[YT Edit] The Pianist (2002)

Comments

I love the piano in this movie.

Clay F

Great movie, but hard to watch. Talk about the will to survive! I'm a musician and classical music fan, but had not heard of this person; I need to see if any recording of him exist.

Stephen Dias

Dear Cassie. Thanks for the reaction💖 You mention you haven't watched much placed in Poland during the Second World War, so I would just want to recommend "The Zookeeper's Wife" which is a true story adapted for screen (and Jessica Chastain playing the lead) about the Polish pair that owned Warsaw Zoo and helped incredible numbers of Jews escape from the Ghetto. It is one of my favorite WWII movies - heart-wrenching, heart-opening and unbelievable. Hope it could make it into a future poll🙏 Love from Signe, Denmark💗🙌🌺

"The Pianist" joins our growing list of very short YT reactions. 2 hour & 29 minute run-time and Cassie's actual reaction is only around 34 minutes. This is not happening with every movie, but I've counted around 14 films this year with very truncated YT reaction times. This is not just happening on films with shorter run-times.

bad people can make great movies (Woody Allen, etc.)

Paul Stelter

if the category is military court movies I go with Paths of Glory (1957) although of course it's more than just that. (but Breaker Morant is good)

Paul Stelter

You should check out Breaker Morant, a true story movie from 1980. A military court movie, about three Australian officers on trial for shooting prisoners. Outstanding acting performances, and a great story about the follies and tragedy of empire building.

Michael Bachman

The director is a Polish Holocaust survivor whose pregnant mother was gassed to death. So much of this film is based not only on Szpilman's autobiography, but on Polanski's experiences surviving in Warsaw. He was originally asked to do Schindler's List but refused because he couldn't do a film that was as ... uh, optimistic as that one. Later, his pregnant wife was murdered by the Mansons which probably also informs the tone of this film. Other people have mentioned the awful things he did later so I won't dwell on that. It's a great movie informed by personal tragedy made by someone who became a terrible person. The scene where he plays Chopin for the German officer is a masterpiece. The end part is one of the few depictions of the Warsaw Uprising. The Poles rebelled against the Germans, hoping to pave the way for the Soviets. The Soviets then sat across the river while the Germans systematically destroyed every building in the city.

Let me vague but I hope EVERYONE remembers rule 3 *should* apply to EVERYONE. 3. No religious or political discussion. This is not a place to discuss politics or religion. I already see some "skirt[ing] the edges".

Mike Lemon

It’s def one of those see it once why would I ever watch it again. I started watching it again as I was curious about Cassie’s reaction. Then I stopped and remembered, there is only one reaction a human being can have to this film.

Brett John Chase

Agree

I usually determine how "great" a performance is by asking, "Could I imagine anyone else playing this part as well or better than the actor that played it?" Brody's performance in this movie, along with Christoph Walz in "Inglorious Basterds" are for my money the two "nobody ever could have done it as well" performances, and I was thrilled when Brody won the Oscar.

Cliff Endicott

An important movie for humanity. Arguably a duty as a citizen of the world is to watch this movie, which is still relevant today in that autocratic fascists filled with nationalist racist hate still exist.

Clay F

Every person as a citizen of the world should watch this movie. Relevant today in that autocratic fascists filled with nationalist racist hate still exist. We can never let our guard down.

Clay F

Still weird we're just chill with supporting a Roman Polanski film. I suppose these days sexual assault is fine if you're rich enough.

aarswft

This is going to be another movie I watch for the first in condensed form with Cassie.

Louis Chapman

Completely heartbreaking

Miss Lee

Robert Jewell I agree the movies is brilliant and well done. However, the director is beneath contempt, a predator of children.

Doc Larry

As I stated before a brilliantly performed Movie with excellent actors, a very emotional true story about a very dark time in human history. Viewers still have to be aware that the director of this movie Roman Polanski is as much of a monster and evil as the characters portraying the Nazis In 1977, Polanski was arrested for drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of unlawful sex with a minor in exchange for a probation-only sentence. The night before his sentencing hearing in 1978, he learned that the judge would likely reject the proffered plea bargain, so he fled the U.S. to Europe, where he continued his career. He remains a fugitive from the U.S. justice system. It is believed that she is not the only child that he assaulted

Doc Larry

Many of the Poles were just as bad as the Nazis toward the Jews. You'll recall the end screens of Schindler's list saying that there are fewer Jews in Poland today than there are descendants of the Schindler Jews. Poland was partitioned between the Soviets and the Nazis in a secret agreement between the two before the invasion known as the Molotov-Von Ribbentrop Pact. The Soviets attacked into Poland two weeks (if memory serves) after the German invasion. They met in the middle. Later in the war, as the Soviets were about to re-enter Warsaw, the Poles revolted but Stalin gave orders to his army to stay put and allow the Germans to put down the Polish uprising so that he himself wouldn't have to deal with them later. It is regarded as one of the more cynical betrayals in the annals of the Second World War.

I would suggest a old black and White movie . Diary of Ann Frank from 1959 , was based on the time they spent living in the attic above a friend house and based on her diary found in the attic . Such a tragedy her and her sister so young with there whole lives ahead of them . Sometimes I know I delay watching movies with a Strong Storyline. Did Google how she and her sister Died not a direct result of the Nazis .

Tim C

Great and important movie. "It's an official decree, no Jews allowed in the parks."

Clay F

I've somehow managed to miss this movie for all these years. This is as good a reason as any to finally sit down and watch it

Devon Caitlin

Such an indescribably brilliant film based on a very accurate true story and the director's own experiences.

Robert Jewell

I'm looking forward to it.
