Mod Support in the Browser Version

Thanks to a number of internal improvements, mod support will be coming to the web version of the game in version 0.13.

Whether online or offline, the browser versions of the game will now be able to run mod files, though there are some restrictions. Due to security limitations, you cannot load mod files from your own system, you can only load mod files that are hosted on the web. I will be providing hosted versions of official mods for users, but this means you will need to be connected to the Internet to play with mods, even if you're using a downloaded copy of the game. Tech-savvy users may be able to use a localhost server to host the mod files themselves, however, even while offline, but for normal users, this is probably more trouble than it's worth.

There are some other limitations and technical considerations as well, but the long and short of it is that performance can be affected by mods, though I haven't been able to produce any noticeable slowdown in my stress-testing so far, it is possible that low-powered systems that are otherwise more than capable of running the game itself may struggle to run it with mods.

While there aren't really any third-party mods yet, at least that I'm aware of, third-party mod developers will be on their own to find hosting for their mod files if they want users of the web version to be able to play them.

Lastly, I expect mods to work on mobiles and other devices, but I have not tested this thoroughly yet, and probably won't be able to before releasing v0.13, so support for mods on mobiles is currently up in the air. Mobile browsers have much higher security than desktop browsers, so it could be that mod support may take more time, or even be impossible on these devices. Ditto for JoiPlay.
