If you’re in FStwt you’ve definitely seen this video (and probably many others from On Ice Perspectives). The whole channel is excellent to see skating from a closer POV than you ever do in competition broadcasts, which is SUPER useful for me.

This one in particular, with the slow mo, is really good to understand where the skater places their weight when doing different things. I’ve always found that figuring out the weight of the character & where it’s balanced helps improve both drawing and animation. The slow mo also allows for me to understand the movement in more detail - usually with skating videos I’ll be going back and forth frame by frame trying to understand what the blurry tiny skater on screen is doing.

I think I understand the way skating works pretty well visually, but it’s been funny to learn how little I understand it physically whenever I’ve tried to learn a new skill in skating. The pros make it all look so easy, and NONE of it is!!

This video puts a lot of focus on Yuzuru Hanyu, to absolutely no one’s surprise because he’s insanely good and wonderful to watch. But it also highlights Junhwan Cha (in the black & red sparkly outfit), who’s another of my favorite skaters & who I’ve used as reference for Hana here and there. The one in the green shirt, Camden Pulkinen, who is also great, is who I used as reference for Cameron!

I’m a little bit afraid of talking about my references too much since I’ve heard through the grapevine that some american skaters are vaguely aware of the existence of Blades of Furry. I mean. Amber Glenn and I became mutuals and chatted a bit at one point. I couldn’t even finish my dinner that day I got so nervous!!

I just worry they won’t like being referenced. Anywhoo. Hope those of you who hadn’t seen this video before enjoy!!
