This is still super rough and I'm not happy with the anatomy at all yet but this is essentially how I start out paintings.
I scout for pose and color refs and then just doodle a rough thumbnail which I gradually clean up.

Any advice would help! I started drawing last week and it has been incredibly painful, especially when surrounded by such talented artists.
