Robbery, I tell you. Stallone won the Golden Globe just before the Oscars, which trumps Rylance's BAFTA, and nuanced the heck out of his portrayal of an old, broken-down Rocky. His speech to his son alone should've made it a slam dunk win, but I guess they never forgave him for naming one of his worst movies after the statue.

The schools that start early are generally the ones that have a lot of days off during the school year, whether they're scheduled or anticipated snow days, etc...and they have to squeeze in the required days/hours. I went to a Catholic school growing up. They didn't close for anything. We started in Sept and still got out a week or 2 ahead of the public schools.

Mark Rylance's performance was widely considered deserving of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar he won. While Stallone was a strong contender for his role in Creed, Rylance's nuanced and captivating portrayal of Abel resonated with many voters and critics, leading to his win. Rylance's performance was lauded for its subtlety, depth, and emotional complexity, particularly his ability to convey inner strength and warmth w/minimal dialogue. While Stallone was a popular choice, Rylance's win was seen as a strong statement by the Academy, recognizing his exceptional talent and the film's overall quality. Rylance's victory wasn't a complete surprise, as he had already won BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and the New York Film Critics Circle Award. Rylance, while an acclaimed theater actor, was relatively less known in film. His win helped bring wider recognition to his exceptional screen presence and acting range.

I can offer some direct insights on AMISTAD if we ever get there. 😁

Above Average Dave

I saw Amistad mentioned. Pls pls watch the John Adams miniseries (2008) prior to Amistad, it makes Amistad so much better with all the context from it.

I don't know a ton about international relations, but my general impression is that the Russian government didn't and doesn't seem to give much of a s-- about being truthful or trusted

Chris Thom

He was really good in this though. Not all that surprised that he won. Do hope Stallone will win one for acting before retirement.

A knight for a knight and a pawn. The russians were never going to admit their man was a spy.

Scandalous. An absolute travesty. A miscarriage of justice of biblical proportions. Political machinations, favouritism and ingrained prejudice against folks who speak like a 45rpm record played on 33 1/3. Yes, I'm talking about that shifty cat burglar Mark Rylance, doing the full Ocean's 11 on Sylvester Stallone's well-deserved Oscar in 2015. How the very could he?? Sorry guys. There are some things that cannot be forgiven.

I think you are talking about East German soldiers shooting German civilians trying to flee and escape over the wall from East Berlin into West Berlin. East Germany was not officially part of the Soviet Union. While East Germany was a communist state and a satellite state of the Soviet Union, it remained a separate, independent nation, officially known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The Soviet Union did, however, exert significant influence and control over East Germany during the Cold War.

Clay F

I think the shooting scene from the tower was the Soviets shooting at fellow Soviets who were trying to flee and escape.

Soviet radar and chase planes would have given them a pretty good idea of the U2's operating altitude. The U2's engine was known to occasionally 'flame out' at high altitude and SOP was to glide it back down to thicker air so that the engine could be restarted. The NSA had tracked a plane showing such a flight path, although later reports indicated that they might have tracked one of the Soviet chase planes instead. Being that this is the spy business, there was also a report that Soviet spies had infiltrated the Pakistani base that the U2 flew from and planted a bomb on it which they detonated during the flight since they were previously unable to shoot it down. This is the kind of incident that attracts people to come out of the woodwork with the 'real' story - the general public will never really be sure what caused it.

So, there’s a rather strange POSSIBLE connection between Francis Gary Powers’ shootdown and, if you can believe it, Lee Harvey Oswald, the guy who shot Kennedy. So, Oswald served in the Marines and part of his tour was operating Air Defense radars. After he mustered out he moved, for some reason, to the Soviet Union. The Soviets admitted to interviewing him, wondering if he might be a spy. According to them, they determined that Oswald was, essentially, a β€˜nobody.’ A couple of years later Oswald and his Russian wife moved to the US. Now, the U-2 was rather slow and was completely unarmed and had no defenses of any kind except the fact that it flew exceedingly high. The Soviets had shot Surface to Air Missiles at just about every U-2 they spotted but never hit one until Powers. Powers’ U-2 was successfully targeted and hit mere months after Oswald emigrated to the USSR. Did Oswald’s background in air defense give the Soviets enough information about the U-2’s capabilities, such as its usual operating altitude? It’s unknown. Other than the coincidence of Oswald’s emigration being shortly followed by Ppwers’ shootdown, we have no evidence.

"We have to have the conversations our governments can't." "What's the next move when you don't know what the game is?" "Every person matters."

"Aren't you worried?" "Would it help?"

Having a hard time following the schedule. Was thinking To Catch a Thief was upcoming. I've seen Bridge of Spies, but ordered a copy from my library so I could see it again to remind me of its plot points. So I'm behind and will have to watch later.

I miss the early YouTube links :( I like to watch YouTube on my TV.
