This really was an excellent experiment. Despite the roughness of these sketches (I didn't bother to ink at all), the results are remarkable. Separating the color from the value when it comes to rendering has really helped me think about both those aspects, and subsequently result in stronger pieces, I think. I also started dabbling with Color Maps, and let me tell you, they're amazing. The Aloy piece uses a lot of color maps to get those tones. They're just set to "color" and dropped on top of my greyscale value maps. The local color of Aloy herself is an overlay layer. There's some touch ups after all that is turned on, but that's the basics: greyscale tones < environmental color layer < local color overlay layer. It's kind of amazing.
