The Last of Us (S2:E4) - Full Reaction

Gotta say the set makers have done fantastic in getting eveything looking like the game, I'm still enjoying the show. It's a shame the comments are getting so toxic would hope people would just let things be if you not even watching the show at all or save that for someother internet forum.

Your read of how poorly things are written in Part 2 is exactly why many of us loved the first game and pretty much hate the second one. The minority of hardcore defenders for Part 2 will continue to try and poison the well like they always have by accusing us of bigotry and being “chuds” (I’ve already seen some of it in these very comments) but the truth is the story in part 2 was always poorly written and entirely contradictory to the character arcs of the first game. Because the show is staying pretty close to the games, we’ll see that whole reaction continue to play out all over again during the rest of the show, especially as viewership continues to drop off, audience reviews continue to grow in criticism, and defenders become more unglued and toxic in trying to defend the indefensible.

Given the many discussions about Joel's death and the series staying true to the game, I have a question for the gamers. With the exception of the original Driver (at which I was a legend in my own bedroom) the last games I played on a computer were the old Tomb Raider/Bloodrayne/Cate Archer adventures on pc. That being the case, my understanding of this sort of game is that you play a certain character (of which there may be several) and then have to navigate through a series of adventures and scenarios - often perilous to your health. You die, you reappear, your lives diminish, but you always get the chance to rectify your mistakes. Here's my problem with The Last of Us and the insistence that the series had to stay true to the game. As Lara Croft, I often turned a corner and fell into a pit full of spikes, or was ambushed by an army, or missed my jump and fell to my death - but as in Jumanji, the game would then reset, my character would reappear at an earlier stage of the game (minus one life) and on I would go again. One thing's for sure, I never accidentally fell into that pit twice, I never advanced into the area I was ambushed before without foreknowledge and a different strategy, and if I had been playing Joel in The Last of Us, I would never have let Abbie trick me TWICE into saving her or taking her back to her safe house. Second time around, I would've probably shot the veg-head who was attacking her AND THEN SHOT ABBIE HERSELF! Problem solved, move on to the next obstacle. I'm clearly missing something, which is why I'm asking. It just seems very strange to a casual 90s gamer that the character you're playing in a game (in this case The Last Of Us version of Lara Croft) can be killed and that's the end of the character. Where's the extra lives and scene reset, people?
