or how masterfully hidden it was. Anyone who believed these words at face value would suffer immensely later.

So, Kaiser turned to look directly at Aizen.

“Captain Aizen, you shouldn’t sell yourself short,” Kaiser said with a smile. “Why don’t we have a match? See who’s really stronger?”

Kaiser’s words caused the atmosphere to stiffen.

He and Aizen locked eyes. After a moment, Aizen adjusted his glasses.

“Let’s not. My skills really aren’t worth flaunting in front of someone like you,” Aizen said, feigning helplessness. “You’ve seen my Zanpakutō’s release, haven’t you?”

“My Zanpakutō is a water-type. Its ability uses mist and refracted water to confuse enemies, making them fight each other. It’s not exactly powerful—it’s just a diversion, hardly enough to fool a Captain-level Shinigami.”

“You defeated Kenpachi Zaraki without even using Shikai. If it were me, I’d meet the same fate.”

Clearly, Aizen was claiming inferiority.

“Is that so?” Kaiser wasn’t surprised at all. He shrugged. “That’s a shame.”

It really was a shame.

If possible, Kaiser did want to test himself against Aizen.

Of course, he meant the real Aizen—the one who would fight with full strength—not the kind-faced Captain of Division 5 before him.

If he could get a few good cuts in, it would even the score for what happened during the field training.

“Well, there’s always next time.”

Aizen smiled faintly as he spoke—whether or not there was deeper meaning in his words, it was hard to tell.

“You’re right.”

Kaiser responded in kind—making the exchange feel all the more loaded with subtle implications.

At the corner of the path, they finally split—one heading toward Shin’ō Academy, the other toward the Division 5 barracks.

Aizen, still wearing his signature gentle smile, suddenly spoke again.

“Do you think he’s starting to suspect me now, Gin?”

In response, the ever-smiling Gin Ichimaru, who had somehow appeared behind him, replied in his snake-like voice.

“I can’t say for sure if he suspects you, Captain Aizen. But I can say for certain—he doesn’t want to get too close to you. He definitely has his guard up.”

Gin shared his thoughts plainly.

“He really isn’t easy to fool, despite his youth,” Aizen chuckled lightly, not at all surprised. “I originally planned to bring him into Division 5, to make him your replacement, my right hand. But it looks like that’s no longer an option.”

“He’s going to be Captain of Division 3, Gin.”

“I suppose you’ll have to stay by my side a while longer.”

Aizen had originally intended to elevate Gin Ichimaru into the Captain position for Division 3.

But with Kaiser now stepping into that role, that plan had naturally fallen through.

“I don’t mind,” Gin said casually, as if he truly didn’t care. “It’s my honor to remain at Captain Aizen’s side.”

Aizen smiled, said nothing more.

The two of them slowly walked toward the Division 5 barracks, vanishing down the end of the street.

Chapter 212: Return and Early Graduation

Division 4 Barracks, General Relief Station.

This was the designated facility for treating the wounded from other squads.

The overall environment of Division 4's barracks was exceptionally pleasant, and the General Relief Station was designed with patients' mental well-being in mind. It felt more like a retreat than a hospital, providing a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere to aid recovery.

Don't think of this as unnecessary—on the contrary, Division 4’s treatment philosophy placed great emphasis on the state of a patient’s mind and spirit.

This was because a Shinigami’s Reiatsu could recover through rest and treatment. When the body was fully healed, the process of Reiatsu recovery became smoother—and vice versa.

If a Shinigami’s Reiatsu recovered well, it could aid the body’s healing. After all, Reiatsu was the density of the Soul itself—the stronger the Reiatsu, the greater the vitality. And because Reiatsu could surge during spiritual exertion, near-death moments, or heightened emotion, maintaining a positive mental state was undoubtedly beneficial for Reiatsu recovery, and therefore for physical healing.

Based on this principle, Division 4’s healing process typically began with replenishing Reiatsu, followed by repairing physical trauma—at least, that was how Division 4 operated.

In light of that, it was no wonder Division 4’s environment was so idyllic—among all the squads, it was one of the finest. The General Relief Station even used an open design, allowing patients to enjoy scenic views outside at any time.

On this particular day, Renji Abarai, Izuru Kira, and Momo Hinamori were granted permission to leave the hospital.

“After examination, there are no abnormalities in your conditions. Although there were signs that your Soul had been destabilized due to exposure to powerful Hollow forces, after several days of adjustment, your Soul have stabilized,”

A Division 4 member carrying a medical bag checked a medical chart while addressing the three Academy students.

“Congratulations. You may now leave the General Relief Station and return to the Academy.”

Hearing this, Renji, Kira, and Hinamori, as if they had already been informed, bowed solemnly to the Division 4 member.

“Thank you for taking care of us these past few days.”

“We really appreciate it.”

“Thank you very much.”

Their politeness brought a smile to the Division 4 member’s face.

“No need to be so formal—it’s our duty. Anyone who comes here for treatment will be our responsibility. We’ll make sure they recover completely before sending them off.”

He spoke with genuine emotion.

“To be honest, you all just had really bad luck. Still first-years, and you had to go through something that intense. Especially you three—coming face to face with an Adjuchas-level Hollow. Your Soul nearly destabilized completely. It really was a calamity you didn’t deserve.”

Adjuchas-class Hollows were the kind that could trouble even Lieutenants. Some even required the full effort of Captains to defeat. To encounter such a Hollow as students—before even becoming official squad members—was a catastrophe. Even if the target wasn’t them specifically.

It must be remembered: when the Reiatsu gap between individuals was too great, those with weaker Reiatsu could die instantly, unable to withstand the spiritual pressure—scattered and destroyed.

