The Sum of All Fears (2002) - Full Reaction

Comments

i have the same issue. 8 commercial breaks

Nico Hartling

Quite the timely set of nations - South Africa - Israel- Ukraine. Problems from USA giving Israel nukes. Interesting

VOCFM

Im not sure why the YouTube full watch along has commercials, its doesnt usually....am I the only one that had this problem?

Chris Retzlaff

Holy cow!! A wild ride, indeed!! Great movie!! 🍿

Carol Rocha

It's on the "already watched" list. The original isn't so she might get that one sometime.

Mike Lemon

A few very similar types of movies that pop into my my mind, just off hand, are "Spy Game" with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, "Law Abiding Citizen" with Gerard Butler, "Edge of Darkness" with Mel Gibson, "3 Days of the Condor", the original movie with Robert Redford and the Amazon series, "The Terminal List" with Chris Pratt. I think you would like all of those based on your reactions to this movie and others you've watched.

Matt Wathen

Give the Bourne trilogy a try if you're craving spy thriller/action flix

phillip giroux

So Bridget Moynahan had Tom Brady's first son. Tom Jr. Second this reminded me so much of 24 the legendary series with are second cat we decided to name Special Agent Jack Bauer. I will never forget those words he told Renee at the end of season 7. Anyway yeah I saw this in the theater the book is better. I remember thinking they will save the day. This movie aged well. I loved Ben Affleck in Chasing Amy which came out long before this. This was 2002. I was working construction at the time. I think I watched this with my friends in the theater and then my Dad and I watched it. I know he remarked that this was on of his favorites. My gf had never seen this one before. I told her this isn't The Last Of Us you don't get to play ahead to find out what happens.

Zachary K. (Caitlin Clark fan)

Spoilers??? At the end of this stream... You: "Jack Ryan for President" Me: *spit take* "....hmmm...I dunno...would he make a good president? I wonder all the time myself." *becomes president 3 books later* Best president ever.... (sets Clark up like shaq and Kobe did with blank pardons so Clark starts 'the campus' and 'rainbow' u.n. kill team and Chavez and ryan's cousins at helm with fbi coverage to work inside u.s. boarders) (14 books later jack Ryan still president) I dunno? I wonder what his family life is like???... Jack Ryan jr. Dope campus agent does more badass shit than him... Jr for the win!!!

Sean Kay

Give a watch to The Charismatic Voice’s reaction to Nessun Dorma. It’s not a first time reaction for her, this was a song she would listen to to prepare for her own operatic performances (she is a trained opera singer who usually reacts to pop/rock songs which she wasn’t really exposed to as she grew up). A nice explanation for Pavarotti’s performance.

2-Can

The guy you recognized is Colm Feore. He plays Laufey, Loki’s true father in Thor, and he played Pierre Trudeau in a TV movie in 2002. He’s also in Chicago. He’s also the surgeon in Face/Off.

djKENTO

Good Reaction, edge of your seat, good to watch again, not my favorite of the Jack Ryan series, but still enjoyable.

John A

Oh, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona too. Why do you hurt me, Cassie?

Clarence Newman

Cassie will never react to Cool Hand Luke, The Towering Inferno, Bullitt, The Time Machine, Cannonball Run, World's Fastest Indian, Lost In Translation, The Full Monty, Cliffhanger and The Fly. There. That's the Sum Of All MY Fears.

Clarence Newman

"Watching a movie because you want to is a good enough reason for me. Not everything needs to be polled." -- Agree 100%

Clay F

Kind of a sleeper among the Jack Ryan series of films. With other movies getting more recognition. But I think it’s a good movie I enjoyed your reaction Cassie!

Robert da Spruce

Btw Cassie, you were wondering in one scene if it was fallout coming from the sky. Not sure, but I think it was snow. In the book there's a lot of snow at the time of the explosion which reflects the blast, making it look bigger than it was to NORAD. For that reason the President and his close advisors dismissed the possibility of a terrorist bomb because it appeared to large for anything other than nation state capabilities. This of course contrasted with what Ryan was telling them.

