"Encouraged by the publication of Sense and Sensibility in 1811, Austen "lop't and crop't" and significantly revised the manuscript of First Impressions in 1811-1812, changing its title to Pride and Prejudice to avoid duplicating the title of another book published in 1800." Opens up a world for more than (generally) white characters. But… Regency romance isn’t running around banging a lot. 😅 Sure. It probably happened more than written about…. But still. Women had to be VERY careful. You guys really should watch Sense & Sensibility for what happens when men wanted steamy & the women had to live (or not) with the consequences.

2024-08-17 23:24:50 +0000 UTCThat’s not the same “Pemberly”, which is not a real place. Back in the day, you didn’t mention real places outside of major cities. I think in my reading of P&P the town the characters live in is literally written as M———— or something similar. Remember at the time… beauty = goodness. So the woman who runs Darcy’s house would say that he’s handsome. The Gardners are Lizzie’s aunt & uncle and probably the best people in P&P. You guys assume that people then knew everything that we do now. People lived in small worlds, usually. & religion & being “good” was important. You mock it, but it was important to be considered good by all. Even your servants. Actually… this is an important moment because his servants LOVE him. The Darcy we met first seems like the kind that would be mean to those under him, but the woman who runs his house, live in the town nearby, etc. all go out of their way to speak about how wonderful & lovely & kind he is. If you notice, the aunt looks at Lizzie oddly because this is opposite what Mr W has told them. The Gardners, unlike most other characters, are good judges of character.

Times have changed mostly… redheads were also associated often with villains in Bible, the left handed (as a left handed, I wish I was kidding), Judas, Satan himself, Mary Magdalene, etc are all allegedly red headed at one point.

2024-08-17 22:38:49 +0000 UTCIn the book, it makes a point of saying that Jane lacks the "exuberance" of her sisters, and that she's shy. It's apparent in the story that unless you know Jane well, you'd just see a girl politely smiling, and quietly listening to Bingley talk while occasionally interjecting. She was never flirtatious like mothers trained their daughters to be to get husbands. Darcy believing that Jane did not have feelings for Bingley is totally reasonable. If the series/films focused more on Jane/Bingley and the societal expectations at the time, it'd be more obvious. Jane's family knows her well, and are privileged to how utterly besotted, devoted, and in love she is with Bingley in a way strangers are not. The novel was initially titled "First Impressions", and it's my unpopular opinion that that's a much better title.

He's already behaving very differently on this episode, but he needed time to allow her words about him to sink in and for him to reflect on his behaviour. He wrote that letter immediately after her rejection of him. I can't remember how it's described in the show but in the book he tells her later that he was still feeling a lot of anger and resentment towards her when he wrote the letter and once they're together he asks her to destroy the letter as he regretted how he worded it.

2024-08-08 09:07:13 +0000 UTCIn a talk show interview with both Colin Firth and Matthew Macfayden, Colin talked about when he first saw the script for the part where he comes out of the water. Apparently there was no mention of him being clothed as he came out of the water, only that Mr. Darcy was to remove his clothes before getting in the water, so Colin was under the impression that he would be fully nude in that scene!

2024-08-08 06:57:42 +0000 UTCThey literally created a weird wet shirt statue of Colin Firth's Darcy (seriously Google it)...it literally is that much of a phenomenon in UK. One of the reason why Colin Firth got the role of Mr Darcy in the book adaptation of Bridget Jones Diary, is because of his portrayal of Mr Darcy in this series. Helen Fielding the author even wrote her novel Darcy with Colin Firth in mind...LOL. It's why I alway recommend Bridget Jones Diary to folks who love the Pride & Prejudice period films...especially this BBC one! Can't wait to see the next ep reaction!

FYI the house used for Pemberley in this version isn't the same as the 2005 version which used Chatsworth House. The BBC version used two locations: Lyme House in Cheshire for the exterior and Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire for the interior.

2024-08-07 20:29:57 +0000 UTCAlso you will never understand the cultural effect Mr Darcy in a wet shirt had upon the UK, was insane. there were references to it in loads of shows, the most recent of which in the Barbie movie. Would recommend watching St Trinians at some point, Colin Firth spoofes his role in this. as well as in bridget jones.

Mr Darcy has pride in his standing, as well as serious social anxiety issues lol, and was prejudiced a little against those who act with less propriety aka the bennets. Lizzie has pride in her ability to understand someone's character immediately and is thus very prejudiced by her first impressions.

Also they (Mrs Forster and Lydia) get up to even more shenanigans in the book including dressing Lt Denny in women's clothing - Austenian drag show! Also the location for the 1995 P&P Pemberley is Lyme Castle, the 2005 location is Chatsworth House

This one, he freely told Lizzie Bingley and his sisters were visiting, and invited her to come see them. If he was still keeping Bingley from Jane, he would keep Lizzie from Bingley as well, so she wouldn't remind him of his love for Jane.