The Reiatsu of an Adjuchas-class Hollow was already enough to kill students on the spot. Even though that one had hidden its Reiatsu, the residual pressure during combat was still terrifying for Academy students.

That was why the Soul of the three had become unstable, necessitating days of recovery under Division 4's care.

Others who had been injured were already treated and discharged.

In contrast, Renji and the others—despite having no visible injuries—had to stay longer than the wounded, which could definitely be seen as unlucky.

But the three of them, having been through what they had, didn’t think that way.

“Just being alive already feels lucky. A little hospital stay is nothing.”

Izuru Kira gave a wry smile, prompting Renji and Hinamori to nod.

“True. To survive an encounter with an Adjuchas-class Hollow—that’s already incredibly lucky. Can’t ask for more,” the Division 4 member praised with a grin. “It’s good you think that way. I was worried this experience might leave you with psychological trauma.”

“Come to think of it, to have your Soul destabilized but not collapse entirely under that kind of pressure—it proves you’re all exceptional.”

“I believe you’ll go far. So... how about joining Division 4 after graduation?”

Renji and Hinamori merely smiled at that, but Kira looked a little tempted—he seemed to seriously consider it.

“Oh, and that upperclassman of yours—the one recruited early by the Gotei 13—he left yesterday. He asked me to pass along a message: Don’t overthink it. Just do what you’re capable of, and someday, you’ll meet again in the Gotei 13.”

After relaying the message, the Division 4 member left, allowing Renji and the others to depart the General Relief Station as well.

On the way out, they passed a room surrounded by quite a few Shinigamis—most of them seemed to be from Division 11, which caught Renji’s attention.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t gather any details—only that an important member of Division 11 was being treated there, which was why so many had come to visit.

Several minutes later, the three left the Division 4 barracks and stepped outside.

“Finally out,” Renji stretched and grumbled. “Didn’t even get injured, but had to be hospitalized. I’m starting to rust.”

“I wonder how the others are doing,” Hinamori asked worriedly. “Did everyone make it back safely?”

“...I heard there were some casualties this time,” Kira said heavily. “Not just sixth-years—even first-years.”

At that, their mood sank.

Recalling the events from a few days ago still felt like a nightmare.

It was supposed to be just a routine field exercise, with Simulated Hollows for training—yet so many massive Hollows had appeared that even official Shinigamis couldn’t handle them, not to mention an Adjuchas-class Hollow showed up. If that wasn’t a nightmare, what was?

“If Kai-kun hadn’t saved us, we probably would’ve…”

Kira didn’t finish the sentence, but Renji and Hinamori understood what he meant.

Especially Hinamori—she thought of the massive Hollow that had descended from the sky, and her face went pale.

If that person hadn’t appeared in time… what would’ve become of her?

She couldn’t even imagine surviving that giant limb raised and swinging down.

That figure who arrived in that moment didn’t just save her life—it saved her soul.

Hinamori felt she might never forget that silhouette.

“...I wonder how Kai-san's doing now.”

When she came back to her senses, she realized she’d said it aloud.

Thankfully, the two beside her didn’t notice her strange expression.

“What could be wrong with him?” Renji curled his lip. “He was in the spotlight this time. Took down an Adjuchas-class Hollow in a single blow. That story must’ve already spread through the Academy—he’s probably being hailed as a hero.”

He didn’t sound jealous—just a little envious.

“Damn, I want to be that strong too.”

Renji kicked a nearby stone.

“Forget it, Renji,” Kira said with a note of self-pity. “Kai-kun's a genius—a genius among geniuses. He’s not from our world. Just being able to see his back is already impressive. There’s no way we can catch up to that kind of strength.”

Those words didn’t dampen Renji’s spirit, but they did cause Hinamori’s gaze to dim.

Just being able to see his back... is already impressive?

It really might be true.

“I don’t care!” Renji snorted. “He might be strong, but he still struggled with me in swordsmanship class. He totally held back on purpose—just to toy with me. I’m gonna get my revenge!”

“...Struggled? You’ve always been the one getting thrashed,” Kira retorted.

“Shut up!” Renji glared. “I’m going to settle things with him—right now!”

With that, he stomped off toward the Academy.

“W-Wait for us!”

Hinamori and Kira were startled and hurried after him, the three of them heading back to the Academy.

However, when they arrived, they found the Academy decorated like a festival—banners everywhere, festive and bright, as if a celebration was underway.

“What’s going on?”

“Looks like they’re celebrating something?”

“Didn’t we just have a major incident? What’s the Academy thinking?”

The three stood in confusion, exchanging glances.

“Renji!”

A slightly frantic voice called out, catching Renji’s attention.

He looked over and saw a carrot-headed girl running toward him.

“Rukia!”

Renji brightened and rushed over.

Then… he saw her leap into the air—like a rocket missile—heading straight for him.

“Bam!”

The carrot-headed rocket hit him square in the gut.

“Gwah!”

Renji’s eyes bulged as he was sent flying, rolling on the ground.

“You idiot!”

Rukia landed steadily, eyes teary with emotion, clearly having hurt herself with the headbutt.

But she didn’t care—she immediately began to berate him.

“I thought you weren’t coming back! That you died out there, you idiot!”

She yelled furiously.

“Ow ow ow…” Renji clutched his stomach and stood, wincing. “Did you have to hit me that hard? You think your skull’s made of iron?”

“It was just a bit of punishment, dumb Renji!” Rukia snapped. “You came back to Soul Society and even got admitted to Division 4—but you didn’t send a single letter!”

“I didn’t even know how to find you to visit! Do you know how worried I was?!”

“Idiot! Fool!”

Rukia was angrier than ever—but Renji didn’t argue this time.

“Sorry, Rukia.”

Renji apologized sincerely, finally calming her anger.