Chris Clarke

Watching a movie because you want to is a good enough reason for me. Not everything needs to be polled. I liked that it was Ron Rifkin's role from "Brothers and sisters" as the reference rather than "Alias", which you had watched at some point in the last 12-18 months. So it is a more pleasant character, as he plays quite the villain in "Alias". There is quite the room of talent yelling at other as the president and his advisors on Air Force One. Also, Colin Feore ("Olson") may have been familiar, he has been in loads of stuff, but not that long ago as the doctor that carries out the experimental surgery in "Face slash off" or more commonly "Face/Off". And, the large, older gent that was beating up Affleck at the docks is Sven Ole Thoren, who was a Russian crew member in "The Hunt for Red October", but on the channel would be better known as "Tiger" from "Gladiator".

Mojo One Thousand

Also Kevin Costner and a very hammy Kenneth Branagh, with a character I think he reprised in "Tenet". I remember mentioning this on a live and the Costner/Pine combination was the draw for Cassie..

Mojo One Thousand

"Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb!" - Batman At least the other two Batmen got the bomb to safety... Batfleck, not so much.

LittleGalaxyBoy

"Jack Ryan for President" Though they never get to that point in the movies, in the books, Jack Ryan does ascend to Vice President and then President.

Paul Ark

In the source novel, the villains are actually Arab terrorists. In the process of writing the script, they were changed to neo-Nazis because, before 9/11, it was believed that the Arabians didn't have the manpower or financial resources to execute such a large-scale attack. And a fun tidbit, when he first arrived on set, Ben Affleck told Phil Alden Robinson that it was nice to work together again. When Robinson admitted his confusion, Affleck revealed that he had been one of the Fenway Park extras in "Field of Dreams."

Tim Heron

+1 for Bourne Identity (def in my top 20 all time favs)…also, when will GOT start?

Brett John Chase

Michael B. Jordan can make anything worth a watch imo

Cole Jennett

I have always loved all the Clancy movies as the source material was so good. but I will suggest skipping the Without Remorse movie on Amazon. The book was one of my favorites and would still make for a great movie. But Amazon completely changed the story (way more than this one) and ended up with a forgetable spy flick.

Steve kephart

I totally agree. I loved reading these books in high school. I really hope Amazon does a miniseries on the Rainbow Six book. That book is perfect for several "mission" episodes with the overlying storyline.

Steve kephart

Great reaction. I knew Cassie would like this movie. It's not like any other movie so I knew just how shocked she would be, especially when the nuke goes off, because that was my reaction when I first saw this movie. I genuinely didn't see it coming.

Luke Godfrey

I love The Bourne Identity (2002) released the same year. If Carly hasn’t seen it, you could rewatch react with her first watch. I am the opposite of a completionist – so I wouldn’t mind if you never got to the sequels you mentioned. The Matrix Revolutions (2003) is bad. Hannibal (2001) and especially Hannibal Rising (2007) are bad. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) is not the greatest. I would rather you react to more of the many good original (not sequel) movies beyond the winners (which are good movies) in the true events polls I am jubilant about you reacting to Game of Thrones.

Clay F

I like the actors. Ben Affleck at the top of his game. Bridget Moynahan (the girlfriend) = pretty and good acting. Morgan Freeman is always good. Several other good actors. Below is my personal ranking based on how much I liked the content. 10/10 – The Hunt for Red October (1990) – I have nostalgia. 8.5/10 – Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan TV series. I liked this. Noomi Rapace is stunning. Krasinski and Wendell Pierce are good. I like the plots and dialogue. 7.5/10 – Clear and Present Danger (1994). I am a Harrison Ford fan. 7/10 – Patriot Games (1992) 6/10 – The Sum of All Fears (2002). Slick at times but I didn’t fully connect. Thanks for the reaction. You were into it.

Clay F

This movie started me listening to Pavarotti, Turnadot, Three Tenors.

