I'm scrapping live events
Added 2024-11-06 13:00:15 +0000 UTCIt was not my intention to create some sort of predatory FOMO system. Maybe I'll do a post-mortem in the future explaining why I thought a system like this was a good idea, but for now, I don't plan to go forward with these sorts of events.
The ongoing Halloween event will remain available as planned until Nov 11th.

I think you nailed it on the head. I'm of the same opinion that its a spectrum but I can feel the fear other people have with this kind of stuff being introduced into any game.

2024-11-30 06:31:40 +0000 UTCI can deliver significant gameplay content through the server, so that's definitely a system I can use for all sorts of neat things, I just don't plan to specifically create limited-time live events anymore.

2024-11-11 12:24:06 +0000 UTCIt has been enlightening to see reactions. Personally, I see things like this as existing on a spectrum that only becomes bad/predatory when you get past a certain point on that scale, but I didn't consider that a lot of people see it more like a binary, like 1% FOMO and 100% FOMO are both still FOMO. I hadn't really thought of it like that, and it's not an unreasonable way to see it. I don't think anyone was saying I was going too far, but I get where they are coming from now.

2024-11-11 12:21:56 +0000 UTCThis would be fine for the holiday and seasonal content. One of my other goals for the live event system was to create a way to drive traffic to the game for online play; I worried that in the future, with patrons and free users getting content at different times, the online components might end up seeming dead for patrons compared to free users. I think the main problem for me is in finding a reward that players would want enough to actually consider doing a time-limited event, but not something that would be too FOMO-inducing. That said, I don't think time-limited events will ever be something people feel good about, it'll always be seen as FOMO or predatory, and that's probably true even if there were no rewards, so I don't think I can square this circle.

2024-11-11 12:15:59 +0000 UTCfwiw i didnt have a problem with it but ive seen so many games do this in the wrong way and they just ignore user complaints. even if you plan to redo something like this in the future it's refreshing to hear a game maker take this criticism seriously. Thank you for having the integrity to rethink where this could potentially lead and reconsider how/when/if you want to do it. impressive!

2024-11-07 20:35:30 +0000 UTCI've seen games where the event is easily available at a certain time each year, but there is also some kind of semi-hidden in-game trigger for the impatient.

2024-11-07 07:58:12 +0000 UTCbest way to go about it honestly, so you can add holiday stuff that people can play even years down the line

2024-11-06 21:20:22 +0000 UTCMaybe go the Corruption of Champions route? Have the events pop up every {relevant holiday} if not previously completed?
