What kind of armor would mermaids wear? I feel that they'd at most wear some kind of light armor that doesn't affect their movement too much, since they would rely more on their speed and agility to avoid getting hit at all without affecting their mobility with how they fight with tridents and spears.
As for their tail, it being the largest part of their body, there'd be too much surface area to have to cover and would affect their motion and thus survivability. Plus, it's actually a lot tougher than you'd think with the scales and powerful muscles and also being rather slippery.
