[YT Edit] Patton (1970)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "Patton", which will premiere shortly!

[YT Edit] Patton (1970)

Comments

Cassie, You and Ben are the best creators on the internet, bar none. Kenneth

Interesting bit of trivia on this film. Francis Ford Coppola won an Oscar for the screenplay and he used his Oscar as a prop in "The Godfather". It's sitting on the nightstand in the bedroom of Woltz in the famous "horse head" scene.

Tom Castro

I have liked Patton (1970) since I was a kid. Patton (1970) is a generally accurate film (better than most) but is not a documentary -- does take creative liberties. For instance, the meeting between Patton and Montgomery in Messina, Sicily, in the movie actually never happened. Another example is the movie depicts Patton and Bradley as friends when in reality Bradley disliked Patton, both personally and professionally.

Clay F

She seems to love Ryan Reynolds.

Another great reaction as always Cassie. George C. Scott was unquestionably one of the greatest actors of his generation. He is to my knowledge the first actor to refuse to accept his own Oscar win, don't know whether or not you'd consider that humility but you've got to admire it. If you're interested in seeing more of Scott's work then I'd definitely recommend checking out his version of Scrooge in the 1984 adaption of "A Christmas Carol", probably my second favourite after Michael Caine in "Muppet Christmas Carol". Also for Halloween you should check out "The Changeling" (1980), one of the greatest haunted house films ever made, thanks in large part to the gravitas of Scott's performance. P.S. I know that you're likely never going to consider watching "Exorcist III", but I just couldn't not mention it while talking about George C. Scott's work. In my opinion it's among his best work.

Jake McNulty

Can’t lie. Haven’t seen the full movie. Gave me a reason to go back and check it out. Much love and support!

Cassie, You asked about what happened to Patton after the war. The movie hints at this near the end with the almost being hit by a cart scene, but doesn't clarify his fate specifically for some reason. What really happened is that he, rather ironically, died as the result of injuries from a simple car collision in Germany just months after the end of the war. It's weird to think of all the things he survived just to end up dying from a simple car accident. He is buried in an American military cemetery in Luxembourg with other members of the Third Army that he commanded.

Daniel Allen

I love Cassie. I love Canada. I even love Vancouver. But #FRyanReynolds. So Sorry, but he is so horrible.

Greyhound is full of all sorts of historical errors, same with Midway 76, such as Genda's lies and the absurd romance story that invents a bunch of people. And yes U571 is made up, there is no real debate about that.

Benjamin Gerrald

About 3 things in this movie are historical accurate. This is history written by hollywood.

gilgath

Patton is a great movie. I think with the number of military/ war movies (and series) that Cassie has seen she should receive an honorary degree from West Point. I think it is time for her to put her “sea legs” on and watch a movie regarding the WWII naval battles. 1. Sink the Bismarck 2. Midway- 1976 (I don’t think the 2019 version is very good) 3. Greyhound 4. I would add U571to the list, but I think there is too much debate about the accuracy of the movie.

Ted Whalen

General MacArthur may have had the biggest ego in WWII.

Ted Whalen

Good little movie, and an unusual peek into the dynamic of an Allied war machine. How could Patton and Montgomery (Two whatever-state-of-ego-is-above-Alpha males) ever get along with each other? Their alliance would always be about glory and one-upmanship and only tempered by the one or two guys above them who have more power. Fascinating film, with a great performance by George C Scott, and as usual, Cassie seasoned it perfectly. While Scott is fresh in her mind, maybe she could slip on over to The Hustler (1961) and enjoy herself some young Paul Newman too.

Clarence Newman

If you thought Patton was an ego maniac, wait till you hear about the guy in charge of the Pacific front.

Kawaii Leonard

Patton was killed in a car accident a few months after the war ended. He lingered for a time in the hospital with a broken neck. There are conspiracy theories about the episode of course, some like Bill O'Reilly saying that he was poisoned in the hospital by the Soviets. O'Reilly wrote "Killing Patton" on this which became a best seller. By the way, George C. Scott was a distant cousin of mine through my maternal grandmother, Susie Scott.