Brian's Dog

The Last Ship is a must watch if Cassie enjoys this type of film.

ArsTropica

Chris -- listen to the intro -- she answers that question.

Clay F

Great Reaction, Cassie. This was my first time watching this movie. I don't know why I never watched it before. It was a good movie. Very different from the book. And Jack Ryan does become President, Cassie. But that is another story for another time. This movie really had you going. That's how you can tell it is a good movie. When it affects you that much and sucks you in so you can feel the stress like you are actually part of the story.

Rick Williams

She has seen it unfortunately

Cole Jennett

Very good movie sis. Oh, if you are a Ben Affleck fan you must watch his best movie in which he directed and also starred in if you have not seen it yet. It’s called ARGO from 2012. In case you haven’t seen it I don’t want to tell you what it is all about, but I will say it received these awards: Argo became a box office success, grossing $232 million worldwide, and receiving widespread critical acclaim for the acting, Affleck's direction, Terrio's screenplay, the editing, and Desplat's score. The film received seven nominations at the 85th Academy Awards and won three, for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. It is also based on a true story. If you haven’t seen it, I strongly recommend it. It’s Ben Affleck at his very best.

Lana Gorgeous

Tom Clancy's stories, both the books and films, shaped my teenage years in the 90's. I was very saddened when i heard of his passing 2013. The universe he created with Jack Ryan, John Clark, Admiral Greer, Marco Ramius, etc. never gets old. I just wish he could have continued to live on and continue writing today.

Robert Durant

She has seen it. I’m actually surprised she didn’t say “That’ll do Pig” because she has other times she’s seen him in movies.

Cole Jennett

James Cromwell is the actor you have seen but could not name. Haven't you seen "Babe" (1995)? You really must see it.

James Melton

Oh wow she'd really love that trilogy.

Robert Durant

There is only one react channel that I know of that has watched that movie. I do agree more people should give it a try.

Robert Durant

I would suggest Executive Decision - 1996 with Kurt Russell. It has all the elements you like.

Joe R

Matt Damon actually had a cameo in this film as a waiter, but it was cut for time.

Steve Holton

Chasing Amy has potential. But I mostly agree, Kevin Smith movies won’t play well for her

Cole Jennett

What’s kinda cool is that this movie and The Bourne Identity were released only a couple weeks apart. So Ben and Matt were in direct competition at the box office!

Cole Jennett

Not quite. 🙂 President Fowler's Vice President steps in when he realises what he almost did, and makes Jack National Security Advisor. The following book is Debt of Honor which takes Ryan to the top.

Chris Clarke

I had never seen that before. It was good. It had Cassie wound up; she had a little Meet the Parents moment there "Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb" "Jack Ryan for President" 🤔 it's incredible how a little thing like saving the planet can get you votes and make you look so much better.

fastecp1

Great really enjoyed this one. Edge of the seat..I thought you were going to pop out of your seat. I thought Ben Affleck was good as Ryan and how can you not love Morgan Freeman? In a left field pick if you're looking for more Affleck in more of a unusual rom com role you might want to check out Jersey Girl. Also has Liv Tyler in it and JLo. It might also be the only Kevin Smith movie I could see you enjoying on this channel.

Canadianant

Cassie might also enjoy Olympus Has Fallen (2013).

Joe J

If you want more, then The Peacemaker (1997) has similar vibe. George Clooney and Nicole Kidman are the leads.

Paweł Kościuszko

If you read the reviews, many people think Ben was miscast in the role.

󠀠

Love this movie. There is a line in here that Ben says with a really weird delivery. It sticks with me every time I think about it the movie. I think the line was written kind of stilted.

Brian's Dog

Yes that’s a good film - though I prefer Seven Days in May made the same year and on the same subject. That has a great cast including Fredric March and Burt Lancaster.

Alex Leach

https://youtu.be/ijFR0JRT8ts?si=9WPYJs8DehqlDeFF Here's the song in the end credits for convenient access. Regrettably the soundtrack still isn't on Spotify, so YouTube does the honours.