“You look fine now, thank goodness. I was worried for nothing,” Rukia sighed. “I’m glad you made it back safely. Don’t scare me like that again.”

“Yeah, don’t worry. Never again.”

Renji looked more subdued than ever—Kira and Hinamori stared, almost not recognizing him.

Feeling awkward under their gaze, Renji quickly changed the subject.

“By the way, Rukia—what’s going on here?” Renji pointed at the decorated Academy. “Is this to welcome us back safely?”

That’s all he could think of.

But Rukia replied,

“Of course not. It’s to celebrate the graduation of the most outstanding genius in Academy history.”

Her words stunned the three.

“Who?”

“Who’s graduating?”

Kira and Hinamori both looked shocked.

“What? You didn’t know?”

Rukia looked surprised, then delivered the news that left them speechless.

“Kaiser from your class is graduating. He’ll be appointed Captain of Division 3 in one month.”

Chapter 213: We Will Meet at the Summit

The most outstanding genius in the thousand-year history of the Shin'ō Academy was about to graduate, and upon graduation, would directly assume the position of Captain of Division 3 in the Gotei 13, becoming the youngest Captain-level Shinigami in history!

This news had already spread several days ago and, as expected, caused a tremendous uproar.

Countless Shinigamis in Seireitei found it unbelievable, and the Shin'ō Academy itself, after a long period of disbelief, became ecstatic.

After all, this was an Academy student who would graduate and immediately become a Captain—and had only been enrolled for half a year, still officially a first-year student. Without question, this was an achievement worthy of being etched into the Academy’s milestones.

It was akin to someone just graduating from high school, attending university for only half a year, and then suddenly winning a Nobel Prize, skipping straight to graduation and becoming one of the top scientists in the field. For the Academy, this was undoubtedly a great honor. If they didn't throw a massive celebration, that would be the real surprise.

Thus, once the truth of the news was confirmed, the Academy Headmaster waved his hand and summoned everyone to organize a grand event—they had to celebrate this properly.

Thanks to this, the Shin'ō Academy had been incredibly lively these past few days. Many classes were temporarily suspended, and the entire campus was transformed as if it were a festival, festooned with decorations and brimming with celebratory atmosphere.

Kaiser himself was summoned by the Headmaster and the Academy’s top officials, who praised him profusely. They even arranged for interviews and portraits, and someone was assigned to measure his height and weight—reportedly to create a life-sized statue to be permanently displayed on Academy grounds for students to admire and learn from.

They even planned a speech ceremony for Kaiser to attend, but the utterly exhausted Kaiser firmly refused.

"After such a serious incident just occurred, this Academy still has the nerve to hold a celebration? If this were my original world, anyone who tried this would be mobbed online for a lifetime."

Kaiser hid away in a corner, found a tree, and just like when he first entered the Academy, lay on top of it basking in the sun, grumbling internally.

"Looks like death here in the Soul Society isn’t a big deal. A few dead students? Probably normal. Even if a bunch of Shinigamis died, no one would bat an eye. What a dangerous world."

In that regard, it was actually lucky his first experience was in the world of Asterisk.

At least there, people didn’t casually die. Even someone like Dirk who’d been active in the underworld for years didn’t openly try to kill him—just sent someone to cripple him. That had given Kaiser, who wasn’t too strong at the time, a nice transitional start.

If the first world he’d ended up in had been High School DxD or this world, things definitely wouldn’t have gone so smoothly.

"When I get back to that world, I’m going to give that fat bastard a proper beating."

Recalling those past events, Kaiser silently made up his mind.

"Kai!"

Just as Kaiser's thoughts were drifting and his eyes about to close for a nap, a loud voice suddenly called out, startling him awake.

He sat up with a jolt and looked down from the tree—and immediately saw a few familiar faces.

"Renji? Kira? Momo?" Kaiser looked down at them from above, chuckling in surprise. "You’re back?"

The arrivals were none other than Renji Abarai, Izuru Kira, Momo Hinamori, and Rukia Kuchiki.

At some point, they had arrived here and found him. Now they stood beneath the tree, all wearing complex expressions.

"What’s with those faces again?" Kaiser jumped down from the tree and glanced at them, teasing, "You look like I just slashed an Adjuchas in half right in front of you again. Come on, cut it out. It’s getting stale."

At that, they each let out a bitter laugh.

"Kai, you…" Renji looked as though he didn’t know where to start. "You're really graduating without saying a word? And becoming a Captain right after? Isn’t that a bit too sudden?"

Only they knew how shocked and disbelieving they’d felt when they first heard the news.

They had always known Kaiser was a genius, and they were mentally prepared for him to graduate early and be recruited by the Gotei 13—but who could have imagined he would skip all ranks and go straight to the top?

A Captain...

That was the Gotei 13's Captain!

As students of the Shin'ō Academy, their dreams were simply to graduate and join the Gotei 13. Even imagining themselves as Seated Officers felt like a stretch.

But Kaiser?

He was becoming a Captain immediately after graduation—and he’d only studied at the Academy for half a year!

It was incredible—almost too much to believe.

But reality often outdoes imagination.

"Honestly, I didn’t expect it either," Kaiser said with a helpless shrug. "Who’d have thought I’d be graduating after just six months to become a Captain?"

In his original plan, he had never intended to apply for graduation so early.

The Academy did allow early graduation, but even the most talented had always studied for at least a year before joining the Gotei 13.

Take Gin Ichimaru, Lieutenant of Division 5—he was once a well-known genius who graduated after one year and was now capable of becoming a Captain.

If Kaiser hadn’t appeared out of nowhere, this Division 3 Captain seat would likely have gone to Gin.

So Kaiser’s original intention had been to stay for a year, complete the first year, then graduate.

