DEATH STRANDING | [ALL CUTSCENES - PART 5!!] | THAT ENDING GOT ME!

The last part is here and I'll be honest, I almost stopped at part 3 but... I'm so glad I continued!

This is most likely the longest post review I've ever done on the channel. The editor cut out a further 10 minutes of me ranting about things I liked, loathed and loved! What's my final opinion? You'll have to watch a find out.

I guess I can check out the Trailer now for DS2!

Enjoy.

The best way I can describe how I felt during the beach scene is I was just so invested in the story and so hungry to learn more that it didn’t even cross my mind as an issue because she kept giving me the info I had been waiting the whole game to get.

You have a point with your criticisms of how Kojima delivers his story. The first time I played through the whole game I didn't understand any of it at the end. I'm more of a visual person so I would check out when the dialogue scenes went on too long. The opening couple of hours are my favorite because it's almost all visual storytelling. It's a shame because there is an incredible and unique story being told, just not always being told effectively. I've been watching this series to better understand the story leading into the second game. It makes a lot more sense when the story isn't broken up by hours of trekking around all over the place. I agree absolutely that the best part of the story is the flashbacks with Mads. My biggest gripe through the rest of the game is that the story never really revolved around Sam in a personal way.

I picked this game up a year after release, first time i got bored and quit chapter one but i played it again couple months later and got absolutely hooked. The gameplay is so fun and the story is gold. It's definitely one of my favourite games of all times. But from the outside it does look very boring. You gotta experience it to understand i think.

Loved your review and analysis of the cinematics. As a motion designer that is studying cinematography to improve my skills your explanations were extremely helpful. I subscribed so that I could see Part 3 and up and and I look forward to watching your other videos as well. On a critical note, the game is highly immersive, beautiful, emotional, and at times scary. But it also evolves, how you play on day 1 is nothing like the end of the game. However, the game doesn't automatically power you up, it gives you the tools to do so. Unfortunately, you didn't see any of that. Also, some people don't build up their world and end up playing the whole thing like it's day 1. It'd be like playing Minecraft and not building anything. Sam is meant to improve his environment using state-of-the-art tech. I think when there are parts that don't make as much sense to you, it's because you haven't earned the reward, you haven't experienced the journey. You haven't read the emails and archives of lore. You're just not immersed by sitting back and watching only cutscenes. It's analogous to watching football match highlights and not watching the match; a simple goal is much more impactful when both teams battled ferociously with injuries and red cards until someone scored in the last minute. It might not be the game for you, and that's fine, but I don't see how you can make that call until you play it. This is probably true of most games, but I think it's especially true of a Kojima one; you need to be in his world to fully appreciate it. Anyhoo, just my 2 cents :-P I greatly enjoyed your cinematic commentary and I feel like I leveled up as if I just experienced a masterclass. I think the way I look at cinematics and movies will be permanently changed and gives me hope for implementing these techniques in my own work. Cheers!

Some people would have loved it from the word get go. People who know Kojima's work and love it no matter what.

The gameplay really clicks for some people, but until you try the gameplay yourself I think it probably looks pretty boring. I absolutely love the gameplay, it's a very chill experience most of the time and doesn't just involve pushing the stick forward. You can feel every footstep and have to actively watch where you walk. The sound of the world around you is also all you hear. This was my first Kojima game when I played it and I was absolutely glued to the story, I couldn't stop thinking about it. At no point was I ever bored when I played it, even the static screens with talking. Gameplay-wise those moments make sense as static screens because Sam is by himself in the wilderness 95% of the time. This game works best when there's a little gameplay shown because some of the moments walking there is music that kicks in and they really bring an atmosphere to the game that you just don't get just watching the cutscenes. Half of the story is in the atmosphere of the world and the feel that the game is supposed to give you. It doesn't come through as a whole like this but I did enjoy watching you experience this series.

I dropped the game halfway. Couldn't do it. It was a shame cause I really enjoyed the story and the element of mystery. But man, the gameplay does seem like an afterthought here. Utterly boring and tedious, felt like doing chores, not enough variation in the mechanics that are already unengaging as is, no real progression. You run around the same scenery for hours and your "reward" is a hologram of some dude telling you things you don't care about and your MC doesn't either. Those gameplay bits get reeeeally long between the cutscenes in the middle of the game, and it was just unbearable. To be fair there were parts that broke it down a little, like the WWI scenes with Cliff. Wasn't enough for me personally to make the game engaging, even though I really made myself play it at some points hoping it would get more fun but it didn't. Not playing the second game exactly for that reason, will probably just watch the cutscenes on youtube. I am very much a story-driven gamer, I play mostly to experience a good story in a different way than film or literature. But if you are making a game, the mechanics are gotta be interesting and draw you in, otherwise even the story cannot save it. I wonder if there are people who enjoyed the game mechanics from beginning to end.

I didn't catch the rain bit at all, I was to caught up in Lou's little face.

With the 2nd game coming later in June it'd be interesting to see your reaction to the Death Stranding 2 trailers now that you've got context on the 1st games story <3

You wondered if we, the viewer, were on our phone doing the long dialog scenes towards the end. Kojima has ALWAYS been a film nut. Most people that played Death Stranding had also grown up playing all the Metal Gear Solid games. Notoriously famous for its long codec calls and cutscenes. You know exactly what you're in for when you buy a game directed from him. The audience loves this stuff. I normally do too. But man. I struggled through Death Stranding. The gameplay NEVER clicked for me. I forced myself to finish the game during a Christmas break with my housemate, I wouldn't have been able to finish it by myself. His sequel comes out very soon. I know the story will be amazing but I'm dreading playing this gameplay formula again. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has a remake coming out this year. All new graphics and gameplay but still Kojima’s original vision. If you decide to ever check out the Metal Gear Solid series, it is the first game chronologically in the grand story. It is a great starting off point. Others might urge you to watch the games in order. Creating a poll for audience input would be your best bet.

Did you catch after he got Lou out of the pod and walked outside in the rain? Remember that the rain is “timefall” that makes whatever it touches older? Throughout the game, all rain is Timefall due to the Death Stranding event connecting the world of the living and dead. But after Amelie (the Extinction Entity) separates herself and her Beach from the world forever to prevent the Last Stranding, the Death Stranding phenomenon ends. The scene shows them walking out into the rain which is no longer Timefall and an ordinary rainbow forms above them.

Ridge

I didn't like the bit at the end with having to run around on the Beach and have Amelie walk around explaining. It took too long. I was listening but I was losing focus. This is somewhere where an editor would have come in with scissors and make cuts if they were not locked in a cupboard.