Chris Clarke

Liev Shriber played John Clark - the same character Willem Dafoe played in Clear & Present Danger. I was always disappointed in this movie, not because it isn't good, but because it deviated so far from themy favorite Clancy book.--- And it is funny you ended with "Jack Ryan for president" because that is exactly what happens at the end of the novel.

D. T. Nelson

This movie is better than it is given credit for. And today it is especially relevant. Funny that in 2002 the villain was considered far fetched.

RJ MacReady

Wow, Guys. Cassie is the Best. (I Said What I Said). I watched her reaction video and I Honestly Felt like I was watching this movie for the first time, again.

Uncle Phoenix

I’d be ok with you moving on to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. It’s not as good as the rest, but it’s worthy of a watch, and I mean…Chris Pine, Keira Knightley🤷‍♂️

Cole Jennett

You need to finish James Bond. 😊

Chris Clarke

In the Tom Clancy books, Ryan does eventually become president.

Stick Figure Studios

Entertaining movie and yeah surprising how it all went down, cant go wrong with Morgan Freeman his voice always goes well with a commanding character. I'd say wishful thinking hoping the lines of communication would be anymore clear.

Gray

Ciarán Hinds is one of those actors who's great in everything. Didn't realise he was in one of the Harry Potter films until I saw the credits.

Chris Clarke

"Jack Ryan for President"....hmmm. This is a great movie, it does deviate from the book slightly, but is still non-stop intrigue. Liv Schreiber's character. was great. I always thought it was a nice touch that Nemerov quoted JFK at the signing ceremony. Love these type movies and your reactions. Keep up the great content.

Michael West

Without Remorse was in development for a while, but they didn't seem to get very far. It would be a difficult watch if anything like the book, which dealt with some grim issues.

Chris Clarke

I'll dig out my DVD tonight!🙂

Chris Clarke

Agreed Tyler, on “Matrix Revolutions” Cassie needs to finish the Trilogy. It’s not as bad as some make out. But I would stop there. Matrix 4 “Resurrections” is pretty bad.

Mark White

That's the best commentary I have ever listened.

Reed James

Sum of All Fears follows Clear and Present Danger. Jack Ryan is the acting head of the CIA. He's advising the president and butting heads wtih him and his national security advisor. He's also dealing with the PTSD of the events of the last movie. The terrorists are also East German communists and Hezbollah. This movie was supposed to come out in late 2001 but had to be delayed because of 9/11. Still, it has the heart of the plot of terrorists trying to get Russia and America to fight each other and a president and his advisers giving into fear and wanting to strike back at Russia. Also Leiv Schreib's character John Clark is the same character William Dafoe plays in Clear and Present Danger. The pregnant lady is actually a spy in the books with her husband. They have the biggest role in Cardinal in the Kremlin which is a shame it never made it into a movie because their a great pair. Its cold war cloak and dagger spy stuff at its best. It also has a bit of a epilogue to Hunt for Red October. Also Cabot is a big dick in the books so it's weird they used his character for Morgan Freman.

Reed James

I know most won't agree but I do want you to finish The Matrix movies. At this point you should rewatch your reaction to the second one because you say something in it I've been waiting to see the payoff to for a long time. Anyway, can't wait to watch this when I get home.

Tyler Foster

This is one of my favs!! Awesome reaction Cassie!! The soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith was amazing and added so much tension to the film!! It was great seeing you on the edge of your seat the whole time!! 😂 Loved it!!

John Courtright

Now that was a great reaction. Cassie was on the edge of her bed during the entire second half of the movie. Now we know what movies Cassie likes the best. Rom Coms, and political and legal thrillers. I would suggest an old school follow up to the nuclear tensions of this movie: Failsafe (1964) is the original thriller suggesting nuclear annihilation.

MikeLL

"When it's time, I'm going to light the biggest fire the north has ever seen" forgot he was in this

fargoboyle .

didn't get to see this in the theater, but heard it was quite an experience for those who did...

