Thank you for reacting to this. I know it's an odd film, and it can be difficult to decipher the thoughts and feelings toward it. 52k isn't a TON of views after four days, but the discussions under it have been fascinating and engaging. Almost a thousand comments already. Vast majority who commented are grateful to have it appear on the channel and have you give it a shot.

Just gave the YouTube edit a watch and it still feels like a bit of a mess of a movie, also found it a bit weird in places. So I still think it’s one of the worst movies he’s directed.

Most critics are depressed nihilists. They wanted him to sit under the ocean looking at the statue forever because they have depressing lives and dont like seeing positive symbolism

This movie is a blend of 2 different visions of 2 different directors. Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick (director of your favorite horror movie, The Shining) Kubrick hired many actors and drew storyboards and concept art (specifically he oversaw Robin Williams' Dr. Know recording) but once he knew he was dying, which very few people knew he was, he gave the project to Spielberg, along with the script treatments and concept art. Spielberg was blamed for the ending which critics hated (its never specified the "aliens" are super advanced robots that were most likely created by other robots, and felt the last day with the mom was too sappy) however it was later proven that was the ending Kubrick wanted and originally approved of

The early question "Can we get a human to love them back?" is so funny because humans love *anything*. We are the species that names our pets, cars, homes. I've encountered people who were genuinely sad when a pair of shoes wore out because they loved their shoes. And today one worry is that some individuals may be falling in love with AI chat software. People would 100% love an AI robot that seemed just a little bit human. It's not a a very high bar to set.

James Melton

Passable but too long, I don't know why Hollywood thinks every movie should be 3 hrs long, most simply do not have that much competent story.

Was Brian Aldiss the one that wrote Blade Runner?

Chris Thom

It's quite ambitious. Love that it was released in 2001. Very fitting. This was essentially my intro to sci fi at fifteen and it's been hard to beat.

Are Cassie, Ben and fam moving?

We loved your reaction to this movie by the way. However I have to comment on your Instagram post. So I had to send this to my friends. We worked construction right out of HS built a $460,000 house At least I was thoroughly impressed with the construction on this. We did this at our garage we just added a remote so you can push a button a door opens a secret room that's full of power tools. Whoever did your construction work is good. I am talking about the door and getting the room exactly right to hold all those DVD/ Blue Ray. I am getting text back now. Friends are impressed. Must have been a huge project.

Everyone thinks they are Aliens at the end. They are the evolved Mecha/Oraga. So a human robot hybrid. Not aliens. This movie is so darn good. John Williams just knocking it out the park. The cinematography is glorious. I’ve always wondered how different the Kubrick version would be. Definitely more ambiguous. I imagine the end we would have zero explanation for how the future beings brought back Monica and it would be more like 2001. Jude Law should’ve been nominated for an Oscar for this movie.

I haven't seen this as an adult. I forgot how deep this film was.

Louis Chapman

Fascinating movie. So strange but weirdly beautiful.

Chris Thom

Loved you reaction Cassie and have always loved he movie. Oddly fascinating, and touching as how many of us would not want to spend one more day with their mother after she has passed on, I know I would.

Steven Spielberg took on this project from Stanley Kubrick, who had bought the rights to a short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long” by Brian Aldiss in the 1970s. About six months before the movie was released, Warner Bros and Microsoft launched an online murder mystery (one of the first alternate reality games) set in the A.I. universe that expanded on somethings briefly touched on in the movie. Martin became an architect of sentient homes. The Flesh Faire became the breeding ground of a robot rebellion, which led to the destruction of the weather satellites and the planetary ice age. The ongoing question is are the beings that woke David up at the end actually aliens or advanced versions of the robots humanity created and sent to other planets. Also, the mystery had a truly messed up, crazy version of Teddy.

Looking forward to this one!