But due to the recent incident, and after exposing his true power, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto had made the decision to have him graduate and take command of Division 3—without delay.

Sometimes, plans just couldn’t keep up with change. His one-year Academy plan had ended halfway.

Graduating after half a year would set a new record in Shin'ō Academy history—one that might never be broken.

"So... Kai-kun is really going to become a Captain of the Gotei 13?"

Izuru Kira asked cautiously, still finding it hard to believe.

"Yes," Kaiser nodded, breaking the illusion of doubt. "In less than a month, my Captain inauguration will be held. Unfortunately, I can’t invite you to attend."

Captain inauguration ceremonies weren’t grand spectacles—just a formal declaration of appointment before the other Captains.

Only Captains would attend, and the venue would be the Division 1 barracks—specifically, the same room they’d previously gathered in. It wasn’t meant to be overly elaborate.

Other than Captains, no one else would be allowed inside—not even Lieutenants.

Needless to say, ordinary Academy students stood no chance of being present.

This clearly showed the rigid hierarchy of the Soul Society—something unmatched by the Human World, at least in modern times.

Even though Kaiser himself didn’t care about such things, bringing a group of students to the inauguration would definitely provoke discontent among the other Captains, who’d see it as disrespectful and improper.

So Renji and the others had little chance of witnessing his inauguration.

"Then..."

Momo Hinamori seemed nervous and excited as she asked,

"Kai-san… you’ll be leaving the Academy soon, right?"

The answer was obvious.

"Yes," Kaiser nodded again, replying in front of them all, "My graduation ceremony preparations are already underway. It’ll likely happen in about half a month."

"Once that’s done, I’ll officially graduate and naturally won’t stay at the Academy anymore."

"Of course, the Headmaster has granted me special permission to reside here until I take office."

In other words, Kaiser’s days at the Academy were numbered.

In less than a month, he’d leave to begin work at Division 3.

From then on, seeing him at the Academy would no longer be possible.

“…”

Momo fell silent.

Renji and the others were the same—wordless and pensive.

“What’s with those faces again?” Kaiser let out a laugh. “It’s not like we’ll never see each other again. Don’t give me that ‘eternal farewell’ look, okay?”

“But when we meet again, you’ll be a Captain of Division 3…” Renji sighed, sounding a bit lost. “A Captain… Even if we graduate, we’ll never be close to you again, right?”

Even someone as blunt as Renji understood how high a Captain stood in the Soul Society.

Right now, they were classmates—students at the same Academy. But next time they met, Kaiser would be a Captain. What would they be?

At most, Seated Officers. Maybe not even that—just regular Squad Members.

The status gap between them would be immense.

Imagine Kaiser walking down the street with his Lieutenant while they mingled among the crowd—clearing a path, bowing low, unable to even meet his eyes. That was the reality.

Just like when Sōsuke Aizen visited with Gin Ichimaru. The entire Academy had lined up to greet them, barely daring to breathe.

One stood at center stage—admired by all.

The others were just faces in the crowd—perhaps even unnoticed.

The difference was enough to sting.

At this, Kira shrank back in silence. Momo’s expression turned gloomy. And Rukia, who barely knew Kaiser, stood quietly to the side, trying not to be noticed.

In that moment, Kaiser’s eyes swept over them—and he smiled.

A calm smile.

“If you can’t see me at graduation, then work hard after graduation to catch up.”

Kaiser suddenly said this.

“Work hard after graduation?”

They froze.

“Do you only want to graduate and become Shinigamis? Have no dreams of reaching the clouds?”

His voice was like a hammer, pounding on their hearts.

“Right now, you’re students. So work hard to graduate and join the Gotei 13. Become full-fledged Shinigamis.”

“Once you’re official Shinigamis, strive to become stronger—to climb higher. Become Seated Officers. Then Lieutenant.”

“And once you’re Lieutenants—how far are you from being Captains?”

His words stirred waves in their hearts.

“Lieutenants…”

Momo murmured.

“That’s…”

Kira looked uncertain.

Renji and Rukia exchanged glances.

“What’s wrong? Think it’s impossible?” Kaiser chuckled. “You’re underestimating yourselves.”

“Trust me—you’re all outstanding. More than any other student at the Academy. Even more than most Shinigamis in the Gotei 13.”

“In my eyes, at the very least, you’ll all become Lieutenants. Some of you becoming Captains wouldn’t surprise me at all.”

“As long as you work hard—in the future, we’ll meet at the summit.”

Kaiser said it decisively, with absolute certainty.

“The future is long, and we’ll still have plenty of time together. Don’t tell me you’re too afraid to chase after my back?”

With those words, Kaiser turned with a smile and walked away—without hesitation, without looking back.

“W-Wait…”

Renji and the others tried to stop him—but he was already gone.

That departing figure, that action, seemed to say this wasn’t goodbye—just a temporary parting.

No need for sorrow. No need for regret. The day they would meet again… might come very soon.

This silent message slowly eased the turmoil in their hearts, transforming it into resolve.

“Lieutenant…”

Momo murmured, staring in the direction Kaiser had left. Her eyes gradually sharpened with determination.

In that moment, they all made a decision—to give it their all.

At the very least… to be able to see the back of that person—

Chapter 214: The Captains Assuming Office Together

Time flew like a white steed glimpsed through a crack, passing swiftly in the blink of an eye.

This was especially true in the Soul Society, where souls frequently lived for hundreds or even thousands of years.

A month's time, in the Soul Society, was incredibly short.

But during this period, Kaiser had already attended his graduation ceremony at the Shin'ō Academy and officially graduated.

The day before the Captain inauguration ceremony, Kaiser left the Shin'ō Academy and headed to the Division 1 barracks.

