66 Books - Adam and Eve

This episode explores the very beginning of the Adam and Eve story, focusing on the moment the name “Adam” first appears in Genesis.

We look at how the narrative shifts from the broad creation account in Genesis 1 to the more detailed, intimate depiction of humanity in Genesis 2, where Adam is introduced, placed in Eden, and given responsibility for naming the animals. The discussion touches on the creation of Eve, the structure of the early Genesis text, and how these passages have been interpreted across history.

Hi chaps. Thanks for continuing the series. I am no expert, but as believer and one who has read the bible several times through, what I find to be most interesting is listening in on two people (who by their own admission are not believers and don’t have extensive biblical knowledge) discuss/debate and arrive at conclusions. This is helping me see how non believers reason on scriptural passages. Ones I have had some understanding of for many years. Such as when Ian reasons out - correctly in my humble opinion - that God prepared the garden home for the first human couple to start a family (much the way a couple marry, decorate the home/nursey before the baby is born). Something I would like to share is a generally accepted (there is over 40,000 sects of Christianity with various interpretations after all!) a basic primer of Christian belief as this can be lost a bit in your discussion of these first few chapters of Genesis: - Humans were not designed by God to die - It was by Eating the fruit that led to sin - The command from god to abstain from eating from that one tree was to give the first humans the chance to accept his position as the creator - this was the test from god. - the serpent is not a part of god - rather Satan is behind it (Rev 12:9) - satan challenges gods position as the sovereign of the universe - Our first parents disobey god and thus become sinners - aka imperfect humans. - At that time they had not had any children - when they did end up having children, this imperfection or sin was passed on to them. Thus we all are sinners. (Romans 5:12) - Hence why the world is now imperfect and why we now die. Hope that helps clarify the Christian doctrine in not too controversial fashion… Can I raise one frustration that I have with the discussion? It’s this idea that it’s Science Vs the bible. That if you are scientific you cannot believe in God, or somehow would need to do some mental gymnastics to square the two. This could not be further from the truth. To myself and many many other scientific people (I studied Maths and Physics at Uni) the more I have learned about science the more I’m convinced of the existence of god and the accuracy of scripture. The “theory” of evolution - I note that it’s still a theory not 💯 proven fact - requires just as much faith as faith in god/scripture. I would actually say more faith, as the evidence used to piece said theory together is quite scant in all honesty - but that’s for other books. It’s a fascinating subject. I suggest the books “signature in the cell” and “Darwin’s doubt” for example by Stephen Meyer Also one last brief point: Are Christmas and Easter even Christian?? If you study the origins they come from Pagan fertility rights and the worship of the sun (begging for its return) in December… they have been painted to look Christian and appease the masses, but are they required by God? Anyways, Thanks for bringing this topic to heart and hand lads.

Luke 2 Chapter 52: "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man". I had to learn that off by heart at the age of 8 and still remember it to this day. It earned me one of my badges in Yoker 198 Boys Brigade. I also went to the nearby Sunday School in the Yoker Evangelical Church (when it was wooden) and was Christened in the Drumchapel Salvation Army (no longer there). Loving the shows and with myself being Atheist / Agnostic...(can't make my mind up yet 😊) I have still always been fascinated by Christianity and the thousands of denominations and always wanted to find out what these differences are in laymen's terms / idiot's guide!!

Who is anyone to ask why God does anything? As he says to Job: “where were you when I created the world?” I suspect you’re going to continue to judge God by your standards throughout this series. Also what’s your obsession with gender inequality too? Scripture is clear that men and woman have the same rights, but men are to have headship. The Prime Minister leads the nation, but that doesn’t mean he has more rights or value than anyone else. Despite what you say, Adam is held primarily responsible for the Fall, not Eve, because he was in charge.

Good discussion lads but don’t you think early Christianity was very clever in jus taking over previous cultures celebrations and rebranding them. Christmas the birth of Christ for instance was a Roman feast day Dies Natalia Solis Invicta coming at the end of Saturnalia. When you drive through Western Europe you will come across alters mostly to the Virgin Mary at crossroads or springs which have been put onto “ pagan “ sites. It’s just a creation story,as you say before science they had to explain their existence and put a hierarchical bent on it.
