Blazing Saddles (1974) - Full Reaction

Well this had its moments but definitely not my favorite Mel Brooks, and probably my worst reaction 🫠🤦‍♀️I struggled! I mean, I chuckled and loved Jim and Bart but I felt his others were more spot on for me. I forgot to mention Young Frankenstein in my intro of ones I had seen, and that one was actually probably my favorite! What are your Mel Brooks movie rankings?

Blazing Saddles (1974) - Full Reaction

You've seen the Brooks' movies except for History of the World (at least I can't find it on your list). It's one of the funniest ones, especially the Spanish Inquisition and the French Revolution. You owe it to yourself to see it. People make the mistake of not watching Brooks' movies in chronological order. He tends to carry over jokes, lines, music, people, etc., from movie to movie. If you've seen Robin Hood, you owe it to yourself to see where Patrick Stewart's line, "It's good to be the king!" came from and the Men In Tights song came from (both are from History of the World). You are probably too young to know who Richard Prior was. He was a "push the envelope" type of comic and he wrote a lot of this movie. Brooks and Prior had intense discussions over the use of slurs. Prior insisted on it to show how it sounds to others and to show racism. You'll notice Brooks never said more than Ni. But truly, you owe it to yourself to watch History Of The World. And you haven't seen Dr Strangelove either? Shame on you! That was Slim Pickens' (Taggart in Blazing Saddles) first big movie. Plus you get to see a very young James Earl Jones. It also stars George C. Scott. And Peter Sellers plays three characters in the movie. It's a dark comedy, but it gives you a feel of what the US was like after the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Loved your reaction to this. When you re-watch it, I think you'll appreciate it more. Try Mel Brooke's "History of the World" next. More similar to Monte Python humor. Also, your hair looks seriously hot, long like it is right now. Don't cut it, no offense to your husband. Ben, you're a lucky man.

I just saw High Anxiety yesterday and it's still funny after all these years.

I’ve never been a big Mel Brooks fan but I do remember quite liking High Anxiety. Although it’s been about 40yrs since I’ve seen it. Blazing Saddles’ benefitted from the early days of Video Rental. Along with Stir Crazy and the Blues Brothers, it was the rental of choice for teenage boys across the land… again and again… and again 😂

This movie does not age well.. and yes other people said this already but even Mel Brooks said that movie couldnt be made back then. But its still a classic for a reason.. Ive never seen you squirm so much in a reaction Cassie.. I felt bad for you. Your reactions were just as funny to me as the movie itself. I guess you could say that ending .... went off the rails...get it? Ha ha ha ha ha...

First time in a reaction when I watched you more than the movie, your reaction to some of the lines were fantastic! I personally love this one, but maybe I'm just warped

I think you need to look up the definition of "satire" again.

The look of horror on Cassie’s face listening to some of the dialogue was priceless. Blacks, Jews and gays all took a hit with this movie; Mel Brooks is an equal opportunity offender. Honestly, I think I’d only seen the TV-friendly version before (instead of Amazon Prime ) and was surprised by the number of times they used the N-word. Still, I enjoyed the friendship between Bart and Jim (also Mongo).

I was sold when they start singing "I get no kick from champagne..." and in harmony, so cool!

Yep, pretty much what I expected from the reaction, I thought it was going to be rough with all the racial elements, but there some biggish laughs in there. Maybe we'll get "The Producers" one day. Also, David Huddlesron the "Johnson" that relents on Irish, is from a movie that is much loved on the channel... he was the titular "Big Lebowski" that was not abiding "The Dude".

This is absolutely my favorite Mel Brooks movie, followed closely by "Spaceballs" (probably due to my love of the OT). "History of the World: Part I" would be my Bronze Medal winner. The ability to make us laugh while satirically making fun of racists is genius writing by Mel and Richard. Besides, how can you not love a movie that homages Loonie Tunes. ;)

So, Cassie has seen "Tropic Thunder", let me take a wild guess that she didn't like that one either. 😆