He did not notify anyone, nor did he say farewell to Renji Abarai and the others. He simply walked away alone in silence, barely carrying any belongings. With only his Zanpakutō at his side, he used Shunpo, carried his blade, and departed freely.

By the time he arrived at Division 1’s barracks, the Division 1 Lieutenant, Chōjirō Sasakibe, was already waiting and led him inside.

However, this time, instead of being taken to the meeting room where the Captains gathered, Kaiser was led to Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto’s personal office.

“Looks like you’re ready,”

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto sat upright before a low wooden table, his ever-present wooden staff resting beside him, and a spread of documents before him, looking like he was attending to official duties.

“More or less.”

Kaiser sat in front of Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto—not in a chair, but directly on the tatami mat, and not even in a formal seiza position, but cross-legged, which made Chōjirō Sasakibe frown.

Kaiser pretended not to notice, continuing to sit cross-legged as he pleased.

He couldn’t help it. He disliked sitting formally. Even though his physical endurance was not lacking now, sitting seiza for too long still made his legs uncomfortable, so he generally avoided it.

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto glanced at the seated Kaiser but said nothing, only speaking up.

“Since you’re ready, then starting today, you’re officially appointed.”

“Tomorrow morning, the Captains of each squad will gather for your inauguration ceremony. So for today, you’ll stay here.”

“Also, there’s something else I need to tell you. You won’t be the only one appointed during tomorrow’s ceremony. Another person will also assume a Captain’s position alongside you.”

Upon hearing this, Kaiser was slightly stunned.

“Someone else?”

It seemed he had thought of something.

“That’s right,” Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto nodded. “Captain Kuchiki of Division 6, had long planned to retire. Now that the long-vacant Captain seat of Division 3 is finally to be filled, he took the opportunity to submit his request to step down.”

Within the Gotei 13, there was technically no formal resignation system.

Because the Central 46, which governed Seireitei, regarded the Gotei 13 as a noble institution, they did not allow “disqualified members” to exist among the already-qualified ranks.

Though it sounded unreasonable, members of the Gotei 13 were generally not allowed to leave of their own will. Only under unavoidable circumstances would they be granted a temporary leave of absence.

Shinigamis on leave who failed to return after a long time would be directly struck from the records.

As for formal dismissal, that typically applied to Shinigamis deemed ideologically or behaviorally dangerous—akin to expulsion from school. Those declared as having been dismissed would be forcibly confined within the Special Detention Building, effectively imprisoned and monitored.

Therefore, when a member of the Gotei 13 left due to betrayal, death, retirement, expulsion, or promotion, the organization would select a qualified candidate to fill the vacant position.

The current Captain of Division 6 had requested to retire under the “retirement” category.

It was originally planned for a later time, but since the final vacant seat in the Gotei 13 was about to be filled, he decided to step down now and let his successor take over.

“His successor is the 28th head of the Kuchiki Clan, regarded as the most outstanding heir in its history—Byakuya Kuchiki.”

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto delivered the information slowly and deliberately.

“The Kuchiki Clan…”

Kaiser narrowed his eyes slightly.

Everyone knew that nobles existed in Seireitei.

These were families descended from the pioneers with long-standing histories in the Soul Society. Each one could be called a noble house, descended from Shinigamis born with innately powerful Reiryoku.

Among these many noble houses, four were the oldest and most prominent.

These Four Great Noble Clans were interrelated, and generation after generation produced individuals of extraordinary ability and strength.

They received elite education and took up key positions in the Gotei 13 and other organizations. They were tasked with setting an example for the people of the Soul Society.

The Kuchiki Clan was one of the Four Great Noble Clans, and ranked first among them—wielding the greatest authority. Its members were revered even among other noble families, with many servants and immense influence. They served as paragons for all Shinigamis and bore the duty of upholding and enforcing the laws of the Soul Society.

In Division 6, a noble-exclusive squad, the positions of Captain and Lieutenant were usually held by members of the Kuchiki Clan. This squad was essentially their personal domain. At least for the Captain’s position, this had always been the case. Occasionally, exceptions occurred for the Lieutenant role.

Currently, the Kuchiki Clan had passed to its 28th generation, and the present head—Byakuya Kuchiki—had surpassed his predecessor’s strength in just a few decades. He was considered the most outstanding heir in the history of the Kuchiki Clan.

“Though he’s still not quite your equal, Byakuya Kuchiki is especially remarkable even among noble history,” said Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto. “From the moment he took over as clan head, the Division 6 Captain position was destined to fall into his hands sooner or later.”

The implication was simple: why wait? With the final Captain position in the Gotei 13 being filled, they might as well push this already-decided successor forward too.

“Tomorrow’s inauguration ceremony will thus be a joint appointment for Division 3 and Division 6.”

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto lifted his wrinkled eyes and looked toward Kaiser, asking him just in case,

“If you have any questions, now’s the time to ask.”

Upon hearing this, Kaiser shook his head.

“I don’t have any problems,” he replied with a smile. “If there is a problem, it’s probably the other side who’ll have one, right?”

To be inaugurated together with a commoner from the filthiest District 80 of Rukongai, someone from the exalted noble house might not be thrilled.

“Head Kuchiki is a reasonable man. He wouldn’t think that a genius who’s broken multiple Soul Society records lacks the qualifications to stand beside him.”

So said Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto.

“Then that’s fine.”

Kaiser replied nonchalantly.

“Chōjirō,” Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto said, seeing that everything had been settled, “prepare a room for Captain Kaiser.”

This time, he didn’t even call him “Kaiser” anymore—he called him “Captain Kaiser.”

That meant Kaiser’s appointment as Captain was now official. There would be no further changes and no surprises.

“Yes.”

Chōjirō Sasakibe nodded and bowed toward Kaiser.