Bill Isaacs

When I was a security guard at a Casino I saw a guy come in with a WWII hat on . I asked him where you stationed at? He said Europe. In fact he was in Patton'a 3rd Army. My eyes must have lit up like Christmas tree. I had like a million questions. He said that it's hard to find young people like yourself interested in this. I remember asking him what Patton was like he said tough as nails but if you followed orders and kept your nose clean he liked you. He was with Patton when they "helped" Easy company at the Battle Of The Bulge at Bastogne. In the end I had to get back to work but I shook his hand and thanked him for his service for everything. I called him a hero. He seemed extremely humble said he was just doing his job. Still one of the most interesting people I have shook hands with. The Desert Fox or Rommel could beat anyone in battle but Patton. Patton outsmarted him every time. Patton was a hero no doubt about that.

Zachary K.

If you didn't already realize, Patton was the commander of the third Army and as such, the overall commander of Easy Company!

Check that…”The Pentagon Wars”

For more George C. Scott on this channel, I’d say first and foremost would be “Dr. Strangelove.” He plays a similarly eccentric military Warhawk in what is a classic film. His Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol” is also my favorite of those films and I’d also recommend “Firestarter,” one of the earliest Stephen King film adaptations. You hinted at it and, yes, Gen. Patton was involved in The Battle of the Bulge which was featured in “Band of Brothers” and they refer to him in that series (namely not needing to be “rescued”). He also stars in “Firestarter” which is one of the earliest Stephen King adaptations. I’d also recommend checking out an HBO original film called “The Pentagon Games.” Not a GCS film but it stars Cary Elwes and Kelsey Grammer in a story about military red tape and corruption surrounding the development of the “Bradley fighting vehicle” named after Gen. Omar Bradley who featured in this film.

Mark Daniels

My dad was in world war ii, had two purple hearts... And he had nothing nice to say about Patton.

Jeff Rogers

Let’s not forget that after the war, Patton was run off the road and sustained injuries that paralyzed him from the neck down. A month later he died of congestive heart failure. A sad ending to his career.

Starpartyguy

Best Historical Bio General PIC "Gods and Generals" or "Gettysburg" but it is about the civil war so we would offend too many Snowflakes

Cassie, you said at the beginning that you didn't "recognize this main actor," but George C. Scott was indeed in a movie you reacted to a while ago -- "Anatomy of a Murder." He and Jimmy Stewart were the opposing attorneys in the murder trial. Btw, if come this yuletide season, you're inclined to check out another rendition of Dickens's holiday classic, I think the 1984 version of "A Christmas Carol" -- with Scott as Scrooge -- is the very best film version of them all. (I definitely found it more satisfying than the Patrick Stewart version, with a more appealing cast from top to bottom..)

BriGuy

Cassie has seen some really good movies (and series) that have covered a lot of the history of WWIi. I think the one area that has been lacking is the Navy’s contribution to the war (I believe that she did watch Das Boot). Greyhound (with Tom Hanks) maybe a good recommendation for her next war movie.

Ted Whalen

In every war there is a need for someone who succeeds simply because they don’t understand the concept of failure. This is George Patton!

Starpartyguy

Love the Soldier. Not sure about calling it “.. feel good movie “ though. But I still like it

Bill Maurer

Wanna good Military feel good movie.....Solider with Kurt Russel

gilgath

Patton is my favorite movie. The one movie I would want on a deserted island. I’m glad Cassie appreciated the acting and production. In the future, I’m sure she will enjoy A Bridge Too Far with its stellar cast and story. Paths of Glory would be another great choice for her.

Stephen Malloy

I'm sure someone in the full reaction comments told you but...he was in a car accident in Dec. of '45 and died in the hospital shortly after.

Samuel Champ

Hi Cassie, 2 weeks ago on your full reaction to this movie I made comment where, I offered to email you a list of videos to react to by the YouTube channel Oversimplifed. You liked it which I took as a "Yes" and emailed it to you, but I'm worried that you didn't notice it or missed it. I'd love to know if you have seen it though.

A good movie, but it still misses some of the important parts of Patton's life. Like most high ranking people they have an ego. It is often what drives them to be great. I used to love reading about General Omar Bradley who was much quieter and still a great general. Also like many flawed men, during peacetime he was often overlooked, but when it was life and death (maybe for the world) he got things done and didn't care who he ticked off. Still hoping for more comedies and anything that makes you feel happy. Enjoy your time in Canada.

William Brownlee

Thanks! Very few if any reactions to this movie. Thanks to those who voted for it and for reacting to it.