JL_83

Yeah, I was shocked by that When I saw it in the theater, but it's extremely dramatic.

Stick Figure Studios

Fantastic film.

Stick Figure Studios

Ah, Yes. From the director of FIELD OF DREAMS and SNEAKERS, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS is a solid flick. Affleck may be my least favorite Jack Ryan (or ,maybe Chris Pine,; I go back and forth), but the movie itself is quite good (It's still not quite up to the first three Jack Ryan / Tom Clancy movies). It's smart and suspenseful and I knew you would enjoy it. Can't wait to see this reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

So glad to hear that you loved it! I liked it better than both Harrison Ford movies. Right up there with The Hunt for Red October.

Cole Jennett

Around the time this movie came out (2002), Tom Clancy released a new book featuring Jack Ryan, called 'Red Rabbit', about the KGB plot to kill Pope John Paul II. A year after 'Sum...', producers started developing 'Red...' as the next vehicle for Affleck, he was going to return as Ryan, but then in 2005, the real Pope died, so the script was scrapped. Producers were still trying to get 'The Cardinal of the Kremlin' off the ground, which dates back to Alec Baldwin days, after which, Affleck walked away.

JPDotCom23

Agree. In fact, I’ll probably skip all of the movie sequels she mentioned needing/wanting to react to. They’re simply not good; why waste time watching a reaction to a crappy movie?

Just Plain Bob

The two teams playing in this movie are the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

JPDotCom23

One of the great things about this movie is that you think it's about Ryan working to stop the bomb from going off. But it's really about preventing the disastrous aftermath of that attack.

Walter

I’m not sure anyone is hanging out for you to watch the Chris Pine entry but I’d be very in favour of a Hannibal tv show reaction.

Jacob King

I am so happy that Cassie enjoyed this movie. I can’t hardly wait to get home and watch her reaction.

Uncle Phoenix

oooh...do you really need to finish The Matrtix? Maybe drop that towards the bottom of the list.

Walter

I had the DVD for this. The best part about that is that it had commentary by the Director and Tom Clancy.

Stephen Last

It was John Clark. The other novel you mentioned, I think is Rainbow 6 where John and Domingo Chavez set up a global anti terrorist team based out of London.

Stephen Last

This was better than I remember but I still wish they’d stuck closer to the book, in which Nazis played no part. The villains in the book were motivated by different aims, although to the same ends. I found them to be more thought provoking and more human. The movie did have a couple of nods to the Tom Clancy/Ryan-verse books that I liked. Jack Ryan telling his future wife that he’s a historian is technically true. In the books, he has a PhD and teaches military history at Annapolis (the Naval Academy), between bouts at the CIA as an analyst. Also, when Cabot (Admiral Greer in the books; no idea why the name change) tells him that his tickets to the White House Correspondents Dinner are under the name “John Clark”, that’s a reference to another Tom Clancy character that was featured in his novel “Without Remorse.” Clark was featured again in another Jack Ryan novel, although I don’t remember which one and he was not the main character.

Just Plain Bob

Yep saw this in theater when I was High School I think with my Dad, pretty sure about that. I think we both loved it. He finally gets back on Tuesday after being in the Dominican Republic since Labor Day of last year. We can't wait to watch this one with Cassie probably this afternoon.

Zachary K. (Caitlin Clark fan)

Another great political thriller is Three Days of the Condor (1975) with Robert Redford

Shawn Kildal

Haven't seen this in a while. Did it win a poll?

Chris Thom

Jack Ryan is one of my favorite characters and I adore this movie! You should totally watch the tv series on Prime!

Justin Samlal

Love this movie, don’t quite like it as much as The Hunt for Red October or Clear and Present Danger, but it’s still a great time and highly underrated. Glad you enjoyed it!

Thomas Wetherell

Yes this is a good entry in the Jack Ryan series with an excellent cast even in the supporting roles, including James Cromwell and the late Philip Baker Hall.