“This way, please, Captain Kaiser.”

Even this Lieutenant of Division 1 now treated Kaiser with new respect—not as an up-and-coming youngster, but as someone who stood above him.

Once again, Kaiser felt just how rigid the hierarchy of the Soul Society was.

But—

“Not bad at all.”

As the beneficiary, Kaiser accepted it with ease.

The next day, early morning.

When Kaiser awoke and finished preparing himself, his clothing had undergone a major transformation.

The white robes of the Shin'ō Academy student were gone. In their place were a black kimono and a white haori.

“So this is the Shihakushō?”

Kaiser looked down at the kimono beneath the haori and curiously brushed his fingers across it.

To him, it just felt like an ordinary kimono.

In truth, this full-black outfit—with kimono-style top and wide-legged pants on the bottom—was the official work uniform for Shinigamis performing their duties. Its name: Shihakushō.

Compared to ordinary clothes, Kaiser didn’t notice any obvious differences.

He only knew that this was a special garment that would restore itself using the wearer’s Reiatsu when damaged.

“Pretty comfortable to wear. Doesn’t feel restrictive at all.”

Kaiser moved around a bit and found that the Shihakushō was surprisingly easy to move in. No wonder so many Shinigamis could wear it while sprinting and leaping around without issue.

As for the white haori worn over the Shihakushō—that was a garment reserved for Captains only.

In the Gotei 13, all Shinigamis wore Shihakushō, but only Captains wore the white haori emblazoned with squad numbers.

Kaiser’s haori bore the number “3” on the back, signifying his position as Captain of Division 3.

Additionally, Captain haori came in long sleeves, short sleeves, and even sleeveless varieties. Kenpachi Zaraki’s haori even had a jagged hem. Apparently, the style could be personalized.

Kaiser’s haori was sleeveless, so the black sleeves of his Shihakushō were fully exposed beneath the white haori—giving him a rather unrestrained appearance.

By the way, Lieutenants, as the second-in-command, did not wear haori. Like ordinary Squad Members, they wore Shihakushō, but they bore a Lieutenant’s Badge—usually on the arm.

Chōjirō Sasakibe of Division 1 wore a badge with the squad’s number on his arm. Gin Ichimaru also wore one with the Division 5 emblem. It was a symbol of status.

“This will do.”

Kaiser hung his Zanpakutō at his waist, concealed it beneath the haori, and that was now his public image.

“It’s almost time, Captain Kaiser.”

Chōjirō Sasakibe’s voice came at just the right moment from outside the door.

“You may proceed to the inauguration site now.”

At this, Kaiser turned and walked to the doorway, sliding the door open.

“Let’s go, then.”

He smiled calmly, not at all looking like someone about to ascend to the peak of the Shinigami world.

Yet from Kaiser’s presence, Chōjirō Sasakibe could feel a faint pressure, making his expression turn solemn.

“This Reiatsu…”

Only now did Chōjirō Sasakibe understand why the Captain Commander had appointed such a young Academy student to be the Captain of Division 3.

Even though he hadn’t witnessed Kaiser slicing an Adjuchas in half, nor seen him defeat Kenpachi Zaraki, just this Reiatsu alone—so strong it pressured even him—was proof enough that Kaiser had the qualifications and ability.

“Please.”

Chōjirō Sasakibe’s tone toward Kaiser grew even more respectful.

Kaiser nodded, then followed him to the inauguration ceremony.

At that time, some of the Captains had already arrived at the Division 1 barracks, while others were still slowly making their way there.

As one of the main participants, Kaiser was not brought into the meeting room with the other Captains, but to a side room where he would wait for his entrance.

However, when he arrived, he found that someone was already there.

That person was a strikingly handsome young man with long black hair, pale violet eyes, and a stern expression. He wore a noble’s signature hairpiece—the Kenseikan—and a scarf called Ginpaku Kazahana no Uzuginu, which only high nobles were permitted to wear. Like Kaiser, he wore a Shihakushō beneath a sleeveless Captain’s haori.

He also wore white fingerless gloves, and his Zanpakutō was concealed beneath his haori, just like Kaiser’s.

When Kaiser entered the room and saw him, the other man noticed him as well—and turned to look directly at him.

“…Kaiser?”

Perhaps because he was a man of few words, his tone was cold—just as his appearance suggested.

“The one and only.”

Kaiser stood in stark contrast to him, his voice filled with a light, teasing tone.

“You must be Captain Byakuya Kuchiki, right?”

Kaiser sized him up and spoke with a smile.

“The one and only,” the man replied with the same words, glancing at Kaiser as he added, “I heard you’re quite the exceptional genius.”

“And I heard Captain Kuchiki is the most outstanding heir in the history of the Kuchiki Clan,” Kaiser replied calmly. “The title ‘genius’ seems to suit you just as well.”

“But we are no longer merely ‘geniuses in training’ in others’ eyes. We are about to become Captains,” Byakuya Kuchiki said flatly. “I know you defeated the Captain of Division 11 and proved your strength in front of all the Captains.”

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t present. I didn’t get to witness that scene.”

“If there’s ever a chance, I hope you’ll show me your strength as well.”

Byakuya Kuchiki said this plainly.

To which Kaiser only smiled and said:

“There will be a chance.”

Chapter 215: If You Still Want to Grow Strong

Next, Kaiser and Captain Byakuya Kuchiki ceased conversing; one stood with his arms folded against the wall, while the other closed his eyes in quiet meditation, waiting for time to pass.

After waiting for more than twenty minutes, Chōjirō Sasakibe finally came to notify them, informing both that the Captain inauguration ceremony could now begin.

The two then moved toward the room where the Captains were gathered and entered after the hoisting door had risen.

