💬 Reflections on Auberon, Ciri, and the Elven Rejection of Incest

I believe this has nothing to do with poor aphrodisiacs and/or old age. Auberon himself said that Ciri resembles Lara and Shiadhal. How would you feel if you were expected to sleep with a girl who reminds you of your own daughter — and who, formally, is also your granddaughter?

According to Avallac’h, the elves simply don’t take Ciri’s human ancestors into account. That’s why Auberon considers her his granddaughter — and that’s exactly why the very act fills him with revulsion. It’s not because she’s human. It’s not the scar. It’s not her age. Something deep within him rebels against it. And I’m absolutely convinced it’s not physiology that’s holding him back — it’s psychology.

Auberon never recovered from the tragic death of his daughter. He’s still mourning her — and emotionally unprepared for anyone who even remotely reminds him of Lara. But elven pride won’t let him admit that. It’s much easier to blame it all on age and potions.

It’s also worth underlining that nowhere in the Saga is there even a hint that incestuous relationships are normal among elves. Quite the opposite: as an ancient, magically attuned race, elves should be more aware than anyone of the consequences of incest. Genetic defects are likely dangerous to them not only from a medical perspective but also a magical one, as even the slightest corruption of blood could lead to catastrophic outcomes.

And moreover, when we’re talking about a race like the Aen Elle, with access to advanced knowledge of genetics, the very assumption becomes utterly absurd.

So no — elven culture does not normalize incest. And Auberon, arrogant as he may be, knows very well why he can’t bring himself to cross that line.

I think it is a bit more complex than him just not liking humans that cause his inability to perform in bed. Yes, he despises them but he is also aware of his people’s fate if they don’t get the elder blood. I think out of the sense of duty and for genetic reasons he feels obligated to take on the demeaning burden of breeding with a human, but as Yagi already said, psychologically he cannot as it feels like he is about to sleep with his granddaughter. Concerning his upcoming outburst of insults towards Ciri - they are a reaction borne out of frustrations and not just because she is a human. He’s frustrated with having to deal with such a situation. He’s hurt by the fact that this young human girl reminds him so much of what he’s lost - both his partner and his daughter. Secondly, Ciri is evidence of his daughter’s rejection of him and their people, which must be a bitter pill to swallow. It’s like his elven sensibilities and pride are being insulted over and over again.

To me it always seemed clear that the decisive factor in Auberon's inability to perform is her being human, a slave race. Mating with a dh'oine was demeaning for the Alder King. Just one quote showing clearly how Auberon feels about Ciri: " You people really do not suffer from excessive modesty. Your hairy ancestors appeared with sword in hand latter than the chickens. And yet I have never heard a hen claim that it was ‘their world’. Why are you fidgeting like a monkey?". Not to mention the dialogue that will happen just any moment now in the comic...

I like auberon. I think he’s quite the tragic character. And I would also argue that he somehow chooses his own death.
