Exclusive #189 | Why Survivor is TOXIC for Black Fans

Comments

Thanks Coach 🙏

Dave Smith

I am a white guy that has been watching Dave Smith since BB23. I love what you're doing, Dave. I still love the season, but this moment was very rough. Go Drea and Maryanne.

Oliver Mensinger

To be fair, there were 2 Black Men who made jury (Mike & Rocksroy), but I agree with your premise. Production only cares about Black Women shining if Blacks shine at all. Rocksroy got portrayed as a villain for wanting Men to work together but any time a woman wants women working together...its supported universally. Romeo was the target but he somehow became less of one after lying to Hai's face? Lol wtf. None of it makes sense & its obvious people assumed there was a black alliance.

Dave Smith

Once again the Straight black man gets ganged up on.....WHAT is this? Seems like the same game again. We went from 4 straight black men in 41 to only one straight black man and add four more black women? This just shows Production hated how far Deshawn and Danny went in the game (Both placing 2nd and 6th) Now we one black man who is not biggest fan of the show they set us up again SMH.

Jalen Murphy

I did it for the culture 💯

Many many thanks for covering this. I was originally a Survivor fan vs. Big Brother/The Challenge but you know I am a fan of yours Coach, and I appreciate your continued analyses. There aren't many "safe spaces" to have dialogue on this (re: projecting majority white super-fans / and the select black fans who comment away on YT dogging black players who align or consider race as a factor in a WEALTH-TRANSFER based game ABOUT POWER DYNAMICS). I feel like Viacom/CBS are marketing this diverse rebrand as this kind of "theme park adventure", where participants can "bring their true and authentic selves" (to quote the dominant Tribal Council catchphrase Chanelle fell victim to) and "be welcomed" for your differences - and many of us Black players/fans, especially the younger ones, are genuinely opening themselves and buying into this Jeff-pushed mantra. The New Era, everyone is saying. But as you have assessed, history, economics, social dynamics, politics, capitalism and more - it all is relevant and comes to a head in this game, and its always been that way. Which makes these reality shows even more cutthroat than viewers are willing to honestly own up to - everyone is forgetting this is for a million dollars, and what forms of deception/manipulation are deemed appropriate (by a majority white fanbase, white editors, production team, execs) to attain this money, and eliminate other people. As you say often, navigating this game can be applied to navigating your job, your school, the politics of your neighborhood/community, organizational dynamics - everything in life applies to these games and vice versa. I keep repeating that because the foundational forms of racism in this game are appreciated as normal when the tactics work for white players, who represent the fanbases and communities they represent - backed by an all white editing team (which is still the case), who controls what we get to see of what happens, what soundbites we hear. Your the only person who tackles this head on and calls it for what it is, and encourages Black folk to actually use this understanding to make moves for our own benefit for once, as individuals and collectively, and that is a huge deal. To not be afraid to do so. There's a lot I could say on the individual players this season and this recent episode, but I'm thankful this dialogue is always more about exposing patterns and tactics, and evaluating whether individuals actually are acting in their best interests or buying into an illusion of inclusion to their own detriment. It would be great to contribute to an ongoing Black-centered discussion on observations from Survivor as lessons or points to apply in life, but that doesnt exist really. And last point - which you will be the ONLY ONE TO SAY - ...we always be worried about white folk in the game and their tactics in This New Era (which we should be), and then get swiped from the side by the Ricards, the Erikas, the Omers, the Hais etc - who we be expendable to as well, after chillin together being People of Color, thank you for addressing that

I never watched 40 because the first episode Natalie was taken out & I said f*** this shit lol For Tony to win, it was rigging involved. That guy should never make jury lol but them cops always get production preferential treatment I'll make this rant public in a few days to make sure the message gets out there, but I want Patrons to enjoy it first. Thanks for Watching 🙏

Dave Smith

The last season I saw was 40 winners season where they treated Jeremy like crap and robbed the win from Natalie after she endured it all on that island. Someone (i think Natalie) even mentioned Jeremy's mistreatment and they shut it down immediately. I'm done with new survivor but might go back to watch Jeremy and Natalie's winning seasons. Glad you did this rant cause you said a lot of what we all needed to hear.

Mike is weird to me. Hard for me to root for him cuz he tends to kiss non black people's ass too much.

Dave Smith

man seeing them tear up really got me. upset. I'm so happy that they were able to express themselves without getting turnt up 😫 as much as I wish they could've just SNAPPED on their asses they did the right thing . I'm still salty at Mike for holding that grudge too 😂 petty petty

Aleisia

LMFAO yes I recommend everyone watches the full episode first

Dave Smith

And were still labeled "aggressive" by Jonathan just cuz he was salty they exposed him smh

Dave Smith

Whew...just finished the episode. Them girls stood ten toes down!! So proud of them staying on code. They explained everything so eloquently

Kim Kennerly

I unloaded the cannon! I'll make it public in a few days but right now it's A Timed Patreon Exclusive. Thanks for Watching

Dave Smith

Great point. But remember, Jeff never let it go to voting cuz he wanted them to burn their idols & Jonathan suggested it.

Dave Smith

Epic RANT!

Lady A

my only problem is they didnt even have to play their idols. each of them could have played their extra vote and got out anyone they wanted

GQPRINCE

once I saw Rock get the boot I went to sleep lol. I need to finish the episode before enjoying this rant 😂😂😂 I was like oh hell nawl gn

Aleisia

I remember that too! Clarence never had a chance after that. They never forgave him. Big Tom got his karma during AllStars when Boston Rob played both him & Lex like a fiddle lol

Dave Smith

I remember in season 3 that fat ass Big Tom threatened to kill Clarence for eating some of their beans and their media "sweetheart " Ethan Zohn amening that.