The scene was just as heavy with atmosphere and Reiatsu as it had been the last time Kaiser came.

In the center stood Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, with the Captains of Squads 2, 4, 5, and 7 lining his left, and those of Squads 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 standing on his right.

Kaiser looked at Kenpachi Zaraki standing among them, and his brows slightly rose.

The injuries of that battle-crazed man seemed completely healed; at this moment, Kenpachi Zaraki was standing in the midst of Isshin Kurosaki and Mayuri Kurotsuchi, grinning fiercely as if itching for another bout with Kaiser.

Of course, Kaiser paid him no mind; after casting a glance at him, he was immediately drawn to another person.

It was someone who had not come last time, the one absent from that meeting.

He had shoulder-length white hair, and though he looked like he was under thirty, his figure was slender, his posture refined, and his countenance—completely contrary to Kenpachi Zaraki’s—was as gentle as that of Sōsuke Aizen.

He was the Captain of Division 13, Floated by Jūshirō Ukitake.

This time, the Captain of Division 13, who often missed meetings due to physical reasons, had finally made an appearance at the Captain inauguration ceremony; upon seeing that Kaiser was looking his way, he immediately returned a friendly smile that exuded a sense of closeness, making anyone who saw him at first glance think he was a very amiable person.

"Is that Jūshirō Ukitake?"

Kaiser secretly observed him for a while and found that no matter his presence or aura, he appeared rather slight, and the Reiatsu he emitted did not seem very strong, as if he might collapse if a strong wind blew upon him.

Such a person seemingly should not be present in a gathering of the top-tier Shinigamis of the entire Soul Society.

However, Kaiser, well-acquainted with the original story, knew full well that despite his feeble appearance, like Shunsui Kyōraku, he was counted among the top Captains, and there were even more special aspects about him that made him by no means one to be taken lightly.

“Thump!”

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto then struck his wooden staff against the floor as Kaiser watched Jūshirō Ukitake, producing a loud sound.

"Come forward and state your name."

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto’s solemn voice elicited synchronized head-raising from both Kaiser and Captain Byakuya Kuchiki.

"I am the new Captain of Division 3 of the Gotei 13, Kaiser."

Kaiser responded calmly with a composed expression.

"I am the new Captain of Division 6 of the Gotei 13, Byakuya Kuchiki."

Captain Byakuya Kuchiki repeated in an expressionless tone.

"Excellent."

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto seemed to desire precisely that effect, nodding and saying, "From this day forth, you shall all serve as Captains of the Gotei 13. As those who stand at the pinnacle among Shinigamis, you must fulfill the responsibilities that are rightfully yours."

"Captain of Division 3, Captain Kaiser."

"Captain of Division 6, Captain Kuchiki."

"Return to your positions."

As soon as Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto finished speaking, Kaiser and Byakuya Kuchiki both proceeded to walk toward the formation on his left, taking their respective positions.

This was the proper formation: with Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto at the center as Captain Commander; six Captains standing on the left and six on the right, arranged in order by squad number.

For example, Byakuya Kuchiki, as the Captain of Division 6, stood flanked by the Captains of Squads 5 and 7—that is, Sōsuke Aizen and Sajin Komamura.

Kaiser, as the Captain of Division 3, had on his sides, respectively, the Captain of Division 2, represented by Suì-Fēng, and the Captain of Division 4, represented by Retsu Unohana.

When they took their positions, one of them only stood there coldly, giving no sign of acknowledgment toward Kaiser, while the other smiled gently at him, exuding the demeanor of a mature lady.

Of course, Kaiser was very well aware that the true natures of these two were entirely different from the images they projected.

At first glance, the seemingly cold Suì-Fēng was, in fact, a person whose exterior belied her inner warmth, not as heartless as she appeared.

Likewise, the seemingly gentle and kind Retsu Unohana actually harbored an inner demon almost impossible to subdue, liable at any moment to break free from its restraints.

There were indeed many such individuals among the Captains.

Some who appeared very gentle might actually be extremely ruthless, known only to themselves.

Some who looked very righteous might have already embarked on a crooked path without even realizing it.

Some who appeared lazy or unserious were, in truth, shrewd and adept at using their wits; some even concealed their true identities so thoroughly that they dared not reveal their faces, yet possessed a positivity greater than anyone else.

Among the Captains, a man like Kenpachi Zaraki, who laid his true character bare for all to see, was one of the few who did so.

It was a pity; this fellow was a madman, and in that respect, he was also extremely dangerous.

Not knowing what Kaiser was thinking, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto looked at the array of Captains arranged in vertical rows to his left and right, a rare expression of satisfaction and delight flickering in his eyes.

"After several decades, the positions of the Captains of the Gotei 13 have finally been filled, with all vacancies now completed," he said.

"But, gentlemen, remember not to repeat the mistakes of the past by trampling on the dignity of the Gotei 13."

"You must always remember that you are the pillars of the Soul Society; only while you stand firm will the Soul Society remain unshaken."

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto once again struck his wooden staff; its sound echoed slowly and resoundingly.

"The Captain inauguration ceremony is hereby concluded. Now..."

Next, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto mentioned several matters, such as the investigation results into the incident during the recent internship at the Shin'ō Academy, where Grade 6 and Grade 1 students were involved.

Regrettably, the results yielded nothing.

No matter how much the Squads 2 and 8 investigated or how the Division 12 tracked the source, they ultimately could not identify the culprit behind the incident; they could only deduce a few of the enemy's intentions based on the available intelligence.

The opposing party deliberately severed the connections between the Soul Society and the Academy students participating in the internship and opened the barrier at the training site to send in Hollows, clearly intending to strike the students down.

Whether this action was aimed at just one individual or at all of those present had still not been conclusively determined.

