Color LED underwater light
Added 2025-09-25 18:04:33 +0000 UTCSometimes, to achieve unusual lighting, you have to resort to tricks. Ideally, you would have a proper underwater housing for LED panels — but what if you don’t?
The first thing that comes to mind (at least for me — yes, I actually did this before) is to put the light inside a condom, after washing off the lubricant. But if you don’t have one handy either, plastic wrap will come to the rescue!
Pros:
Most likely, you’ll find it in the kitchen.
It wraps tightly around the light, minimizing air gaps.
It reduces buoyancy.
Cons:
A couple of layers of wrap around the light won’t be enough.
Some water may seep through.
Ideally, you should do 5–7 tight layers.
As extra security, to prevent the wrap from unrolling, I added a couple of hair ties. Because of the internal air gaps, the buoyancy was still positive. To make the light sink to the bottom, I putted a metal ladle (also from the kitchen) under the ties.
Result: the underwater light source created very soft rim fill with pleasant reflections on the model’s body. And controlling the lamp from my phone made it easy to adjust the light color.