But one thing was certain: the enemy undoubtedly had a thorough understanding of the Soul Society, of Seireitei, and even of the structure of the Gotei 13; otherwise, they would not have been able to so easily sever the link between the Soul Society and the outside, thereby instigating the incident unnoticed.

Furthermore, the Hollows that appeared at the scene, after analysis by the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, were determined to have been subject to artificial modification—their ability to hide Reiatsu was the result of such alterations.

Yet it remained terribly regrettable that nobody could determine what technology or theories the enemy had used to accomplish this; Division 12 could only find leftover traces that were essentially scraps, showing no sign of who was responsible.

And what the enemy hoped to achieve by this remained undetermined by the various squads.

With such a less-than-satisfactory investigation outcome, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto was naturally dissatisfied.

Yet he did not give up entirely. Instead, he urged all squads to continue cooperating with the investigation before moving on to other matters.

After raising these issues and discussing them on the spot, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto finally announced the session was adjourned.

The Captains then left the room; some chatted with each other as they departed, some left in silence, and some went over to greet the new Captain, Kaiser, while others paid him no heed—their attitudes clearly reflecting their positions.

Especially Kenpachi Zaraki, who, as expected, clung stubbornly to Kaiser.

"Let's have another bout! Kaiser!"

Kenpachi Zaraki shouted at Kaiser, his voice full of determination.

"You won't refuse, will you? Right?"

Faced with Kenpachi Zaraki’s incessant prattle, Kaiser naturally grew irritated.

"No, allow me to refuse," Kaiser replied bluntly, "I do not believe that after just one month, you have grown strong enough to defeat me."

"If you want to challenge me, go back and get stronger first."

Kaiser's words did not deter Kenpachi Zaraki at all.

"In any case, such matters can only be resolved by fighting!" Kenpachi Zaraki grinned broadly.

"To grow strong, one must naturally engage in battle. What could be more conducive to strength than clashing with a formidable opponent?"

... That sort of thing—there is no one else capable of it, right?

Kaiser knew very well that Kenpachi Zaraki was a natural combat genius; the more he fought, the stronger he became—something no one else could achieve like that.

No, wait, maybe even I can do that?

Recalling his previous experiences in the High School DxD world, where he traveled the world and challenged various legendary forces, stimulated by the power of the Dragon, Kaiser realized that the more intense battles he endured, the stronger his power became.

In other words, are we not the same type?

Glancing at Kenpachi Zaraki, who stood before him grinning broadly, Kaiser narrowed his eyes.

"Forget it," he said with a dismissive flick of his tongue, "If you truly want to grow stronger, then go back and figure out a way to know the name of your Zanpakutō."

Kenpachi Zaraki froze.

"Zanpakutō?"

He seemed not to have expected Kaiser to say that.

"That kind of thing is utterly trivial, isn't it?" Kenpachi Zaraki furrowed his brows, saying, "A Zanpakutō is merely a tool for fighting; it doesn't need a name—so long as it can be used to cut, isn't that enough? That's what you've always thought, right?"

Kaiser shook his head and said, "A Zanpakutō is just a tool for battle; it doesn't need a name, as long as it can cut people—haven’t you always thought so?"

"Then I ask you, Zaraki: do you like fighting?"

"Of course."

Without hesitation, Kenpachi Zaraki answered.

Then Kaiser, in the most direct manner possible, threw a sentence at him:

"Since you so love fighting, why on earth are you unwilling to even know the name of the tool that helps you fight?"

At these words, Kenpachi Zaraki was completely dumbfounded.

Seeing this, Kaiser spoke solemnly, "I'm not one to spout the old clichés about a Zanpakutō being our partner, our comrade-in-arms."

"How one treats one's Zanpakutō is a personal matter, and no one else should have a say."

"But, Zaraki, if you truly want to challenge me and if you do not unleash your Zanpakutō to release your true power, then forgive me for saying this: you will never be able to defeat me."

That was the truth.

After all, in the last battle, Kaiser did not even use Shikai, let alone Bankai;

He didn’t even employ Kidō—Kaiser merely used Zanjutsu, Shunpo, and Reiatsu to confront him head-on, nearly crushing him completely.

So how could the other possibly win?

"...I still have other techniques I haven’t used yet."

Kenpachi Zaraki’s lips moved slightly before he spoke those words.

This, too, was true.

At the very least, Kaiser knew that Kenpachi Zaraki had once been taught by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto—the strongest Shinigami in history—in the art of swordsmanship.

Perhaps if Kenpachi Zaraki were to use proper swordsmanship, he might not lose so quickly.

Yet whether he loses quickly or slowly, ultimately, he still loses.

In any case, at this moment, Kaiser had little interest in Kenpachi Zaraki, unless he could unleash his Zanpakutō; that would make for an interesting spectacle.

"Try doing something you've never done before, Zaraki," Kaiser said calmly, "if you truly want to become stronger."

Having said that, Kaiser ceased speaking further and turned to leave, leaving Kenpachi Zaraki in deep thought.

However, before Kaiser had gone far, he encountered another person.

"Captain."

A woman wearing a Lieutenant’s Badge on her arm suddenly appeared before Kaiser.

She exuded a rugged, underworld aura, as if she were the wife of a gangster, which made people feel a subtle sense of fear.

Kaiser glanced at her badge and noticed the number "3" embroidered on it.

Indeed, she was the Lieutenant of Division 3—Kaiser's subordinate.

"Are you Chikane Iba?"

Kaiser had already learned of her existence from Chōjirō Sasakibe.

"Indeed, I am Iba."

Chikane Iba looked at Kaiser with a severe gaze, as if appraising him, and said, "I am here to escort you back to the barracks."

Upon hearing this, Kaiser nodded.

"Come on, lead me to the barracks."
